1001 Albums Summary

enjoyed the piano intro. track 2 is great, definitely one i'll get some mileage out of. up to track 5 now and enjoying everything so far. plus, track 5 is one of the best so far. ohh, track 6 is where that rat in a cage line comes from lol. tracks 10 & 11 are my kind of thing. porcelina is a banggeerrrr ! oh, take me down is lovely as well. this album is really interesting - the varied sounds all balance each other out really nicely. 1979 is obviously a classic. thru the eyes of ruby is great. nearly teared up at the outro of that song, it was so unexpected and beautiful. we only come out at night is great too. now i think that's enough track-by-track lol. overall i really enjoyed this album. i found it really interesting, engaging, and at times unexpectedly soft and pretty. there were some points where i found the vocals grating, e.g. 'in the arms of sleep'... but the vocal and instrumental performances across the album were overall good to great (instrumentally, mostly great). i feel this was a really good album to start with as well, since i'm not overly familiar with rock music in general and this album is so sprawling and touches on a lot of different sounds. 3.9/5

never listened to a full david bowie album before. heard a few songs. i love his song "chubby little loser". opening instrumental track is cool. track 2 has a good groove to it, only a short one though. track 3 isn't for me. it's kinda...... goofy lol track 4 immediately sounds way better. OHHH I LOVE WHEN SYNTHS DO THAT! cascading airy synths are the easiest way to hook me in, seriously. nah this song is great. to think this came out in the 70s is crazy - it reminds me so much of the summery bedroom pop/indie pop i was listening to a lot of a few years ago. artists like gus dapperton, still woozy, boy pablo and so on. really good song. track 5 is really solid too. great stuff. a bit moodier but not oppressively so, still fun to listen to and sonically rich. track 6 'be my wife' isn't bad, maybe a little repetitive. okay nvm, the whole last minute of the song is a huge fantastic guitar solo. gg bowie track 7 wtf? what a gorgeous opening. rest of the song is just... okay to me. the harmonica is actually kind of annoying, and i'm not a harmonica hater or anything like that. it's very repetitive though. warszawa is excellent. very blade runner. art decade is cool. this album has really mellowed out now i feel. interesting how this has virtually become an instrumental album now. i bet this was a hell of a listening experience in the 70s lol. final track, subterraneans, is just a solid ambient kind of thing. this album is cool. really really forward-thinking. kind of shocking that this was released in 1977... but it does sort of feel like the 1st half is one album, and the 2nd half is another entirely. i think it would benefit from a bit more cohesion. the harmonica on track 7 was annoying, and that 3rd track being a bit too goofy and jaunty brings it down for me too. project is a great length, concise without being too short. lots of really good ideas. 3.3/5

never realised before that rolling in the deep is stomp clap music. she's got a good voice but this album is pretty bland to me, mostly radio pop. i like the r&b influence on he won't go and one and only, but every other track fell flat for me. brave to call a track lovesong. oh haha, it's a cover, that's actually kinda sick. someone like you is well written, i just wish the instrumental was different. ah well. 2.3/5

not bad, decently enjoyable listen. a few good tunes. california dreamin holds up well. i also quite enjoyed 'you baby'. 3.1/5

nice. i do like ambient music. 1/1 and 2/2 are smooth and entrancing, but i found 2/1 and 1/2 to be a little boring. i imagine this album was a pioneering one in the ambient genre but i think it serves as a reminder of how the early work in a certain style isn't necessarily the best, regardless of its influence and impact. tbh i didn't really think either of the middle two tracks felt like music for an airport. 3.3/5

not bad, some highlights (sailor's life, who knows where the time goes) but overall a little boring. also some of the songs are too jaunty for my tastes. 2.8/5

meh. opening track was really cool. never before was decent. smoke on the water is overrated. didn't enjoy much about this one

this is actually fire. really impressed. love rocket, think that's a bit of an underappreciated gem, same with gods of war. pour some sugar on me is definitely a bit overrated, but hysteria (title track) might actually be a little underrated. 4.1/5, a couple of skips but overall really consistent and enjoyable

when it's good, it's really good. unfortunately for me that was only about 10 of the 20 tracks on this album. 3/5

not great throughout but kinda brought it back by the end. GREAT closing track. the final stretch of 4 tracks brought it up for me but the rest of the album was very hit or miss. 2.8/5

funnily enough, I got this album on vinyl the other day for £12. obviously it's a classic album, so that was a pretty good deal just to have it on the shelf. unfortunately, I don't really like the album. lol. the first four tracks are all over the place and none of them are particularly good. 'walking in your footsteps' and 'mother' are two pretty low lows to me, and having those two separated by just one song is so weird. what a jarring change of pace in such a short time. 'miss gradenko' is okay, and 'synchronicity II' is a step in the right direction. then of course we get to 'every breath you take', which is a fantastic song and, I think, carries a lot of the weight of this album on its back. 'wrapped around your finger' is also a vibe. side B is a lot better than side A overall - to me it doesn't really have a miss on it. just makes the first half seem worse in comparison because what the hell were they doing? absolutely just messing about. no wonder virtually all the visualisers & music videos are on side B. 2.2/5

don't know what would possess someone to write 'stray cat blues'. other than that pile of shit song, the rest of the album is okay. unfortunately that one really drags it down, and it didn't hit any notable highs for me. 1.4/5

this is fire. enjoyed reading up on the context surrounding it and gaining a better understanding of the album as a statement from courtney love about the way women are treated in the media and in society. great performances all round. 3.9/5

some good songs but i can't bear to listen to this guy's voice unfortunately. 2.3/5
