Yes!! Love this one. The Highways of My Life is one of my favourite songs of all time <3
This album's fine. There are definitely some Beach Boys Pet Sounds vibes, mixed with CSNY and Simon & Garfunkel. Which should mean I'd absolutely love this. But to be honest, every song sounds quite similar and none of it jumps out. I don't hate the sound, it's just a little bland. I think I would've loved this in 2008. The cover is gorgeous though. 6/10
The further into this album I got, the less I liked it. First couple of songs were fine, not amazing but okay. But by the time I got to Pretty Mary Kay, I was so done with the dreamy vibes and his voice. I had never heard of Elliott Smith and I now know why. This is not my thing.
This is a hard one to rate for me. I need to be in a certain mood to really enjoy this (a late night with a glass of whisky maybe?). It definitely deserves more than 3 stars but I don't entirely feel like it's a 4 star album.
A very solid 4. I really enjoyed this album but it doesn't entirely deserve 5 stars.
Love many of the instrumentals, but Lou Reed's vocals really really grate on me. This album also seems to lack some coherence.
When I was younger, I might have found these lyrics edgy or funny even. Now, I just find them really creepy. There's a self-hatred and self-importance simultaneously oozing out, which really rubs me the wrong way. Shame, because I do really like the music! That has a sparkle, diversity and coherence I really enjoy.
This dichotomy makes this album really hard to rate for me. But I think the vocals and lyrics irk me so much that the music itself can't make up for it enough.
More like modern art than just music. Not the easiest to listen to, but I'm really impressed. Definitely a journey.
It's fine. Entirely unmemorable.
Shit, why have I never really listened to Janis Joplin before? I've always liked her hits, and this album's a banger!
Not sure if this is really a five-star album or it's nostalgia on my side. But since I'm rating for enjoyment, it's five stars for me! This album was great to rage to as a teenager and it's still great now.
Not sure what to think of this. Weird as fuck but kinda catchy and cheerful too. Don't think I'll listen to it again though.
Yeah I really don't get why people like Leonard Cohen. His voice is so droning and there's no melody to it. The only okay song on this was the Partisan, and that's because of the woman's voice in the chorus. I can't believe so many of his albums are on this list. I'm not looking forward to the others.
Quite fun, catchy. Don't looove his voice but it's okay. Band is really tight. Don't like the cover.
7,5/10
I don't hate I, it's quite mellow and smooth but around halfway through I was just a bit bored with it, even though I really liked it at the start. Meh.
Yeah this is cool. I think people forget the synth had only just come in. For example, the Beatles first used one for Abbey Road in 1969, so all this was brand new. Of course bands like this wanted to experiment with it, and for audiences, this would have been amazing to see live. I really like it as a funky take on classical music.
Such a weird one for me. This has some of my favourite Beatles tracks (Back in the USSR, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Martha My Dear, Blackbird, Helter Skelter), and most of my least fave ones (Wild Honey Pie, Piggies, Long Long Long, Revolution 9). It's still such a great album though. So even though it might be my least favourite Beatles album, that doesn't say much because I love them so much. They're really finding their own styles on this one, which I really appreciate.
I've never really liked Bowie (his hits are okay) and this album hasn't changed my mind. I like a lot of the instrumentals, but as I read the reviews, I get the feeling that most of that is Brian Eno's work. I'm looking forward to getting those in this list now. I really hate Bowie's nasal voice, I feel the album would've been better without vocals. I appreciate the art of this album though, I just feel it could've been better.
They're doing some cool stuff on this album but it makes me so anxious. I don't need more anxiety in my life, I need less...
First song is a banger, but the rest of the album got a bit boring. I don't hate it, but it's missing a spark for me.
Chill, nice, really good. I love this and will definitely listen to more by Beth Orton.
I didn't expect to enjoy this album as much as I am.
Mr. Brightside is now stuck in my head, of course. This album has all the hits that were overplayed on the radio, but I have to say they are fun. Yeah I like this album.
Man with a guitar. Just chill folk, nothing really amazing but its nice.
Music with Rocks In.
I do wish there was a bit more variety. All the songs are bangers, and AC/DC rocks, but that's all they do.
I liked this at the start, but started to dislike it more and more. Ska is fine for a song or two, and after that I'm really done with it.
Good roadtrip rock. Really liked it and I might even bump up the score on a relisten.
I love Queen, but I don't think this is their best album. It's great though.
I've never loved Nirvana, but always thought they were fine. However, this album really showcases how Kurt Cobain really can't sing. I feel really bad for his throat, especially on Pennyroyal Tea. This album has done nothing to change my mind on Nirvana, but it's my first Nirvana album in this project, so maybe the studio albums might do something for me.
Gay synth pop! I'm here for it.
Pretty cool jazz, great for a rainy day
Love most of the instrumentals, don't like the vocals.
Zeikerige country ballads. De paar meer upbeat nummers waren oke, de rest kan me echt gestolen worden.
I'm probably the opposite of the demographic for this album, but this fucking slaps. I love all the sampling and the relentlessness of it all. There's so much anger, but it feels like it's directed into action instead of violence. Never thought I'd like an album like this, but I love it! This is exactly why I do this challenge.
I'm glad one of the reviews said this album only has 12 songs. The link brought me to a double lp on spotify. I'm too happy this is over earlier than I thought for me to give 3 stars. I dislike his voice and the music just doesn't grab me. This project has already shown me that I can't really stand singers who can't sing and Billy Bragg is one of them.
Nice, dreamy vibes but doesn't really get boring. I like the repetitiveness (is that a word) within songs, it sucks me in and let's me vibe along.
It's not really bad, it's just so generic. I feel I could hear this band at a free festival and like it well enough with a drink in my hand but never think of it ever again.
I don't my the repetitiveness, but for some reason the music is grating on me a bit. Maybe I need to relisten when I'm in a different mood.
I heard this album before, but couldn't really get into it then. I think it's really great now! A bit weird but in a good way. Definitely needs more listens.
This is cool! Songs seemed to blur into each other a bit though, but I need to relisten when I'm more focused.
On relisten bumped this up from a 4 to a 5, this slaps.
I feel like I should love this more than I do. It's a bit too dreamy in the vocals, missing a clarity and an edge that are there on other records in this era.
Yeah this is fun! Incredibly British, very whimsical.
This tickles my brain in just the right way. Turns out I love repetitive electronic music.
Very pleasant, very unremarkable music, except for the title track, which is an absolute banger. This makes it quite hard to rate for me, but I don't think the title track makes up for the rest of the album, and we are judging these by the album, not by the hit song.
What a nice surprise! This album is great and I love her voice. Might bump it up to a 5 after a couple of listens.
I think I'd love this album if it wasn't sung by Michael Jackson. I really enjoy the disco/funky vibe, but I've always HATED his voice and all the hee's, ha's, and uhs EVERYWHERE. Why does he do this all the time, it's too much!
Pretty cool, but I'm deducting a star for the spoken bits.
This sounds so whiny... I gave up when I checked how many songs I still had to go and I was only just over halfway through. Not my thing!
Ugh I've always likes some Stones hits but never thought their albums were any good, and this one proves me right. I have no idea how they were as big as the Beatles.
Saw there was a song called Sixteen and did not necessarily like this, but let's see how old Iggy... Oh fuck noooo you're 30 bro. Don't. Just don't.
As for the rest of the album, it's not really my thing. It sounds subdued, and production is pretty messy. Maybe this was intentional but I don't love it. Reading that Bowie had a big hand in it makes sense, I don't love his stuff either.
Okay I'm at Fall in Love with Me, and was thinking about giving this album 2 stars, but him singing "You're so young and pure/and you're young at heart" just ruined it. Ew.
