Every time I listen it gets better.
This album is so ahead of its time, it’s not even funny.
Lauryn Hill more like Lauryn Mountain. More like Lauryn Kilimanjaro, MORE LIKE LAURYN BIG HILL.
BILLY JEWEL (like a precious stone not like the religion/ethnicity ok? relax)
This is one of the greatest albums of all time. DON’T FIGHT ME ON THIS.
This is like that story of rock soup:
He came with only a stone and an empty stomach. He told her the stone could make soup, but as it boiled he mentioned how good it would taste with an onion, a carrot, a bone. She added each thing, and by nightfall he had a fine meal, while the stone sat useless at the bottom of the pot.
Except the only extra ingredient is ‘La Grange'
My ‘theory' is that I have a, sort of, ‘hybrid’ opinion about this...
I don’t like this right now, but I can appreciate it, from a distance.
Huge apologies to all fans of screaming. I hope the lead singer had
some throat soother or something.
I like ‘cure for the itch’, though - sounds like Aphex Twin.
The benign comedy…
I can appreciate the production, no doubt about that. But it’s not for me.
Songs like 'Songs of Love' and 'A Woman of the World’ brought it up from a 2 to 2.5.
Insane voice on this guy btw.
Hmmm the omega shit band huh?
Album title change petition:
Zeros to zeros
Amazing voice. All the audience interactions add something unique to this album.
It’s really good. BUT…
… the second half does not hold up to the first. The first side is one of the best sides of any disc.
Bob, please don’t put a 16 min song at the end of the album. Cheers!
I’m know he’s made worse records…
I’m know he’s made better ones too.
The last of the music I would want to listen to.
If you asked me to judge one of these songs in isolation, I would likely say: “This song is fine, but I’m glad it will end and that other, completely different songs will play in the sonic space it occupied, for which it barely earned its welcome.” That’s how I usually talk at parties.
But together? How many songs do you want me to listen to with instruments that sound like they’re made of used tin cans? And backing harmonies featuring the bus driver from the Simpsons?
Nah.
My heart is broken…
Some songs are quite good, and the variety is something I can appreciate.
However, some of the lyrics are absolute dog ass and he pisses me off sometimes.
Glad I listened though!
Now I’m experienced.
WTF is foxy lady? I’m not so sure on that one…
How did they make these sounds? Incredible. 1967? For realz?
Some songs are good for background music, would never add these to my monthly playlists.
First half is definitely better.
Last song was the final nail in the coffin…
More like Bums N’ Hoses.
BANGER AFTER BANGER.
So good.
This guy is a legend and you should listen to this album.
It baffles me though, how these legends always end up making some really shit songs.
I guess it’s similar to a chef fucking up a dish in their kitchen? But then again why would they let the dish reach a table?
Anyway, I’m talking about 'Dancing Out In Space' and ‘Heat' reaching this album… Maybe Bowie was high again.
He makes up for it with ‘Where are We Now?’ and ‘Valentine’s Day’
Otherwise this is well worth a listen! If I could give it 3.75 I would.
Yee whatever
The production here is pretty incredible… Some of the lyrics are obnoxious, but I think that’s the point, doesn’t make me want to listen to them though.
Worth listening to.
This album is really excellent.
Melodies are catchy and so well supported by the instrumentation.
His voice is funny but fits the music so well.
Literally dookie.
They improved so much in 10 years… Gives me hope for my own personal development.
Everything but this album...
I mean, it’s ok, but I’m hearing wounded now.
This guy makes me feel like anyone could make music if they were pretentious enough.
Just look at the title...
That being said, I did enjoy a few songs, so I have to give it a decent score.
The style feels overused throughout, I enjoy very varied albums.
And some of the lyrics man… Please listen to ‘Fable of the brown ape’, you’ll understand what I mean. Maybe I’m not ‘profound enough’ to understand them.
I’m happy SOMEONE is ensuring our heritage is preserved.
All those jam varieties are important!
LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM, and if it doesn’t work for you, get an ear transplant.
Who are these guys The Shitles? Maybe Shitty Hendrix? Maybe The Rolling Kidney Stones? The Poors?
I guess someone had to crawl (with no arms or legs) before anyone could walk...
You know that friend who thinks they can make music? Imagine they were given a studio to record in... THIS is what would result from that nightmare scenario.
On a more serious note, the song Section 43 is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard. This album is one of the worst I’ve ever heard. If I was being nice I would say the album had a couple of songs on it, I guess?
I’m pretty sure if this was the only music around in the 60s the Cold War would have ended in self-annihilation, and it would’ve been the correct thing to do.
His voice sometimes sounds like David Bowie, sometimes like David Byrne, and sometimes like Freddie Mercury.
It’s a pretty short album, but totally worth a quick listen.
I think I need to listen a couple more times to fully enjoy it, but it just feels a little repetitive for me at the moment… Not sure how to explain, but the variety is just not what I’m looking for.
Insists upon itself.
Some pretty good songs, some pretty bad songs.
Production and instrumentation is experimental, groovy, and interesting.
Overall an interesting listen, but not the greatest.
I would kill to have 1/10th of their skill, but I would also kill to avoid this album.
Excellent musicianship, but I wouldn't listen again.
I don’t really care for live albums that much, they’re more something to be impressed by and move on. Enjoyable but music for me is something I want to re-experience and get to learn and know with time. I can’t do that with a 23 min song I’m sorry…
I thought it was ‘Li-Nérd’?
Such a great album, just excellent music.
FREE BIIIIRD YEAH!
Don’t copy an album title and then make a considerably worse one.
I didn’t really enjoy it that much, I’ll be honest.
It feels too punky without the charm that an album like, for example, London Calling.
I can also admit that I think it would grow on me if I listened again.
I need to listen to this again, even though it’s 2 hours long.
At first I was super excited to listen to this because I knew about the band and I love the song “1979".
The first side had me feeling disappointed even though I was saving some songs. It was a little too harsh for me.
As the album continued I started liking it more and more, with side 2 being vastly superior to side 1 for me.
Their sound is really beautiful and the variety of styles on this bumps it from a 3.5 to 4.
I think this is my favorite Kinks album to date.
Strong message and very cohesive. As usual, super whimsical melodies which provides a balance to it ’taking itself seriously’.
Will listen again.
I was pleasantly surprised. Sort of sounded like female Radiohead for a decent amount(makes sense with the song This Mess We’re In being written for Thom Yorke).
Not sure why I like this less than smashing pumpkins (Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness), because it feels just as varied and high quality in terms of instrumentation and productions, this being a little more produced. I guess I’m just getting a bit sick of this alternative style from this time…
Pretty good, and will listen to more of PJ.
Some of the lyrics are a little disturbing so it ends up being cringe.
I actually like this style a lot, was not expecting to like it based on the reviews. For 2004 this feels ahead of its time.
Eventually though it became too much of the same thing and too low quality. It’s a no from me dog.
I really enjoyed this, it’s not too long.
The style is fun and catchy and you can’t go wrong with that.
Not much variety because they fall into their style so much. I don’t think many people were making music like this in the early 80s, so it seems they relied heavily on this type of instrumentation for all the songs.
Either way it worked pretty well. I liked it, but could understand if someone found it annoying.
I mean, it’s Radiohead. So it’s good.
But, going into this my expectations are higher than going into a random artist I’ve never heard of, this will my listening experience and also my score.
I think my favorite track is ‘A Punch Up at a Wedding’, banger. Also like
One of the things I like about Radiohead is how they have such a distinct style and they explore the full range within that style, each song is also distinct despite a shared style. And I know this is just how styles work, but I mean that Radiohead really have breadth within Also, the albums are cohesive, but not in a frustrating, repetitive way. Not sure why I like this, but I do.
SECOND SIDE IS BETTER!
Fun! But not my cup of tea.
Either way I have to appreciate the craftsmanship and skill, so I can’t give it less than a 4.
Like kinda shit tbh, not sure why this guy is one of the greats. Songs are far too repetitive.
What the fuck is this shit?
They make beautiful music, all very ahead of its time, and it always surprises me.
The one thing that bothers me is the lack of ‘variety’. Essentially what I mean by this is that on a first time listen, a lot of the songs sort of blend into each other. You could call this cohesive style, but many bands, like Radiohead, the Beatles, the Clash, do this without it feeling repetitive, even on first listen. And I know Fleetwood Mac can do it.. I’ve listened to Rumours.
Apart from that, super good, especially for a double disk! Incredible.
Will be listening again!
