i am so happy there has been a female fronted band this early on, unfortunately she is really the only part of this album i enjoyed thoroughly! the music was mediocre, lots of loops, and the solo sections and variations were not particularly captivating at all i feel like it starts off reeeally strong and then loses direction in the middle-end which is sad because i had really high hopes for this album i thought the first three tracks were excellent though! 2/5 maybe 2.5/5 definitely not suited to my taste i think 😔 but i would think it could develop on a second listen

I just think I dislike borderline edgy 80s rock. I wish they just went all in or weren't edgy at all. It just gives me a performative and artificial feeling. Also, this album gives me major Police vibes, which I already dislike. The album does end with 2 banger songs in Lovers of Today and Mystery Achievement, but that doesn't make the rest of the album better. Although I love Chrissie Hynde's unique voice, as a 'Pretenders greatest hits' kind of guy, I found it pretty irritating toward the end of the album. Perhaps its a little too high-energy, jangly, new wave for me?

I didn’t think much of the Pretenders back in the day, and I have never explored beyond FM radio staples, That seems okay after hearing this debut album. It’s a solid 1001 ABYD inclusion, though. Some obvious but not too obvious influences of the time. A few new twists that had lasting impact on artists yet to come. Appreciate Chrissie Hynde’s talent, influence, and longevity as an artist. Have to admit, though, that only about half of these songs connected with me, and my faves were generally not the radio hits.

I'm not really impressed at all? Maybe because it's "old" pop punk, but imo this isn't that good. Space Invaders is rad, but the majority of everything else is a miss for me. The soft ventures into other genres is really cool, but when the base sound isn't great, it's like adding sprinkles to bad food.

Op zich is er weinig écht mis met dit album, maar dat getuigd meer van een lak aan durf dan een overvloed aan kwaliteit. Deze band belichaamt de brug tussen punk en new wave, maar de elementen van het eerste missen de energie van het moedergenre en de aspecten van het tweede zijn lang niet zo avontuurlijk als dat van vele gewaagde new wave acts uit hetzelfde jaar. Ik zie eigenlijk niet in waarom ik dit aan zou zetten in plaats van een Talking Heads, een Elvis Costello, een Blondie of een B-52's. Sommige songs pakken wel even m'n aandacht, zoals 'Precious', 'Tattooed Love Boys' en 'Brass in Pocket', maar de algehele tendens is vrij slaapverwekkend op deze maandag. Weer een albumpje van de rand van de jaren 80. De meeste platen uit dit tijdsgewricht leveren wel een interessante luister-ervaring. Pretenders is echt een album waar je de overgang van Punk naar new wave goed kunt horen. Sommige nummers hebben een klein beetje de cringe-vibe van new wave (Brass in Pocket), maar zijn over het algemeen toch wat duisterder en ruiger dan veel van de new wave platen uit de jaren de zullen volgen. Ben met name onder de indruk van Space Invader. Het muzikale stuk heeft wat weg van Definitive Gaze van Magazine (toch niet de minste). Private Life vind ik irritant. Met name die gitaar-solo, jeetje, daar kan Guns 'n roses een puntje aan zuigen. Ik vind de stem van Chrissie Hynde eigenlijk net niet tof en boeiend genoeg om dit echt vet te vinden. En dus blijft het bij een magere voldoende. 6,5/10 Highlights Space Invader

Her singing style just does not work for me at all. She sounds like a theatre kid immigrating the lead singer of a band. Her voice isn't bad, I just don't think her style works for me. I also just can't work out what the album was going for. I really enjoyed brass in pocket and think they should have stuck to a style more like that. The more pink side of things just felt so weak, and the pop combined with it really didn't feel like it added much. Really disliked the first part of the album, the later parts were a step up. Not one I plan on revisiting ever.

Chrissie Hynde has such a great voice, low pitched, but controlled tremolo. Not sure why 'Brass in Pocket' is the big radio hit from this album.

From my (very limited) previous exposure to Pretenders I thought this was going to be nice if maybe a little boring. It wasn't. Some songs were okay but overall not a fan.
I liked Tattooed Love Boys, but the rest was forgettable. I think I only remember TLB from guitar hero anyway.

I like Chrissie Hyndes voice. I like the one or two songs I know by the Pretenders. But this just wasn't doing it for me. A little too monotonous of a sound, without the sound being super compelling.
I went back and forth on this one for a while. After the first few tracks I thought I was about to give my first 1 star rating, but it got a little bit better in the second half of the album. There were a few redeemable moments, but nothing super impressive. I don’t see myself revisiting this album.

Another album that makes me really wish I could enjoy 80s new wave... but I still can't get there. There are so many tracks that are close, but don't step over the edge. It almost feels like incomplete thoughts, or like when you need to sneeze but then you just can't. I found myself enjoying beats and themes, but then disappointed at how none of them fully develop. Incredible debut album, but it isn't for me.

Safe to say I did not enjoy my time spent listening to this. I felt like the whole time I was listening I was wanting the song to either go somewhere or end and move on to the next. Now none of the songs are objectively bad I just didn’t find myself engaging with any of the material and a lot of the songs dragged on. Shame.

Sometimes a style of music is just not for me. This is one of those cases. Even the best songs on this album I found to be just OK.

This is not my cup of tea, too synth-pop to my liking. Feels like curated punk. I grew tired of the same overall sound. I guess if you're into this type of style you'll enjoy it but I'm not sure what makes it stand out to be in this list.

The album is way too long, and for some reason it didn't really interest me all that much despite having many of the elements I'm usually drawn to. Favorite track: Mystery Achievement

I haven't gotten one of those completely bland albums that plagued my first six months of this list in a while but here's another one. "An album that mixes punk, pop, and rock" describes countless albums and this one doesn't contribute much to that massive pool of similar albums. I like the album cover for some reason though, maybe ironically.
I don't especially like the lead vocal's voice.
Much more a classic punk sound than anticipated having only heard a few singles before from them. Decent songwriting and vocals but fairly forgettable instrumentation. I'm not blown away.
Dont like the vocals. Great growling Bass Sound though. Overall Sound kinda meh. Gets better in the second half of the album. Private Life and Brass Pocket are ok. But they are different to the overall sound of the album. The rest is more punkish.... and although punk was the music of my youth, this album does not work for me. It sounds to me like... they are pretending to be punk.
I got the replacements and the pretenders confused and was incredibly disappointed. This was fine.

Hi- Brass in Pocket Sorta girl punk-pop; I'm okay with most of it, but Brass is still probably the best song on the album.
I know a lot of people love this album but for me it's jarring, unsettling and disconnecting. Just not my thing.
One great track, couple of other interesting ones, sounds like one foot in the 80s and one in a different time. Not bad, won't be listening again though

Something is off about this record and it’s hard to put my finger on exactly what. The songwriting is fine, if occasionally dodgy: just about every song seems super long, and sometimes it seems like they’re a collection of just-okay guitar riffs. Several songs are instrumental but aren’t interesting enough to justify. Not a fan of the mix: the vocals are way too high and sound disconnected, the drums are muddy and ill-defined. The middle run of this record is good - “The Wait,” “Kid,” and “Brass in Pocket” at least attempt hooks - but the beginning and end don’t do much for me.

I don't like the voice. Voices are so important to me and can quite easily become annoying when they use weird inflections and contrived strangeness. At some stages on this album I can't even recognise the language being used. The music is kind of okay.

Ganske kjedelig punk-rock greie. Super simple riff, lite (men noe) variasjon i sounden, 4/4 trommer, og alt i alt ganske lett å glemme. Sangeren var ganske distinkt, noen av sangene var bedre enn 1/10, bassen på Space Invader var ganske fet ngl, Brass in Pocket var faktisk alright, og det er sikkert noe mer her for noen. Ikke min ting.

This is trying to be like "raunchy" and have "attitude" but it's so fucking cringe. There's a very specific kind of unhygienic about them, like cigarette breath and cat hair, like wearing the same stained pants because they're your cool rocker pants (until you pop the button trying to do them up). And like, they're sloppy drunk and all over you and when you don't reciprocate they try to neg you by asking if you're gay? And they don't even have any tunes, except "Back on the Chain Gang," and that isn't even on this album.

5/20 Je n'ai vraiment pas aimé l'album Que ce soit la voix de la chanteuse, les musiques parfois vraiment horrible (et sinon, simplement pas très belles), et l'ambiance globale de l'album, rien ne m'a plu. Vraiment, j'aurais préféré ne pas connaître l'existence de cet album. Seul palmarès, le titre Space Invader, seule musique instrumentale de l'album, qui est écoutable. Sans être exceptionnelle, c'est clairement la moins pire de tous, et la seule que je pourrais réécouter (mais uniquement sous la contrainte, jamais de mon plein gré).

Really uneven, second half sounds like an entirely different album. Her wailed lyrics are unintelligible and maybe would be better in a different language? Better "pop girl rock" music here than the "punk" efforts in the first 6 tracks. Oftentimes sounds like the lyrics are completely detached from the music, like the band recorded the song in one room, then shipped it across the world to their singer, who sat on it for 12 months and then slapped some half-finished personal poetry overtop "Brass in pocket" almost stretches this to a 2, but... nah.

Not a fan of this one. I can’t stand the dramatic performative nature of 80s music at the best of times, let alone when it’s as washed up and forgettable as this. The songs are so forgettable, instrumentals are bland but my biggest issue is the singing. Every lyric is delivered with this smug swagger but is completely mumbled. The things she’s singing about don’t make any sense or you can’t make them out at all. Her singing is really unplesant Brass is Pocket is arguably the only good song but it’s floating in a pool of shit which really brings It down. This is the hundred third album I’m rating. I have no idea what this shit is. Adding to my Playlist - Space Invader, The Wait, Stop your Sobbing, Kid, Brass in Pocket, and Mystery Achievement. Not Adding to my Playlist - Precious, The Phone Call, Up the Neck, Tattooed Love Boys, Private Life, and Lovers of Today. All in all I liked 6/12 songs. Not the greatest thing in the world but it was ok.

Brass in Pocket was a really good song and that was the only good song. Wish I could say I liked it but 20+ songs later and i definitely was waiting for it to end.
This album.. And probably band gets an award for an artist and/or album that I didn't expect to hate as much as I did. I truly thought this wouldn't get any less than a 3 star. Thinking it would just be a very generic, mediocre rock album. I did not expect how much I disliked what was being presented. Especially the vocals! Her voice isn't terrible.... But it doesn't sound like it goes with the music. It's as if she's singing over different music. Her melodies are so poorly written in relation to the music. The choices she has done with her vocals is absolutely uninspiring and just bad. The guitar is far too cheesy. Not CC DeVille level of cheesy... But I'm certain every member of this band is trying to show off and not cator to the song. It comes out messy and all over the place. The bass player is the only enjoyable member. What a shocking disappointment. I'm half way through this record and am very confident that this gets what I'm rating it.

Space Invader Cuban Slide Tequila What a start with precious. Not a good start either. I like the instrumental but the lyrics are just so bad. Not a fan at all. Way too long for that quality.
Weinig werk van de Pretenders was mij bekend. Dit album is me compleet nieuw. De stem van de zangeres prikkelt mij niet. De teksten staan me niet echt aan (of eigenlijk écht niet). Verder is het instrumenteel behoorlijk goed. Eigenlijk zonde. De stem maakt of breekt het vaak, bij deze is het breekt. Toch wat enkele lichtpuntjes, instrumentaal nummer Space Invader bijvoorbeeld. Nikdy jsem o Pretenders neslyšela, nevěděla jsem, co čekat a přesto jsem byla zklamaná. Ze začátku to působilo jako rádoby punk, druhá půlka už byla pomalejší a víc vibe za mě. Ale celkově? Hrůza. Nejvíc ze všeho to zabíjely texty, ty byly naprosto otřesný, divný, občas se do erotiky přimíchala mateřská témata a už jsem se děsila, kam to ještě zaběhne. Někdy jsem byla dost znejistěna, jestli “baby” referuje k milenci, nebo skutečně k dítěti… a to je v písničce, co se jmenuje “Lovers of Today” docela problém, dle mého skromného názoru. Cenila jsem ženské vokály, ale ty texty… Melodie byly vesměs podobné, nicneříkající a neuvěřitelně nudné, prostě totální učebnicový punk přes kopírku, což je přesně to, o čem punk není. Pozdější písně už byly chytlavější, ale už to nemohlo zachránit to, co bylo spácháno na mých uších. Vracet se opravdu nebudu, je to rozhodně jedno z těch horších alb tady. Nevím, čím byla kapela přínosná a asi mě to ani nezajímá. Jedině mě napadá ženská reprezentace v punku, což je smutné… Nejlepší: Kid, Private Life (texty nic moc, ale dalo se to aspoň poslouchat) Nejhorší: Precious, Up the Neck, Tattooed Love Boys, Stop Your Sobbing, Lovers of Today (a další… prostě ne, děkuji) Verdikt: 3/10 (nic pro mě, texty příšerný, občasná vibe melodie to nezachránila)

Really not my cup of tea. Didn't even finish the album.
The sound of this album is painfully stuck in the late 70's/ early 80's and the lyrics come off as trying to be angsty and edgy.

De manier van zingen is me te gemaakt. Klinkt daardoor ook gedateerd. Elvis Costello met een baarmoeder. Ik ben er geen fan van. Het begint als een soort punk-omdat-het-moet, maar richting het einde van het album laten ze die act ook maar vallen omdat ze er zelf net zo moe van werden als ik als luisteraar. Helemaal aan het einde herontdekt ze nog dat ze als kind in een ketel met vibrato is gevallen en mogen we nog genieten van wat kattengejank. Dit was vast ooit heel cool, maar nu is het momrock voor rokende, vergane glorie, gescheiden vrouwen die hun haar nog elke vier weken (zelf) zwart verven met een potje Kruidvat huismerk haarverf en daarna in de lokale kroeg zelfingenomen kijkend slechte whisky zitten te drinken fantaserend dat ze elke man nog om hun vinger zouden kunnen winden als ze zouden willen, wat dan weer bevestigd wordt doordat stamgast gekke Henkie nog wel eens een rondje wil geven als ie zelf al de hele avond zit te tanken. Favoriete artiesten Janis Joplin, Blondie (waarvan ze 1 nummer kennen) en Kiss (2 à 3 nummers). Maar misschien vul ik nu te veel in.

Spero di non essere stato l'unico. Ma a parte la prima traccia, che mi era quasi piaciuta, ma poi anche no, il resto m'ha proprio fatto schifo.
