4.5 Would be a 5 if most songs weren't covers i think

4 Rest of the album doesn't quite live up to Roundabout but it is one of the best songs ever written to be fair. Still a solid album though

4 A bit inconsistent but the highs are high and the lows not that low

4.5 My least favourite of their first 6 albums but still great

2.5 First 6 songs were alright but usually there was that something holding them back from being really good, maybe the vocals/lyrics? The last song was just ridiculously overindulgent, thought it was starting to drag on by minute 4 and then it lasted 15 more

4 Enjoyed this a lot more than the other electronica albums I've heard. Could still do with trimming down a bit tbh, cut out a few songs.

5 This was great. Bluebird, let me roll it, nineteen hundred and eighty five... wouldn't be at all out of place on any Beatles album quality-wise Third listen and I'm upping it to a 5

2.5 Actually enjoyed this whenever there was no vocals, but his voice was so grating

5 Loved this, knew a couple of the songs but was really surprised how strong it was throughout

4 Interesting voice haha, I preferred the more upbeat songs to the slower ballads but still pretty solid throughout

2.5 Enjoy stuff like this far more when the vocalists aren't trying to sound 'scary'

4 Pretty cool for the most part. Could have done with that one song where he's trying to defend his right to beat his wife and hate the gays

4.5 Disagree so much with some of the top reviews here. This was really good, sounds so ahead of its time and some really fun lyrics

4 After the first song I was dreading the rest but after that I actually really enjoyed it. The guy is a really good songwriter and sounding a bit like thom Yorke isn't exactly a bad thing

4 Nice album, wasn't expecting a love song about a trans couple on an 80s punk album

4 First I've heard of Costello and tbh his voice is not what I was expecting from a man who kind of looks like woody Allen. Admittedly wasn't huge on the first track but it really got better after that

3 The only two ways I could find to listen to this album were a YouTube playlist complete with ads for online casinos and cat food, or an Internet archive recording intercut with commentary in Spanish. I wasn't sure which of these was closest to how the band originally intended.

4.5 The two longer songs do drag a bit but the shorter ones are all great. Is quite funny that these guys are from california and weren't born anywhere near the bayou

4.5 On first listen I honestly thought this was a bit rubbish but then putting it on again I dont know what I was thinking, its great

3 Can definitely see how influential it's been but really hasn't stood the test of time the way a lot of other 60s stuff has imo

5 Has never been my favorite of theirs but on this listen it really clicked

4 Not quite as good as some of their later stuff but most of the songs are still pretty good and it does have psycho killer

4 Didnt really stand out at all to me on the first listen but on the second time round, this is a genuinely really good album, very varied styles

3 Genuinely better than I was expecting and the best 5/6 songs were pretty good. Unfortunately there were another 4/5 that were just mediocre and a couple that were outright awful. Someone also needs to tell him that songs can be shorter than 5 minutes

4 Not huge into metal but this was pretty good,

5 Beautiful album, she has such a great voice and the whole thing flows so nicely

4 Some great songs on this one, feels like a bit of a random collection though rather than an album that flows together

4 Love the first half but I feel the last 3 songs aren't on the same level

2 I get that this was hugely influential and I could see the ways that so many bands i like were inspired, but I just would rather be listening to any of those bands. This sucks. And any good will that it would get from me for the influence is canceled out by John lydon being a complete bellend

4 Liked it, not every song worked for me but most did

5 Love The Who, and this was a great debut, feel like they don't get the respect they deserve because of the Stones and Beatles

4 Definitely reminds me of tears for fears but that's not a bad thing, listened on the way to my sisters wedding so big day was definitely appropriate

4 Don't hate the radio ads concept but I just think the songs aren't quite as strong as my generation (two days ago haha), bar I can see for miles.

4.5 I like Muse, you can definitely hear the Radiohead influence but I think they have a more unique style than people give them credit for, especially on this album

3.5 Message in a bottle is obviously great and a few of the other songs were pretty good but overall didn't quite hit for me

2 The story the album tells is pretty disturbing but considering he was both a 70s rockstar AND French, he should probably be praised for his restraint rather than criticised for it. The music is pretty good on the first and last tracks but ruined by the mic-in-mouth vocals, and the shorter track in-between, while the vocal are less annoying, are a lot less interesting musically. In terms of the lyrics, on the one hand a lot of other artists have done worse in real life, but Elvis or Jimmy Page never wrote a whole album about it. And it seems like Gainsbrough was uncomfortably interested in these themes, which makes it difficult to give the benefit of the doubt - especially since the whole presentation (the cover, his girlfriends schoolgirl-voice lines, etc.) seem to want to lean into the shock value.

4 Some real 'ohh that's who that was' moments here. Without you - coconut is quite a vibe change

5 Listened to this a while ago and though it was an ok album with a few great songs but the whole thing really clicked this time round, i totally get the hype now

3 I started liking it more towards the end, but overall didn't really do it for me. Seemed like the vocals were mixed too high compared to the instrumentation maybe

5 Another easy 5, black dog and when the levee breaks are amazing, not to mention stairway to heaven

5 Maybe the best hip-hop album in my admittedly not worth all that much opnion. The flow and lyrics are perfect throughout

2.5 Was impressive to learn the story behind this and there's no denying how skilled a player he is. However, this is still ultimately 67 minutes of one man playing one instrument with occasional breaks for 3 minutes of clapping.

3.5 Some really great songs here but not almost 2 hours worth of them. Having two versions of the same song is a bit self-indulgent, the 35 mins of jams at the end even more so. Maybe George needed Lennon and McCartney in a way.

4 A really enjoyable album, again didn't understand any lyrics but it sounded good

5 Legendary singer releases his final album in 2016 and dies days later. Sounds familiar. A really good album, haunting almost. Death is universal but not an aspect of life that you hear artists reflect on so much, especially from someone who knows its so close at hand

3.5 Some great bits but the album (and a lot of the songs on it) just dragged on too much. Another that could have massively benefitted from a little restraint

4 Take five is my favourite of the (admittedly very few) jazz songs I know. The rest of the album isn't quite as good as that song but still great

1 I once listened to Drakes 'certified lover boy' just after it had come out in an attempt to understand what all the fuss was about with him. Because of that punishing mistake this was only the second worst album I've ever heard - at least napalm death kept it under 30 minutes. There were points in this where for 15 seconds or so I'd think, this isn't so bad - a nice guitar riff maybe. And then the singer would start scream/growl/choking out something completely illegible, or the drummer would decide to see how fast, hard and tunelessly he could smash up his drums and it was back to being awful. The fact that the second half was by an almost entirely different group of musicians was the most impressive bit, because they'd somehow managed to find people worse than the first lot. I've tried to see the positives in the albums I haven't enjoyed so much, and almost all of the time I can get why other people would. But it's genuinely incomprehensible to me why anyone would actually chose to listen to something like this. Sorry to those who do :(

4.5 Never been a huge personal Jesus fan so wasn't expecting too much but honestly there's so much more to this album, and I actually enjoyed that song more in the context of the rest of it

4.5 Not as consistent as MLIR, but maybe the highest highs of any blur album

4.5 Was surprised that this was on the list over Ironman which was the album of his I'd heard before (and is great) but honestly this is fantastic too so fair enough

3.5 I still love sweet child o mine but honestly a bit tired of paradise city and welcome to the jungle and the rest of the album isn't quite on the level of those songs. Not bad or anything but not something I'd really chose to listen through as a whole again really
