Reviews (page 8 of 14)

Put me in a jazz bar, cocktail in hand, immediate 10/10. The musicianship is absolutely brilliant and I can totally see why this is an absolute classic jazz record. The flow is really enjoyable and there's nothing about it I don't hugely appreciate. But the only drawback is… would I listen to this in any other context than a jazz bar? Probably not. In no way is this a criticism of the album, maybe I'm just not cultured enough to have this on a constant rotation in daily life.

I'm not a big enough jazz fan to understand this album or its significance. It's good listening, though.

I wish someone who really knows jazz could tell me what makes this album so special. This is not to say I don’t like it, because I certainly do! It’s wonderful listening. Just curious why it’s considered among the best ever jazz albums.

I am exhausted and hungover today, this album was one of the best cures I could have asked for.

I already owned the album so I skipped it

Favourites: So What All Blues

Boy do I hate reviewing good albums that are generally considered good. I have nothing new to add to this. This is THE jazz album. Even if you've never heard jazz, you've heard of "Kind of Blue". Even if you're a beginner jazz listener, you know of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Bill Evans, and if you're a pinch more experienced, you know of Jimmy Cobb and Paul Chambers. It's like the 2017 Golden State Warriors of musicians. The album is one of THE albums to put on when it's night. It's one of THE albums to put on when it's day. It's one of THE albums to put on when you're happy, sad, content, when you're studying, when you're chilling. It's one of THE albums.

Contrary to the album's title, I think this record perfectly captures the color of blue.

This was a delight to listen to. Smooth and flows beautifully. I could listen to this time and again. I was thinking as I listened just how common that sound created by Miles Davis is in pop culture, TV shows (peanuts, Fraser...) and computer games (transport tycoon...) and countless musicians that borrow this easy going style. A cornerstone of music.

Great to listen to at the right moments.

So calm, pure, and chill. I could fall asleep to this every night. Every note is carefully hit from every instrument. Amazing. 8/10

Liked this much better than the Bitches Brew I was dealt a week ago.

i like jazz a lot

Excellent jazz. Makes me want to drink a dirty martini in a dimly lit old school lounge. Love this stuff. Miles Davis is the man

Miles Davis can really deliver emotions through the trumpet. This is not my favorite genre, but his playing and his bands accompaniment are really good.

17 yr old teenager 1st time listing to blues I love it!!

What can I say, chillest of the chillest piece of albums. No words needed. 4/5

Het was hartstikke fijn om weer een keertje naar blues/jazz te luisteren, dit ga ik zeker vaker doen! PS: ik heb zowat ieder nummer in mijn lijst gezet ;)

Jazz!!!

Some great jazz, think I listened to it like three times because I didn’t realise it had ended but I don’t mind!

Jazz has never really been my thing. This album is great, and I can see why some may love it, but it is not for me. Won’t be saving it.

I love this album. It is such a legendary staple of jazz music. This music makes me feel relaxed, comfortable but very curious at the same time. It feels like it can go anywhere at any time but always lands perfectly.

So good!

Favorite Track: Blue in Green

feels like I'm a Mad Man character contemplating the possible fallout after cheating on my wife (complimentary)

I don’t know enough about jazz to give this a proper review, but it was a nice enough vibe on a Sunday morning.

A gold standard jazz record, but that can only equate to a maximum of 4 for me. I think if it had a touch less Wynton Kelly and a touch more James Cobb I could reconsider.

Iconic album, what can I say. Makes me want a steak and a bottle of wine.

Exactly what you think it is. Great background or studio music!

Almost a 5, but have always thought that a couple of tracks don’t quite do it for me

Love it, somehow don't feel qualified to articulate further

Such a peak album for smooth jazz. Only getting a 4 instead of a 5 for a lack of variety.

Blue in green is beautiful. I’m not a jazz gal but can appreciate how gorgeous this is.

Álbum incrível. 4 estrelas pq não faz muito meu estilo.

A dream team's masterpiece. I always think his work is cold as ice, but not that hard to touch

Just an absolutely perfect record. For my personal tastes, think I prefer Sketches of Spain to this record. Some of the tracks sit on the same riffs and themes for a little longer than I'd like, but they're damn good riffs, so it isn't really that big a deal.

A recording that towers above it's contemporaries to the extent that it becomes the landscape against which everything that came afterwards is set.

Did not give it a fair listen as I had it in the background while working. Was very pleasant to have on and could be worth a revisit.

I have a hard time with this one. I can't pretend I'm versed enough in jazz to really know how to talk about it. It's lovely music, though, which is about all I can really say.

Ya like jazz?

Wait i kinda fuck with this

Interesting album, short but very listenable, really gave a vibe of like noire style detective music? I will listen to it again for sure

Can’t argue with what is considered the greatest jazz album of all time!

Very good but rather asamey for a whole album

arvici romeli sad mtavrdeboda da sad iwyeboda magram kai background album iyo

Heard this one before, lovely!

It’s Miles Davis. Not sure there’s much more to say - if you like jazz then you absolutely need to listen to this album. If not then give it a go anyway!

No. 74 Not a jazz fan, but I enjoyed listening to this while I worked.

This is actually quite cool for what it. Didn't think I would enjoy it but I did

Smooth but lacked that one "aha" moment for me

An album you can listen to all the time.

I don't particularly care for jazz but since I am not an asshole, this is great music. I also know enough to know that I cannot possibly add anything to the discourse about this album other than to say it is great music.

Smooth jazz, enjoyable to listen to in the background while working

Solid jazz, enjoyed the flamenco blues

the gentle sounds of blue. its famous for a reason. if you font like jazz, well, youre fucked here. anyway. truly a great album.

Needs to be listened to on a rainy night.

8.5/10

This album and a glass of wine would go so well together

I liked it love jazz Only listen to one song… 8/10

Absolutely loved it. I recently got into this type of music so I am enjoying it a lot lately. Solid, 7.8/10

Would love to hear this in Ronnie Scott’s. I need more music in my life that makes me just sit still and be present, instead of listening to lyrics that keep me tugged to my sadness. Need to get into this sort of music more and really listen to it as it is fantastic.

Oh yeah, that’s the good stuff.

Per Ross: Jazz 101, one of his favorite albums of all time, all the solos are improv

Rather enjoyable and chilling instrumental that tells a story 🎺 No specific notes except that it has definitely expanded my horizons music-wise :)

Not a jazz guy at all but I can appreciate this and always have

Pouring rain outside so this was perfect

Modal Jazz So What - 7/10 Freddie Freeloader - 9/10 Blue in Green - 9/10 All Blues - 8/10 Flamenco Sketches - 10/10

Coooooool.

allthough i have listened to this album tens of times before, it felt like i was discovering new parts in every track.

This was pretty, chill and a great way to start the day. The music had happiness, sadness and movement.

very relaxing, i remember listening to this awhile ago when i first started dabbling in jazz and i thought it was a great intro into the genre

Magnificent.

It sounds like good jazz, yes, but I don't really know how I would distinguish good and bad jazz. I'm aware that this is a personal failing more than a failing of the album, but it's hard for me to see giving it more than 4 stars. I wrote a bunch more but reviews don't save well in history mode.

Smooth

Känns nästan oseriöst att ge ett betyg. Som att gå runt och titta på museum och stanna vid en klassisk tavla och säga "hmm jag ger den en trea". Stor konst som kom väldigt rätt in i decemberstrosandet! Mycket stark fyra.

High quality Jaaaazz

Kind of fabulous

Sounds like a dark smoky room with mysterious characters moving about.

very nice tho i don’t listen to jazz but maybe it’s my sign to get into it ;)

Perfect for my morning commute

Enjoyable and chill! Was very nice to listen to while it snowed outside. "All Blues" and "Blue in Green" were favorites on here.

happy jazz day. had a moment during "all blues" where i GOT it. not an album i would listen to everyday but i will keep this in my repertoire as i can see how many different situations in which it would fit well.

I'm not into jazz by any means, but this album is extremely pleasant to listen to and I cannot imagine how anybody would dislike it. That being said, I listened to this while doing laundry and it made doing chores much nicer, and active listening would probably be difficult for me. It doesn't do anything for me emotionally and I'm not enough of a music theory nerd to analyze everything that's going on, even if I can recognize the brilliant musicianship in this.

Very chill jazz. As a fan of purely instrumental music I enjoyed it.

Good intro, kinda long, but I can deal with it Good cohesive musicians, not jumping all over each other like One Night Stand GREAT background music to get ready with No lyrics? Peanuts music Feels like pure background music in a kids' show Blue in Green is so depressing, I love it Looooong songs (11 minutes in the 50s???) Flamenco Sketches is dinner music fs Spotify shuffles songs after, and I couldn’t tell when John Coltrane started playing

I'm not a big fan of this kind of jazz. I like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald that type of jazz. However, I have always made an exception with this album. It's the only jazz album besides Louie and Ella that I have ever owned. It's the perfect music for getting stoned and relaxing. Definitely the best thing that Miles ever did.

73/100

Nice. Was surprised.

Listening to this while squinting at a computer screen trying to focus on my work made me feel like a dollar store version of Carrie Mathison from Homeland (complimentary)

Chill jazz

Wow, back-to-back Miles Davis, what a treat! This album was much shorter but still very solid. I'd recommend it. It gives strong charlie Brown jazz vibes.

Well, it's a classic, not much more to say!

I've not been rating jazz/blues very highly so far, but this one was very approachable. Still can't say much about any individual track, but as a until it compells.

This has to be the finest Miles Davis album on the list. This is my fourth Davis album and definitely my favorite. To no surprise, Davis is one of the finest jazz musicians ever, as proven by Kind of Blue. His music is so smooth, engaging, and lovely. Instrumental music has to be engaging without any lyrics, and of course Davis excels at that. And the song titles are amusing! What more could a gal ask for?

Soooo smooth, effortless, and cool. Each instrument is played to perfection and sets a remarkable mood. This is the kind of jazz I can get into. Absolutely timeless.

There was a time when I tried very hard to get into jazz. I got the "best" albums according to all of the lists. This was one of them, and I've listened to it quite a few times. I got the love for the record, finding it extremely melodic and the playing is top notch (played by some of the greatest musicians). I can't say that I love the album, but I definitely respect it. It made for an enjoyable listen, but I wasn't blown away by any song other than So What, which I've saved to a favorites playlist.

A classic. Great stuff

8/10 Favourite: So What Least Favourite: None

enjoyable

Laid back and cool. Transports the listener to old american movies. Never listened to this style of music but feel really calm for doing so.

The record that convinced me that I liked Jazz

Like watching ripples move across a still lake at dawn, this modal jazz album flows with serene precision, letting trumpet, saxophone, and rhythm section converse in soft, deliberate gestures. Its spaciousness gives every note room to breathe, creating an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. Unhurried yet profoundly resonant, it draws you in not through motion, but through the beauty of restraint.

Biisien nimet ovat upeita. Ihanan rauhallinen mutta kulkeva alku. Muutenkin pidän tämmöisestä rennosta jazz instrumentaalimusiikista.

Bu dun bu dun bu dun buuuuu dun

Nice background jazz with some improv style moments. Nothing life changing, but lovely!

4,0 - Ich kann hier nichts schreiben, was nicht schon geschrieben wurde, tolles Album. Highlights: So What, Flamenco Sketches

Parfait pour fumer des cigares en buvant du scotch.

Nice peacefull jazz album. 7.1/10

Felt like one really big song, a pretty good one

So smooth. I wish I liked this music more but I know that it is quality and groundbreaking. I never knew the trumpet could make me have the feels like this.

Optimal listening for a Friday afternoon. I miss chatting with my pal, Kelly about these tunes :/

This was the perfect soundtrack to Saturday morning. Drinking my coffee and getting into that jazz sound was a perfect moment!

Excellent

Greatness.

Miles Davis has one of my favorite horn tones and So What is a classic

Just really good jazz. Can appreciate the skill of the whole group.

Oh yeah miles davis

Exceptionally good.

A lovely jazz record.

Good tuneful jazz, evocative of sitting at a table in a smoky club, drinking an old fashioned I particularly enjoyed the mournful tone of Blue in Green, which takes you late into the night A lot of jazz feels like background music and a lot more is frankly unlistenable, Kind of Blue is neither. Sure its perfect background music but is also highly listenable as the focus of your attention. This album just exudes cool.

Very cool...

I certainly can't comment on this in a more eloquent way than has been previously. An amazing album. Very high 4s.

Great blues album. Nothing bad to say about it. Great for working in schoolwork and studying. Great to lay down and relax before sleeping.

I recognize the quality while still not especially enjoying jazz.

Puiki kombinacija Davis ir Coltrane, labai gražios melodijos, nepretenzingos.

Не бесячий джаз, ураа! Ну не мудрено, это же вроде как лучший джазовый альбом эва, что в целом чувствуется. Очень приятные мелодии, понравилось

beat wife

Nice !

Lekkere achtergrondmuziek

great album for a board game night

Great cast on this one. So What is a nice, smooth intro. This is just a mellow album overall. Just lounging at a pool hall on a Monday evening on the first two songs. Blue in Green is definitely my vibe. Bosch coming home and having a scotch after a long day of busting criminals. It's probably my favorite flavor of jazz. I thought the album was too short, so I'll go with a 4.

I respect it. Miles Davis is the best at the Jazz.

I've been getting more into jazz over the last several months so I was excited to revisit this album since last time I wasn't super into it. I definitely enjoyed it a lot more this time around but still not as much as I ought to. Guess I'm not the jazz connoisseur I thought I was... I'll try again later. Favorite track: Flamenco Sketches

I was not expecting to like this. But I did. It all felt brilliantly controlled and sounded great. I wasn't intensely listening, but I'll happily give it another go and try to do that. I think I assumed it's be more aggressive and Avant Garde jazz, but ion this listen at least t was really good.

Really good slow smooth jazz / blues album all round. 5 good tracks for any background playlist really

Always great! What an ensemble.

I’m not a big jazz fan but I’ve enjoyed some of the entries on this list and, predictably, this is my favourite of the bunch. I’m sure this deserves a 5 but I just don’t know jazz well enough and I don’t want to rate it primarily on reputation.

It's fine, but it's not for me.

Pretty peaceful.

awesome. anyone heard of this guy? - guy who’s been living under a rock for years

I enjoyed this, they are classics for a reason

I didn't use a private session for Spotify on this one. It's a drizzly Friday morning, sipping on French press coffee, and this is perfect mood music.

Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: N/A I was quite satisfied with this album. Good album length; doesn't overstay its welcome. Interesting compositions. It's my understanding that the record is relatively free form They have to color in the lines, but there's no rule saying which colors they need to use. I don't have a favorite track; to be honest, the record is so subdued, it was rare for more to notice that the track even changed. If, in the future, I decide I want to listen to Grade A jazz music, this is going to be my go-to album.

Better than Coldplay

A jazz classic! I loved it, nothing else left to say really. I wouldn't give it 5 stars though, it's not my favourite.

Feel almost obliged to give this a certain score. Unfortunately my listen quality was lacking when listening to this album, but I did still enjoy it.

Great jazz classic, would enjoy listening to this anytime.

Never knew much about jazz, but Miles Davis has made this such an enjoyable experience that I've added jazz into most of my rotations. Thank you for the eye opening experience.

beautiful. Somehow both relaxing and can be stressful if you’re stressed

4.5/5 first jazz album i listened to but he’s got better

Chill lounge vibes Jazz isn't my usual thing but I enjoyed this

Ryan Gosling

This is such a great album to dip your toes into jazz. Its easy listening, well spaced melodies, and nothing insane going on. It's nothing like say Charles Mingus or Frank Zappa. But it is blissful and calming.

Great and beautiful for an instrumental jazz album. Not always my bag, but this hit the spot today. Not sure id listen to it just for a relisten, but 100% the perfect background music for a get together.

8.8/10 i. love. jazz. i’ve always loved jazz, but have yet to explore this classic genre. always a good time, fantastic album. trumpets are great

Some bangers on here to kick off, just slows down too much for my tastes.

If you have heard Miles you have heard this album. Great artist, great music, a bit repetitive at this point with this being my third or fourth Davis album that sounds pretty much the same as the others. 7/10

# Album Name: Kind of Blue # Artist: Miles Davis # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Nice album. Good to listen to as a whole. Would be great with a cigar and some whiskey or rum. # Top Tunes: None that stuck out but as an album it worked. # Would I listen to it again? Yes

Not a big fan of free form jazz, although I do like jazz piano virtuoso Vince Guaraldi. Have to admit So What is pretty amazing. I like the piano/trumpet interplay. Also like Blue in Green. I could own this album.

Perfect soundtrack for a sunny Saturday at home with all the windows open, with a fresh post-rain breeze blowing through.

Fantastic, classic jazz album.

GOOD haunting, lonesome jazz with a delicious static behind it tasting of old vinyl, cloudy days, and muggy weather. So full of longing, this blue Blue album. Yet, somehow it makes me feel fully where I need to be and infused with some kind of something like hope.

Smooth!

Thought this was going to be 5 stars for sure. But having heard it against some other clearly 5 star albums I don’t think so, not for me. I just like the later Miles much better

7/10 jazz

god i wish i understood jazz enough to have my mind blown on this

Not really a jazz aficionado, but I dug it.

This is the kind of jazz I can work with.

I’m just starting to learn music theory and the piano and to appreciate jazz on a deeper level, so I’m sure I’m only scratching the surface of what they’re doing here. As such, I have a feeling this is an album I’m going to grow to appreciate more over time, but for today I’m just going with my gut response and that says 4/5. 4/5 Highlights: Freddie Freeloader Flamenco Sketches

A very pure form of jazz that's beautifully played, makes me feel like I'm at a fancy dinner party. The slower pace makes it fall behind more eccentric jazz albums for me personally

Back to back bangers with the Hives yesterday and Miles Davis today.

Started off hot and then certainly settled into a more relaxed tone. The whole thing was flawless though. Really easy listening. When I think of smooth jazz, this is exactly where my head goes.

Some pretty awesome jazz with Miles Davis crushing some trumpet. I feel like there were some absolute classic jazz songs on here because I think I recognized one or two songs. Unrelated but it made it think of this, if you ever want to see some impressive cheeks by a jazz trumpet player just google image search Dizzy Gillespie. That lad could blow a golf ball through a garden hose. Anyways, solid 4.

Classic

Very good, though no songs in particular jumped out at me as a standout favorite. I need to learn a lot more about jazz.

great as background music but idk for more than that

Best Jazz album I have ever listened too. It is however the only Jazz album I have ever listened too as well.

How much can be written about this record that hasn't already been said? As someone who has a healthy, yet understated, love of jazz, I am not as familiar with “Kind of Blue” as I perhaps should be. This probably comes in part, as a response to the opener “So What” alone. The piece is so ubiquitous, or feels so familiar, that recognising it outright, has almost become a shorthand for expressing a personal understanding and an indicating one might know what jazz ‘is’. So what can be said? The instruments are so separate, so specifically approachable, that directing your aural attention to each, suggests how easy it is to ignore how well the players interlace with one another as the overall composition plays out and emerges. As a result, the aesthetic, the listening experience, is certainly much closer to listening to classical than to interwar jazz that precedes this album, or the blues driven rock that “Kind of Blue” eventually had to compete with. That remarkable separation of instruments continues to give so much context to appreciating more contemporary forms of music and to realise how difficult it is to have unique instruments operate as a whole but remain distinct.

Great feeling

Beautiful listen despite jazz not being my sort of go to

This is the music I think off when I mention the blues genre. Really good and easy to listen. Only complaint is that songs are too long but that comes with the territory

Founding father of jazz for a reason. Infinitely listenable.

First track is already quite good. A 4 so far. Keeps going that way. Nice.

Kind of Blue [1001 albums] by Miles Davis: 8/10, A great introduction to a totally new genre to me. I'm absolutely certain that I will re-review this at some point once I've explored more of jazz, but this has served as a suitable first full jazz album. As with discovering any new genre, I find that it's moreso about discovering the "vocabulary" in a sense than anything else. I'm aware of the general workings of jazz and the history that lead to the albums like Kind of Blue that are frequently considered among the best of all time. If there's one fundamental concept in my understanding of music that this album, and as I expect, jazz as a whole, has challenged, it's the idea of directionality. In songwriting and music listening, I tend to find enjoyment in melodies, solos, and harmonies that develop in a way that feels like it's "going somewhere". While this is a pretty generala and ambiguous concept, the improvised sections of this album didn't fit with what I expect to hear in that sort of musical direction and it was the most challenging aspect of the listen.

Smooth, pure, unadulterated jazzzzz. +1 for being the real deal, & not junk from the Weather Channel’s on the 8’s.

Awesome jazz

Calmed my brain

The music is incredible, but I just don't love jazz.

Sounds like you’d describe jazz sounding like

Geiles Jazz Album. Eigentlich ist sowas nix für mich aber hatte nie das Bedürfnis abzuschalten oder zu Skippen. Saxophon Genuss für 45 Minuten. Fällt mir leider nur zu schwer es einen perfekten Score zu geben 4/5

There's something about hearing a few masters play their instruments together. As far as jazz goes, this brings the heat.

Look! It's Miles Davis from jazz! This album is immediately appealing, well-mannered and restrained, none of which being I'm looking for out of Miles Davis or John Coltrane. It is gorgeous, but a little anodyne.

A really good album. I didn’t know what to expect from it since my previous two albums from Davis have been a 5⭐️ and a 2⭐️ so I’m definitely hit or miss with him. I’ll be keeping this one saved for a while.

Jazzy. 4.4/5

I must say that I don't have the ear to review or rate jazz music effectively. I listened to this on a log drive taking Comet to a surgical appointment in the morning and I can say that it set the mood very effectively. It had a cool and calming effect on my driving, my nerves, my anxiety. I felt a bit sharper and more awake for listening to it. I liked the album quite a lot, but don't have many more words for it until I listen to some more and gain a better understanding of the genre. A good introduction though.

Classic.

Felt like I should have been hosting a fancy dinner party

29/1001 :: Miles Davis - Kind of Blue Heard before? :x: Would I revisit? :white_check_mark: Rating: 8 Fav Tracks: So What I realize this might sound insane but today was the first time I ever listened to this album in its entirety (twice+). I’ve been considering buying because I don’t have any jazz records and thought this might be a great place to start. And I think it a great place to start. I really enjoyed the listens today especially the 2nd time around even if I did feel like I was stuck in a Peanuts movie for a little bit. One thing I liked about listening to this album was feeling like it was an interpretive experience. Lastly, I generally can’t do serious work or write with music on but I think this might be different and I’m willing to try.

I don't know jazz, but I know what I like. This, I like this.

Really enjoy this genre!!

I was originally going to say that there was far too much horn in this album. But, seriously, the further it went on, the more it felt like I was reading a detective novel (which ironically didn't pair AT ALL when I tried to read several pages of the one I am reading now...). The jazz I've had on this list normally pairs well when I am doing work or jobs, but this album actually was really gripping as I went for a walk listening to it. Probably a bit too much horn for me, but big names and a lot less big band sound than the last Miles Davis album we got. Think moody, dark little venue. Wait, is that Del Paxton! Nope, he's fictional. But that's the kind of music I'd expect to hear in that venue. A solid 4 stars.

3.5 - Good

Fav: Blue Is Green Least Fav: All Blues

Took a great nap to this

Very solid jazz, as to be expected! Admittedly not something I'd find myself listening to on any sort of regular basis, but it's good stuff.

The first jazz album I bought. Still holds up, but have to admit it's slightly too laid back for me now? Still, really good.

Would like to hear more jazz in bars over here. It's all reggaeton in here. https://youtu.be/Z5uMRhMMdGg

extremely relaxing jazz im sleepy now (or maybe im just sleep deprived but this album is definitely a mood)

Relaxing jazz, great for studying 4

On hieno levy! Selkeästi parempi mitä aikaisemmin kuunneltu Davisin levy.

What the hell can I possibly say about Miles Fucking Davis? Read this essay by someone who knows what they’re talking about. https://www.jazzwise.com/features/article/kind-of-blue-how-miles-davis-made-the-greatest-jazz-album-in-history

This album goes way back to the 1950s, and was/is considered revolutionary for its new approach to jazz. Listening to it now, 66 years after it was released, it does not seem outdated. Most jazz combos sound pretty much the same to me, but this one seems a notch above the rest.

Classic, elegant, timeless, smooth.

Good stuff. Reminds me that I should listen to more jazz.

Great Jazz

Pre-listening thoughts: ayoooo this is maybe one of three jazz albums I am psyched about! I’ve already basically heard this in full but let’s relisten anyways Post/during listening thoughts: yeah this is smooth but also very engaging I feel. Sometimes jazz tends to lose me but I really enjoyed this throughout. It’s sort of in that Vince Guaraldi Trio vein of jazz (I’m sure Miles Davis came first but sorry I watched Peanuts cartoons before spinning a Kind of Blue vinyl). Anyways I freaked with this 8/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: lowkey yes? Fav tracks: So What, Blue in Green Least fav tracks: n/a

Much more accessible than Birth of the Cool - I think modal jazz is easier to interpret since horizontal harmony is closer to Western & Indian classical music

I was starting to get tired of jazz. This album piqued my interest in the genre again. All the songs are very good background music. It's safe to say that Miles Davis is the best jazz musician of the '50s and '60s. I wonder what this week has in store... 4 stars for "Kind of Blue"

I knew this album before, good stuff.

Miles... had the linguistic skills of a drunk sailor (he swore a LOT).

Ok, I get it now. This was the jazz album I've been waiting for. I sat in the dark, put my feet up, and tried really hard to just get lost in this one and it paid off. The whole band sounded tight on this album. The pianos were wonderful, the drums sharp and crisp, and the brass blaring with purpose. I think that's what I liked most about this album: it felt like it had a point. It didn't meander all over the place, leaving the listener exhausted and frazzled. It felt thoughtful and a bit more structured while still playful. I'll keep this one in my back pocket for a great album to put on when I need a relaxer, or entertaining, or maybe just feeling kind of blue. Jazz in general isn't something I turn to frequently, but this one definitely got to me, so it's an easy 4 stars.

Beautiful record, Miles smooth talking through brass - it’s a must own.

Genre defining album. Very cool and atmospheric.

This record is great. The production is good, the performances are amazing, and it's easy enough to listen to. Favourite Track(s): All Blues Least Favourite Track(s): So What

Très bien

I feel like I've heard this album a hundred times before. Absolutely timeless.

I’m sure the technical aspects are revolutionary but the vibes feel like I’m waiting in a Nordstroms.

God stemning

Iconic

It was a solid Miles Davis album.

Well, a classic for sure. I was listening to it religiously 4-5 years ago for a typographical Miles Davis poster design I was working on. So I'm here fully biased :) This album was my "proper" introduction to jazz, apart from the usual coffee shop jazz and a couple of songs I randomly added to my playlist out of curiosity. It’s a classic, and I genuinely enjoy it. Every note hits the right spot. Definitely a good introduction to jazz as a genre. However, I can also see that we talk way too much about Kind of Blue, while there are probably so many other great jazz albums out there that don’t get as much attention. There’s definitely a bias that comes from familiarity. Also, I usually overlooked the songs apart from "So What" and "Freddie Freeloader" in my past listenings, but this re-listen after a while helped me re-discover "All Blues" and I enjoyed it, especially the intro: doo doo-doo DOO doo doo-doo DOO doo doo-doo DOO

Awesome blues artist, really enjoyed it

Jonaas Timmerhout doet z’n petje af. Klassieker, dit album. Wellicht een 10/10, ik doe nog even voort en zorg ervoor dat ik er me mee vereenzelvig.

Enjoyed this more than Bitches Brew.

I like to think I don't know shit about jazz and that if you played me this or Colgate Comedy Hour legends like Marcus "The Worm" Hicks or Paul Bufano, I would not be able to tell the difference. But I'd be lying to myself. I am fucking AMAZED that I know all these songs. I've never listened to this album, I don't really listen to jazz willingly except when I feel like I should acculturate myself to something different, but I recognize this stuff. And it's good! It's kinda like listening to good opera, or good classical - it just sticks with you. I don't know what modal jazz is. I don't know what bebop is. I read about these things and it's like reading higher level math. I think a lot of jazz sounds like elevator music (which I would not argue with someone who said this one does, too) and I don't know the finer points. But this is just nice, pleasant music. Easy to put on, easy to listen to, something to make everyone but the most distinguished hater happy.

Nice jazz.

literally every song in there we played in middle and high school jazz band-nostalgia also made me feel fancy and chill @ the same time :)

I’d definitely like to spend more time with this album and with Miles in general.

Kinda hard to separate the songs but no doubt it was a vibe, I guess.

Not a jazz fan and first time listening to this album, I appreciated the listen. Each song has its mood and my favorite is "All blues". Listened the album twice: first time peacefully and second time at work. Each time seemed like time has passed swiftly.

One of the best jazz albums of all time.

Cooooler than the other side of the pillow. ‘All Blues’ was 🔥🔥

Excellent!

Do you like Jazz? Well this is the album for you!

I'm listening on YouTube so I will have to pay close attention to where the song breaks are So What- love how Davis takes the lead, but almost immediately gives the saxophonist equal time Freddie Freeloader Blue in Green All Blues Flamenco Sketches On Green Dolphin Street Fran-Dance Stella by Starlight Love for Sale

absolutely epic, can’t go wrong with jazz really!! apart from the length of the songs, having 5 songs in an album is very kind and considerate!! if it was any longer i would’ve probably crashed out, but love miles davis what a legend

The album felt short. I'm used to prog rock/metal and I can see how much Miles Davis has inspired to many musicians. And yet I felt this album too short. I wish it was longer

Same as previous Miles Davis album. Very pleasant. I will always enjoy miles davis. the entire album was pleasing to listen to and calming.

As someone who admittedly knows next to nothing about jazz, it’s difficult to understand the hype behind this one. Nor do I particularly enjoy the genre, but this is difficult to fault once those personal preferences are cast aside. It’s a very delicate, intricate record. I’ve no doubt that repeat spins reward the listener with new, or rather unnoticed, flourishes from previous visits. Listened to: walking through BBG. Favorite track: Blue in Green

I have definitely heard pieces of this album in many places and I think it's really easy to listen to an exceeds my fairly low expectations. Recorded jazz is not my favorite, but this one held me for the most part. Would probably go 3.5 personally, but bumping for importance--an importance you can actually feel throughout the work.

Fantastic

Who wouldn't know this record? One of a kind, though not a personal favorite.

Cool effortless jazz, its the kinda Jazz I think I could get into, but also I feel its so inoffensive it could be played in a smoking room, or elevator or on hold to virgin media....

Really enjoyed this, I would definitely give it another listen but this time in a coffee shop with a good book!

Jazz. Very evocative. Good background music.

Jazzzzz

Não sou muito Jazz, mas entretanto me surpreendi com que ouvi.

Already listened ❤️ Very nice jazz album

Chilled me fr

Always transports me to a particular state of mind. I can feel its age, or at least its place in time, but it’s also still feels fresh seventy years on. Great to have a coffee with, while watching the rain from a cafe window.

My favorite Jazz album of all time. It takes me to a different place each time I listen.

Goated jazz

Very pretty!

Enjoyed this a lot. How could you not?

Brilliant through and through. Some of the best players performing some of their best work. Like I have said with every jazz record here, it reminds me of high school.

Wasn't quite my vibe, but I can appreciate the artistry.

Techille

A rare jazz album that I might actually seek out to listen to again. It’s interesting, unpretentious, and as cool as the other side of the proverbial pillow.

I am a jazz idiot. I don't understand the difference in free form, module and standard jazz. I do understand that I like this music though, as it is very soothing and this book would not be complete without an album from Miles Davis. I feel like I am on the set of "Bosch" or reading a James Ellroy book (minus all the racism, sexism and all the other crap that fills his books) while hearing this music. Perhaps I am a private eye roaming around town to the background music of Freddie Freeloader. How often would I revisit this album? Well, that would remain to be seen. I did enjoy the Herbie Hancock this book gave us and added it to my collection of albums. "Blue in Green" is a great song. Just sets a wonderfully moody scene. What's so cool is John Coltrane is featured on this album as well. I probably should have known he would be on another jazz album and not just on his own (A Love Supreme). I liked "In a Silent Way" but probably liked this one more. Excited to hear "Bitches Brew."

I still really liked it. Jackie was less of a fan

Miles Davis

So nice and soothing

jazzão bolado. lindo demais papo reto só os instrumento falano asneira daquele naipe. gostei bastante!

My jazz background is in La La Land and Soul, so don't come for me. -Blue in Green: *turns up collar of trench coat, lights cigarette, and walks out into the seedy streets of 1930s New York* -Flamenco Sketches: for sippin’ whiskey with a dame who’s no good for you Okay I like it, Picasso - 4 stars

Miles Davis is brilliant, this was an unusual listen in the sense that it sort of washed over me and didn't hook me as such, but sort of went deep into me in the background, unknown. I'd like to listen again when not working to see how it feels a second time.

Peeing your pants can't be as cool as this. Favorite Track: "So What".

PERIODDDDDDD

4 Stars (11/15)

Tippity top notch jazz. Truly magical. Obviously I know and love Miles Davis, but I had never sat down to listen to this album and it's a masterpiece.

This album makes me think of my dad so it has an extra charm for me. Nice, smooth jazz, not too pretentious or jarring. You don't need to be a jazz expert to enjoy it.

Smooth listen. Although it’s Jazz and not my fave, it is a arrangement from a legendary player. I recognize it’s probably best in class especially for the time. 4.5/5

At first I wasn’t really into this. I know we’re supposed to like it, but I can only handle so many moments of saxophone cat-strangling solos. Still, as it went on it improved and I really liked the back three better. More mellow. “Blue In Green” and “Flamenco Sketches” were both solid, most importantly IMO due to the use of space and allowing the piano to feature more. Overall, the purposeful use of certain modes only in recording and improvising is some next level shit that hurts the head to think about. But impressive nonetheless. At the end of the day…this album remains well respected, but it is just jazz to me.

An undeniable classic, I feel lame even saying this is great because everyone knows it is.
