Tried listening, not my thing

Political jazz that just didn't grab me.

Listened on holiday in Crete. Think I can see why many would enjoy but not for me in the same way that jazz isn't. Only four songs, with each over ten minutes long, I just found myself not really listening. I think I struggle without much in the way of lyrics. Ok to listen to but I wouldn't say I enjoyed it.

A little too into the jazz improv space for me personally

Enjoyed some of it, appreciated the jazz and grooviness, not my usual go-to, so its harder to have a stronger appreciation.

They had me in the first half but while it got groovy at times, I couldn’t help but feel like there was a discordant element to it that made me feel like I was awaiting a change that never came. Like it felt like it would be building to a a rhythm switch and then just never drop or jump to it. I wanted it to be a 3 but I just wasn’t feeling anything much after the first song.

This was alright, but a bit boring and a bit too short for me to properly get into its groove.

Fun vibes and not bad by any means, but the length and repetition over only four tracks really brings this one down for me. Good for some background music, depending on the scenario.

Very long jazz fills interrupted by the same lines over and over and over. All 4 tracks feel exactly the same. Didn’t care for it.

It was interesting. Some cool parts, sometimes it felt it dragged out too long. The song at the Berlin Jazz fest was my favorite.

I had heard Teacher Don't Teach Me Nonsense before. This is a bit different, more jazz. I don't really like jazz, though. It had its moments, but it's not for me.

I've established that jazz is not entirely my thing. I can get into it but it's not something I seek out. This is my first Afrobeat album though (of which Kuti is credited as the creator of), and it's really tight. Reading up on it, this album had a huge impact, causing the Nigerian military to raid Kuti's commune and kill his mother. Researching this guy was wild, he had some... interesting beliefs, but no doubt this criticism of the government and military took some balls. Politics aside, I think this album is pretty good for not being really in my wheelhouse. The sax and trumpet work is obviously great and his lyrics hit hard. The songs are long, however, and mostly just jamming so it got a little tiresome for me, but that's jazz and the beats were nice! The highlight was definitely "Zombie," and with only 4 tracks on the album I don't think another piqued my interest like that one did. Solid influential album that, while I liked reading about it more than listening to it, gets a 2/5 from me because I probably wont revisit any of it.

Another Fela Kuti album? For a guy I never heard about before this list it seems crazy that he would appear on this list twice. Anyway, I still don't like Jazz but Fela's brand is more palatable.

I did not use a private session for this one. I could have guessed what I was getting into and thought it might be a bad choice for a Friday morning. I was correct, too frantic, world music, african rythms and jazzy, to listen to in the morning. So I listened to some other mellow music for a while and came back to this one, still didn't work for me but was better in the afternoon.

Most jazz is unpleasant to me.

Could have dropped the needle any place on this album and apart from tempo’s it would have sounded the same. Reminded me a bit of a wedding I went to last year when a sax player mingled with the dancers improvising over the music being played over the speakers. Not a bad thing at at a drunken night do but not a thing I could sit down to and listen for pleasure. 2/5 22/3/25

Interesting historically, but not my style musically

I get that Zombie is a culturally important album, and I respect Fela Kuti's influence—but this just wasn’t for me. The groove is there, sure, but the songs drag on forever with not a whole lot of variation. If you're really into Afrobeat or political protest music, this might hit harder. But for a casual listener like me, it felt more like background noise than something I’d actively want to play again.

Vibes. Direkt från början känner man ”jag har ingen aning var vi ska men jag är med till slutet”. Lagom nivå av jazz. Rimligt nog så jag förstår och hänger med, inte för konstigt för att tappa bort mig. Trodde han var alban när jag läste namnet.

Always interesting to read a bit of back story around an album and this is a wild one. The album that led to his mother being thrown from a window to her death is shocking enough, but Fela Kuti apparently marked the anniversary of this event by marrying 27 women on the same day. Either way, it's a somewhat funky afrobeat/jazz kinda fusion but I didn't really get on with it and don't see myself coming back for it.

The music is lively and fun. And I can appreciate his contributions to Afrobeat and world music. But more than half of each very long song is music, its almost half an instrumental album. And when he does sing, he has a nice voice and sings well, but it's very repetitive. Best song: Mr. Follow Follow

Was just kinda blah for me. Ok as background music but I probably wouldn't actively listen to it.

This album seems like one of the ones that made it here more for historical significance rather than musical treats for the ears. It doesn't sound bad, but it's likely not a top 100 jazz album. It is sad that the USA is going closer towards 1970s Nigeria here in 2025. Not a great time. Made even worse by the fact a musical act today has a lot less cultural significance thanks to the overwhelming amount of content and social attention spans. Overalls a decent album and a more respectable cause. Favorite track "Mr Follow Follow" Bonus tidbit: when I saw the track Mr. Follow Follow I immediately thought of Nigeria due to a car always following the Google camera vehicle on geoguessr. Wonder if that has always been a Nigerian thing. 2/5

Interesting jazz fusion but became a bit tedious

Tribal africano y jazz, fusión de obligatoriedad, en este caso, creo con dominancia netamente africana . No es lo que amo del jazz concretamente, aunque no niego sus raíces. No es mi búsqueda y confieso que es la primera vez que leo y escucho algo de Fela Kuti.

Another Fela Kuti! So far we've seen 2 Fela Kuti's but nothing from The Beatles, Elvis, or Led Zeppelin. 1001 is a long list, so let's see how it looks at the halfway point. But that seems like too many, or at least too many relative to the dearth of entries for the best-selling musicians of all time. It's fine, pleasant enough, I didn't regret playing it. It's not exactly jazz, more like fusion. It's basically just groove music, they get an idea going and just hang on it, then there's some vaguely jazz-like soloing. The lack of changes and the fact that generally only one instrument solos is in my mind what makes is not exactly jazz. Even when searching for something like this, I probably would not put this on again. Maybe this an unfair comparison, but I don't really see what the advantage of this is over e.g. Herbie Hancock or Chick Corea. I guess if you're listening to this all day maybe those other guys get boring.

This was a fun one to listen to on a Saturday morning while making pottery. I like this genre a lot but prefer some other albums of the era to this one. I can see where he influenced a lot of people. Not sure I would listen again in its entirety but would pick a song out to put on a playlist.

I can't say I'm a fan of his son, so why would I be a fan of him?

I respect the background of this album, but it is just not my kind of music.

I would rate the album itself between 2 and 3 stars. Although especially in this case I have a hard time separating the artist from the record. I have to appreciate his courage criticizing the government and the consequences he had to face. But his views on women etc. destroy his otherwise praiseworthy ambitions.

Fela Kuti kind of reminds me of an African Curtis Mayfield. The music was good, particularly the title track, but to be honest it fell into the background for me after a while. I don’t think I was in the right mindset for this genre today. I have respect for it but this was a one time listen.

The cultural significance of this is lost on me, so all I have to go on is the music, and that does nothing for me, I'm afraid. But it's far from the worst I've heard on this journey!

Zombie starts well, a ton of energy and a bright, colourful sound over the top of some deep and politically charged lyrics. Would be an easy 3 if it carried on thar way throughout but it quickly drags, songs going on for far too long without doing enough to keep my attention. Drops it to a 2, disappointing because the first song was strong.

I liked the music a lot, but I felt the vocals were unnecessary. I also realized at the third song that they were all structured the same

This is the 3rd album from Fela Kuti/son Femi I've gotten in a pretty short run of albums. The afrobeat genre is fine, but it kind of all sounds the same to me. This is one of those albums that is fine to listen to, but is really only included in the 1001 albums list due to historical and cultural significance. All these years later, that is lost on me. Based on the music alone, I don't mind listening to this, but it is not something I would come back to.

Judging based on the music itself, I was mildly entertained and then bored for each song. Ive heard zombie a million times, but the rest of the tracks were also decent. Broadly speaking, fela kutis story is wild and earns my respect.

i’m not sure who this music is for, but it isn’t me. It’s unobjectionable but doesn’t do anything for me. This one felt like one I need more background info on to understand if there’s some cultural significance or novel musical approach here that I’m unaware of. Otherwise just kinda meandering and repetitive without doing anything beautiful or impressive or catchy.

I rarely ever read the wikipedia pages which I do realize I should see more ofc but I do it mostly to try to not he bias with my opinion however reading this one showed me how truly influential this album is and that was very important to see. Although this genre of music is something I really just don’t like all that much, the album being so influential really helps how I feel about it because now I know why it’s on the list.

For me… meh. Lots of horns and repetitive beats. I bet this would be great live, as it was more of a stream of consciousness.

I am wavering between a 3 and a 2, but enjoyed this less than most of the 3s so far. I like the 70s sound but found that the long tracks became a bit repetitive.

Funky! But too much for a whole album. I could only do a song at a time in future.

I didn't hate it, but it was far too long could have got the same message across in half the time if they wanted to.

Not my preferred genre, so never heard of this artist before. I didn't hate it, but would not listen again. Nearly an hour long with only 4 songs. I liked the singing part, there just wasn't very much of it. 2/5

Me - only four songs? Nice. Also me, half hour later - how am I only on song two?! Not a bad sound. There could be a time and place for this.

Lite jazz. Alla låtar har typ samma struktur. Först spelas massa solon, sedan sjunger dom lite, sedan är det fler solon, sedan kanske dom sjunger lite mer. Allt detta händer ovanpå en musikalisk grund som inte riktigt ändrar sig genom låten. Säkert jättekul om man typ äter på nån restaurang eller nåt, men det kan bli lite tråkigt om man lyssnar för noga. Mr. follow follow var väl bäst, men alla låtar var typ samma sak.

Interesting. Pretty relaxing. Not for me, I dislike the singing. Also very long.

The first non-Eurocentric album on this listen through. Really enjoying the vibes. I wish there was a little more evolution in the songs, but I'm pretty sure that's a style thing, a back beat with lots of solos throughout. That does mean it makes excellent background music for me.

Just not my genre

Relevant, but not easily digestible this is the music of a revolution and the soundtrack to change in west Africa. A mix of Afro-beat and Jazz that as anthemic as it is intricate.

While I recognize the cultural impact, this album had, and the musician ship included, I simply did not connect with the genre

While the lyrics are quite tame now, when this came out it ruffled a lot of feathers with the government. Musically I thought it was good but not great. Often long-winded.

Well…

The first two tracks were quite nice. Pretty upbeat and interesting instrumentation, but I was absolutely done after 20 minutes. It got more of a slog as it went on. The third and fourth tracks I didn't like at all.

Never been a fan of jazz, but always give it a try if I have the chance. This album didn't manage to change my opinion about it. Just feel empty and nothing else while listening to it. They do know their instruments though and their vocals don't sound any bad. /2

p370. 1976. 2 stars African jazz-funk background music. Pleasant enough, but outstays its welcome. Probably best enjoyed outdoors at a music festival on a sunny day when smoking a quality spliff. Unfortunately you rarely any of those in Stoke. Unlikely to listen to this again.

Absolutely love the percussion beats throughout this album. The fusion of genres are interesting and add a nice dynamic. Where this album loses me is with the horns. They're used to great effect when accenting the lyrics or to convey emotions, however every song begins with a 6-8 minute build driven by the horns without introducing any ideas or emotionally resonating. As such, I found myself struggling to continue, despite knowing I would enjoy each track by the 9 minute mark.

The music was just there and at points it got a little long. The music itself is difficult to describe. It has a lot of horns. I didn't get into this album. I won't be revisiting it. I will round up.

Being disconnected from the political situation that inspired the album and not having the technical knowledge to judge the instruments' execution, the album feels repetitive at times to me.

Honestly listened to the first song and decided the rest could go unheard. Not that it was bad, just did not have the attention span to listen to it.

well where do i even begin, not only does this album have 4 tracks, they each last 10 minutes? and most of it is instumental, some songs should simply not be released and or put out and that is fine, then when there is acctually lyrics, they just repeat the same words over and over, no meaning or lesson at all, ummmmm

Too long for me. I agree; it's fun, it's new, and it's refreshing for this shit list. Even though it's not my jam, today I heard something that I wouldn't have been able to find on my own. THIS IS WHAT THE PURPOSE OF THIS LIST SHOULD HAVE BEEN. I know about the story behind the album and I get that it's really important, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna enjoy my time listening to this. It's too much of the same thing. I'm actually really sorry for my rating, but it has to be done.

Nice beat... aww, fuck... there's a sax... lots and lots of sax... damn, I really hate sax... wait, this track is 12 minutes long?! I don't think I'll make it... oh, a voice! Thank God - something different! Uh... tinkling zombies? OK, I think we're done here. Fortunately, I listened to the original LP version and lost only 25 minutes of my day.

The instrumentals are boring and repetitive. On the other Fela Kuti album "Live!" the vocals make it interesting, but there are few vocals here.

Really not a fan at all. Difficult to just get through the first song. 1/5 for me.

0.5/5 I sometimes listen to jazz in the background when I just want something in the background and I could see myself putting on some Fela Kuti but I couldn't listen to it by itself. Very repetitive and when they are 12-13min songs it ends up being a looooong listen. I actually didn't mind these songs, but after 4-5mins of each track I grew tired and weary.

I really thought Id like it more and I do want to get into jazz but this did not do it for me. Maybe I havent accquired the taste for this aspect yet, but for now its either a 1 or a 2.

African jazz

All very long songs. Not sure if they’re really my style. Might skip through them. Definitely not my style at all. Sure the songs are good if you’re into jazz or the instruments.

The build up of every single song takes way to long, it's just 4 minutes of the same, followed by another 4 minutes of the same...

I had an insanely visceral reaction to this song. Never heard of Fela Kuti before this and while I respect his mission, it legit felt like my throat locked up. I couldn’t breathe. Not a fan.

One was too many, but two albums by Fela, no thank you. Four 12+ minute songs that just go on and on forever. I don't appreciate jazz, don't understand it, it doesn't make me want to move or even keep listening. I'm sure they're great musicians but that noisy horn is ear splitting and just not enjoyable. I made it 2 mins into the title track before I had to pause and regroup. Then the nonsensical, flat, repetitive vocals kicked in to completely ruin my experience. If you made it to the 9 minute mark without fast forwarding you're a badass, or maybe a dumbass! "Mr. Follow Follow" had some musical moments but again, in come the vocals and the screaming backup singers. Nope. I was literally looking around for a door to walk out of. I made it halfway through "Observation..." and threw in the towel altogether. No bueno. Hard to throw one star out but it's the least I can do, literally. NOT Top 1001 worthy, not by a longshot!

I can't decide, if I'm just very tired, still reeling from QPR's 7-1 defeat at Coventry, or just not in the mood... But Fela's not my fella today. I struggled with the length of, and lack of variation in, the title track. As a result of that, and the fact that Jane had already turned off the hotel room lights, I'm skimmed tracks 2&3 before giving up entirely. I'm not shaking my booty to Kuti

On an album (?) of just two tracks it was two tracks too many. "Mister Follow Follow" hit my ears as an unwelcome noise until the vocals started, which was 7 minutes or so into the song. One star. Just 4 rambling jazz songs that really seemed to have no point. Not sure why this is so important for us to hear. Definitely don’t ever need to hear it again.

I’m sure it’s fine as far as Nigerian music goes. It’s just not my taste at all! I’m not a fan of jazz and it has that vibe. Even though it was only four songs, it was still a struggle to get through. Interesting history, though.

Hated it. Would give it zero stars if able. Long and pointless songs.

WTF, 1001 greatest albums? No stars if I could

Initially, I understood the message of the album and even started to enjoy the sound a little. But at some point, it ended up getting boring due to the long length of the tracks. For those who manage to get to the end, it's a great experience. That wasn't the case for me.
