…And Metallica for some (just not me)
Don’t really like Metallica we’ll see how this goes Blackened: guitar nice at the start then the kit shits on it justice for all: also kinda shit
It's just too much of everything. 1 extra star for the guitar solos
My research indicates that this is the first of 4 Metallic albums we'll be sent!! Even though 1001 tells me I hate every type of metal (not true - I like metal from the heyday of metal, back when these guys were still in diapers), I will try to be objective in my analysis. There are some wicked riffs, very clean and precise, especially in One and it's easy to see how teenagers from the 80s would want to make this music there own. Also I'm hearing the early roots of grunge, my second least favourite genre. The vocals are a downer. I've read that this LP lost the Best Hard Rock/Metal Grammy to Jethro Tull, possibly the greatest Grammy upset of all time. So I listened to "Crest of a Knave" and, though I lost interest in JT in the early 70s, preferred it to this.
Just a bit too much metal in Metallica for me I'm afraid.
I had just read a story from The Guardian entitled “World close to ‘irreversible’ climate breakdown, warn major studies” and then started my first listen of this. Right on cue Blackened put a boot on my soul and ground in the depression. The message was right on cue. Unfortunately the message was delivered in the noodly, rambly, grinding Metallica style that really turns me off. All the talent on display here is lost on me when I can’t connect to any hooks or structure. It all becomes very tedious. This was an exercise in endurance. Some guitar solos that I appreciated here and there, and even a few bits of respite with some pleasant acoustic playing, but by the end my ears were numb and I was just glad it was over.
First Metallica album…kinda boring? Not into it.
Heard it before?: just the once but that was 10+ years ago Enjoy it?: I did in some aspects, I appreciate Metallica for what they are but I just don’t feel like songs need to be long for the entire run time of a project, I don’t mind long songs but they need substance and a sort of buildup or something to blow you away which is a hard thing to when your shortest track on an album is 5 minutes long, immaculate drums and guitar as ever but just loses a lot when you have songs running for so long they sound almost looped at points? Favourite song: Track 4 - One
I like One Metallica song, but afterhalf an album I get real tired of it. Feels so forced.
Not that good
one review on Allmusic states, "the apocalyptic lyrical portrait of a society in decay"... that is really really very deep. The music really gets your heart going, and they're one of the pioneers of the sound. However, I struggle to understand the lyrics a lot of the time. But that's the intent?
DNF terrible voice
Not my type of genre, but can understand why some might like it. Rhythm was the same throughout the songs.
Yeah, maybe not my kinda thing. I appreciate the themes and complexity of the music - good stuff - but there's only so long I can allow my ears to bleed. I have heard and like some other Metallica songs, but I'm not really into this kind of thrash / heavy metal, so this album doesn't really do it for me. Stand out tracks: One, Harvester of Sorrow.
Bar a few songs, not a Metallica fan. I like my metal but they just bore me. So here we go. 1 track in, in danger of bouncing off immediately. Played to perfection, just not particularly interesting. Title track appeals to my Prog-livities, much better. Eye of Beyolder- meh. One, lovely intro. An intro as long as several Wire songs. One is one of the few Metallica songs I already like going into this and it's obviously one of the greatest metal songs of all time, Billy Corgan also obviously loves this song and Siamese Dream very reminiscent of it. So, moving on, what's after that? Lots more meh, it turns out. Was literally mind wandering then I heard the line "loss of interest, question wonder", ha. I think this is getting a 2 because I need to like more than 2 songs in an hour of music. But One deserves more than that on its own. Shame it brought it's mates. Ah, damn. Dyers Eve is good, right at the end. Still though, I like less than half the album so it's gotta stay a 2. Went back to Megadeth to remind me thrash could be fun.
One is great but the rest all sounds the same really. Gets a bit tedious over san hour.
This one had too much dugger-dun-dun, dugger-dun-dun, for my liking.
Don't bother.
Too long but enjoyed One again
Decent, didn’t really click for me at time of listening
Meh.
Metalica just ain't for me. Apart from the odd song
Heavy metal is the first style of music I fell for, and it’s the one I always come back to. It’s the reason I followed this group. I have also used the term Selloutica unironically in the past. But seriously, why are there FOUR Metallica albums featured here? That’s more than Maiden, Priest, or even fucking Sabbath (all of which were my first loves before I discovered ‘tallica). Justice, with its sterile production and boneheaded progressive elements, is no essential as far as I’m concerned. The songs are overlong and half baked at the same time. I give it points for solid riffs throughout, but meh. D
Too thrashy for my taste. I am familiar with One. Quite liked a few folky intros and melodic guitar solos, but prefer more melody, stronger riffs and less angry vocals. However, I do like James Hetfields deep gruff voice!
2.4 - decent listen, just not really my style.
Not for me because I find it rather repetitive, but I can't say I've ever really given metal a fair chance.
Despite being a big metal fan I have never managed to get into Metallica, despite my best efforts. This album only acted to strengthen my overall disdain for the band. The production on this album is truly awful. Nothing about the mix is cohesive. I tried both the original and the remaster, and both sounded horrible albeit in slightly different ways. The vocals sound okay, but everything else sounds like absolute shit and I can't believe it was ever allowed to be released in this state. The drums are way too far forward in the mix and overpower everything else, and this alone is enough to completely ruin the listening experience. The bass is pretty much non-existent despite being sorely needed to round it out. Guitar tones are mostly awful - rhythm guitars often too scooped and muddy, lead guitar too harsh and brittle, clean tones just pathetic and weak. Kirk's solos generally don't align with the songs at all, and it often feels like he wasn't even listening to the same tracks as the rest of the band while recording. Mindless guitar wanking devoid of musicality. All that aside, I did think there were some okay songs, and Hetfield's rhythm playing is solid as a great big shit-covered rock.
I wish I connected with this more, as I know I love Metallica sometimes, but it just fell short for me. It felt like a less full sound that I normally hear from them--curious as to why?
metal metal metal 2.5
So, you put me in a rough spot here. Previously, I rated Metallica's black album a 5 - and I stand by that. For the genre, there is no better band than Metallica at writing, performing, recording, producing. They are the complete package. Metal perfected. So, yeah, their best album (the black album) deserves to be on this list, and everyone should listen to it. But - I also thought that would be the only Metallica album on the list. This album is long, egregious, pretentious, etc. Unnecessary.
Some interesting stuff, but not super impressed.
Not a fan
One is a phenomenal track, as they noted later in their career they were pretty coked out during the recording process and it shows in spots. The bass is turned wayyyyy down in the mix. Not my favorite of their albums but better than most.
I find Metallica boring and uninteresting for the most part. The only part of this that surprised me in a good way was the beginning of The Frayed Ends of Sanity where the Wizard of Oz Wicked Witch theme song made an appearance. And that lasted about 5 seconds. Otherwise I could have easily lived without hearing this. 2 stars.
The mix on this album is horrible. The drums are too far out front, there is little to no bass. This is what happens when the egos of individual musicians effect the output of the entire band.
Not my metallic cup of tea DNF
the worst 80s metallica album. mix sucks and writing isn't nearly as good as the other ones
This is the first time I've listened to a complete album from Metallica. My familiarity with Metallica centers on their Black album, fights with Napster, and the Metallica documentary from 2004. Was I listening to this album to experience the music or was I just trying to get through it? I felt like I kept getting distracted by thinking about a drummer who seems like a jerk, and a bullied bass player. Kirk Hammett has some skills. Between the lyrics and the delivery, whenever I listen to Metallica I end up asking myself, "¿What character is James Hetfield playing when he's singing these tracks?" I tried to be open. I don't think Metallica is my kind of music.
I can see why people like this but it's not for me
It's Metallica...
Ho fatto molta fatica a finirlo.
Nothing notable here, face value, its a metallica album...
Track 3 was baller All the other tracks sounded like Track 1
It was an ok song, could have done with having a few more songs on the album, you know, change it up a bit
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Eye of the Beholder Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Metallica feels like canned metal. There is nothing structurally wrong here, but it doesn't hit at all. It feels soulless. It feels corporate. It feels safe. Elevator metal. Still better than the Black Album.
not my vibe. songs were to long
Ah now, it's grand...a bit silly
Probably more of a 2.5. no tracks added to the playlist but appreciate the guitar work
Note bad, not great
Turns out with the exception of "One" I dont really like Metallica.
Just too much for a Monday morning! I made it through the first three, can see why I used to have a soft spot for the later metallica (liked the black album) but the earlier stuff is just too much of the same thing (over and over and over....)
Muuten perus Metallicatuubaa. Inhokkibändien top 5:ssa.
Apparently there was a bass track on this album that they turned down. I wish it was there. I'm not a big metal fan but it did sound a bit hollow.
Ist mir etwas zu heavy. To Live is to die - hat einen schönen Anfang und Ende.
Not great
Not a great Monday morning album, but I do appreciate it.
First song way better than the rest Songs are a bit long, especially the intros Like does any song need to be almost ten minutes long? No. After a while the songs all blend into one, nothing really stands out. Bit dull Faves - Blackened Overall - just fine, songs are too long and a bit boring Rating - 2/5
I can understand why adolescents would be enthralled by this shit. What I don’t understand are those who don’t outgrow it. But it’s on brand.
I fucking hate Metallica. Canciones larguísimas que suenan igual y aburridisimas
I couldn’t get into this at all. Why were the songs so long?
Not my cup of tea.
Not music to my ears.
The time and place for this music would be never and nowhere.
Not for dancing and partying. Sit down close your eyes and listen.
1/5 just not my vibe, too loud and chaotic
The Metallica songbook is just a series of How To Play Guitar exercises for 4th graders to learn their first 5 notes, where half the quarter notes are triplets and "advanced" musicians play it double time.
Never been a fan of Metallica, there’re a few songs I recognize but never put it on my playlist or in rotation
Most overrated band ever!
There are some classic Metallica songs but can't get into this album. The heavy metal problem of no melody or rhythm bugs me
Anstrengend. Interessante Songtexte
Couldn’t finish the album, heavy metal music that brings me no joy, all the songs were far too long too
This kind of overly aggressive music is absolutely not for me.
Metal ist einfach krank. Anfangs dachte ich meine Anlage sei defekt. Aber der Schlagzeugsound ist so schrecklich.
Just really not my thing. Like, I can listen to it and recognize that there’s strong musicianship and that it’s very good for its genre. But man it’s unlistenable to me
I love Kill Em All and Master of Puppets. Even if this record didn't have such god-awful production, I still think the songs are boring compared to the previous records.
…And Justice For All The contrast to Iron Maiden is stark, whereas that had melodic and rhythmic interest, this is almost completely moribund. I’ve always read that people think Lars is a poor drummer, and this album really hammers it home. It’s not helped by the drum sound and its strange position in the mix, but it is completely without any swing, groove or personality. I suppose the lack of bass doesn’t help, but I’m not sure it would make that much difference. Thematically it is as moribund as the music. I’m not sure how many times metal bands can re-hash the same banal observations about corruption and war - they don’t have much to say in the first place, but they sure keep saying it. The artwork is rather poor too. Enter Sandman is a fantastic song, as is Master of Puppets, but this is weak in comparison, and extremely repetitive and wearisome. 1. ⚖️ Playlist submission: One, I suppose
In 6th grade, I loved this album. Now, I can’t stand listening to it. Lars did this album a huge disservice. The mixing out of the bass sounds like shit. So this is getting a ONE. Do yourself a favor and listen to a version on YouTube with the bass mixed in.
1 tími og 5 minuttir av Metallica-beat. Må jeg være fri...
More nonsense
Surpreendentemente chato. 1/5
Not a Metallica guy
The Frayed Ends of Sanity is where I was after listening to this. There was just enough interesting stuff there to pique my curiosity only for my sorrow to be harvested when it reverted back to the unceasing cycle of shouting four or five words then playing guitar.
I’ve liked the other Metallica albums on here a decent bit so am surprised how flat this one fell for me. It just felt like the bad excess elements of Prog. The songs last ages without coalescing into anything more and they add as many chords/riffs as possible for no apparent reason. Maybe I’ll grow to respect this more as I understand the bands evolution better but for now it’s just trash metal Prog which is a match made in hell for me. Rating: 1.5
Fairly unintelligible and overwhelming…did not resonate with me on any level.
Can’t do it. Got 3 1/2 songs in. Soz boys.
Really just horrid. There are definitely individual songs I like from various albums but this is just a auditorial assault. Bleh.
…and justice for all earns a score matching the number of good songs it has, one. ironically the name of the song as well.
we're done
I'm not really into heavy metal, so this album did nothing for me. I was real close to DNF-ing this album. A lot of noise, not any of it pleasing to the ears. "One" is the only track I can actually say I noticed to be different. Even the band said, these songs are too long!
This clearly isn't for me and way too long. Leaving it to those who partake, if it was less long I might have felt generous and gone for a 2 but it's too much
Don’t like metal
boring
Previously unknown. Feels try hard and unedited.
What can I write other than I think this group is a typical representation for what is termed metal rock. The drums are pulse pounding, hard, and repetitive. The guitar riffs are pretty constant. The themes are dark and centered around depression, suicide, and anger. I liked the opening, the bridge, and the end to "To Live Is To Die" and then the electric guitar cut in and the drums started pounding, and the song dropped back into the rhythms and sound I've been listening to while listening to this album.
I HATE METALLICA. Ok so now thats out of the way this record blows like the rest of them. I will say that the bookends of the tracklist have the only listenable moments. Those double time sections are decent. Then it slows down and gets all self serious. And its bad news. 10 minute songs that just drag on and on with the guys jerking themselves off about how cool and edgy they are. And dont get me wrong I like metal music but metallica is not for me. Hetfield is still one of the worst singers I can think of. Lars generally sucks. And I could care less about anything they do. Kill em all maybe but I hate the rest so much I haven't bothered going back for many many many years. I will always appreciate what they did for music as a whole but I also cant forget how shit they are
This is like the laziest Metallica tribute band's first album of new content. No interesting songs really. Also "The Frayed Ends of Sanity" is based on the Winkies' chant from The Wizard of Oz??? Highlights: "Eye of the Beholder" kinda, "To Live Is to Die" because mostly instrumental
Not a fan of metal
Just one song: one
This would go so hard if I had a little wiener and drove a lifted truck with a "We The People..." decal on the window but thought the biggest breach of my civil liberties is not being allowed to say slurs. After 90 straight measures of drop d tuned chugging on the guitar and several dragging minutes of Hetfield singing in the same half octave that he's able to achieve I had to tap out. The most interesting part of what I made it through in the album was the intro to One, but only the intro. Somehow Metallica manages to make 9 songs feel like 90 and I couldn't wait for the end. I will not listen again.
Another band I just don’t get. Any track with vocals was painful. The couple that were instrumental got this to a 1.5, but not enough to round up. This 2004 movie about them was fascinating: Metallica: Some Kind of Monster
Too dense and loud for me.
1.5 not my thing but i can appreciate it
Just can't cope with thrash/death etc.
*A loud noises album. Not easy listening
felt like screaming i mean i know it’s art but not my type.
no es mi vals
I had to break my own rule and skip every track as there’s just no room in my head for this kind of turgid silliness. Each track is just a thudding dollop of merit-free tosh. I’m actually partial to a bit of metal, especially of the prog variety (I’m really hoping Tool make an appearance on this list at some point) but this, and every other Metallica record I’ve ever endured just bursts at the seams with everything I hate and absolutely nothing whatsoever of even the vaguest appeal. I can’t give zero stars so they can have one for the fade-in at the beginning. I can’t think of any other albums that fade in although there must be some. If there was a god, it would fade right out again though.
If all these songs were at least half as long I could do a Beavis and Butthead impression and enjoy myself. But they go on and on and stop being funny, quickly.
I dont think I can fairly rate this because I do refuse to listen to this in full. Very repetitive, very “mom, look how fast I can play!”. I gave up on track 2 and went straight to One, since so many reviews praise it. This one is ok I guess
i say this from an incredibly personal experience of how this sounds in my ears; this is absolutely trash 😅 jokes aside, i didn’t enjoy a single bit of this. no, that’s a lie, there were pretty guitars in One but that got ruined by an awful chorus and trash outro. i get this is their thing and this is the genre, i just learned i didn’t enjoy it at all. not hearing any bass guitar doesn’t help either. ‘to live is to die’ has been the only bearable track for me. the melody that comes in at 4:30 reminds me of Unforgiven from the black album, love that song. but yeah, this one is okay. i enjoyed it. it saved the album from a 1. edit: oh there was one more song left! noooo!!! i thought the suffering was done. noticing metallica truly isn’t for me through this project. 1.5/5 🌕🌗
just not for me, thanks. made my workday move SO slowly
Appreciate the sentiment but did not finish as metal vocals just aren’t for me! Liked some of the music and got about half way but had no desire to finish, would’ve been a chore (perhaps not helped by being slightly anxious today lol)
No best song of the album :(
I don't enjoy this - DNF
Kinda samey, reminded me I'm not missing much by not listening to Metallica.
I remember loving this as 13 year old, but, man, it’s boring! The sound of the drums is a dead horse that doesn’t need any more beating, but really there are just no dynamics on this record - just one continuous sound. It’s possible these songs would rule re-recorded today with boutique pedals and a drummer with emotions.
Gave up
Unpleasant.
Not the biggest Metallica fan, but tried to go into this with an open mind. Wound up coming out empty handed.
Ughhhhhh, suffered through this one
The more Metallica I hear nowadays, the more confused I am about how I could like this band as a teenager. Not only are their songs really uninspired but also vastly overstay their welcome.
Would be a 1 on principle but also is garbage
it just hurts my ears so much. Maybe I can only take one metallica song per day. Also - I think I went to a Metallica concert in college. Did I? Shouldn't I remember such a noisy experience? I guess we'll never know because things weren't documented back then. This right here really highlights how I feel. I'll just take the popular songs and call it a day.
I'd rather listen to "Spy Vs. Spy: The Music of Ornette Coleman" by John Zorn, TBH. I liked the "lick my love pump" bits in "To Live Is to Die".
Uninteresting and repetitive. Probably good if you like thrash metal. But not good if you don't.
metallica is the most over rated band in the world
Should be a law against it!
Not interested in any kind of metal. I realize this is a major album and band for the genre, but I just don’t like thrash. Managed to listen to every song, albeit not all of them in their entirety, and it just doesn’t vibe with me.
This is the worst album I have come across on this list so far, and some of them have been a slog.
Just bad, not good, repetitive slop. The only good Metallica album is Kill Em' All and that's it
Enough with the bombast.
Generic Metal. Nothing to write home about.
Repetitive garbage. Wouldn't subject this dross on my worst enemy.
The music was harsh, the singing was harsh, and the whole album sounded cold and mechanical, like the soundtrack for a robot uprising.
Tedious to the point of absurdity.
I could have been listening to something that I like instead of this. Too much of this rubbish recently Please don't be more metal next.....
One-dimensional, one-directional Send this band to class 1D.
Toki taas vika on varmasti ainoastaan omissa korvissa.
Come on!
What is up with all the long, extended intros? Just get on with it already! It didn't really matter anyway, I couldn't sit through this injustice to my eardrums.
Listening to a whole hour of heavy metal at once really does my head in! My ears started twitching towards the end
And Justice for all… just is not for me.
I was unable to get too deep into this and risk migraine onset. It's not for me.
I don't think there's enough melody present on this album for my tastes.
Ooh no thanks
I really like the track 'One'. Nothing else on the album appeals to me at all
Im glad this music exists for someone but that someone is definitely not me
A common sentiment is that the album suffers because the bass track has been mixed so low as to be undetectable. I completely disagree, I think the guitar, drums and vocals need to be dropped from the mix as well so I can enjoy some piece and quiet. I am an unashamed fan of the more poppy Metallica offerings.
Tripe, as all other Metallica albums.
Power chords, lots of them. Production made the drums sound like a toy drum kit. It was like listening to Spinal Taps 1st album. I'm sure they're great live but not my bag.
Don’t like. Not gonna listen
Not a metal fan, gave a few songs a listen but did not finish.
"...And Justice for All" is one of Metallica's most acclaimed albums, for reasons I fail to understand. The guitar work is good, but overall I find the album uninteresting. The tracks don't feel different enough, the drums are tinny, and the bass is non-existent.
Not for me
I do not understand the appeal of Metallica. A very poor mans Megadeth.
I'm just not enough of an alpha male gigachad jock to tolerate music this macho
I first heard this riding home in a buddy's Camaro. It hasn't changed one bit. One was their breakout hit, wasn't it? Meathead central. If I'm going to listen to over an hour of Metallica again, it damn better well have Lou Reed on it.
Awful
I am not a Metallica fan, can't stand their guitar sound. only have the black album, and that takes cares of that.
Not for me
I tried getting into this music but I find it hard to move beyond the atrocious vocals - not so much sung as snarled in a quite repetitive and brain numbing fashion. Sorry, this would be zero stars for me...
I've moved on and find this quite tiresome as I've gotten older. Can't deny their impact though.
This is the 127th album I’m rating. I've never liked Metallica but maybe I just haven't listened to enough of their songs. Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. Not Adding to my Playlist - Blackened, ...And Justice for All, Eye of the Beholder, One, The Shortest Straw, Harvester of Sorrow, The Frayed Ends of Sanity, To Live is to Die, and Dyers Eve. All in all I liked 0/9 songs. Metallica is really really bad. I cannot believe people love this band. Some of the worst music I've ever heard in my life.
Kinda just loud metal overdriven guitars. Not my thing.
Just not really my cup of tea
Long story, but when I first started playing guitar in my mid-teens I used to think that to qualify to do so, you HAD to wear black, listen to metal and play very fast and very loud, with the goal being to nail loads of widdly widdly solos. I don't think that any more and, while I can still listen to some metal, a lot of it just hasn't aged that well for me. And Justice For All falls into the latter category, I'm afraid. It's just too one-dimensional. It hasn't it's moments, melodically, but it is all secondary to the style of music which is mostly rhythmic, aggresive and repetitive.
Nah. I've heard enough Metallica over the years to know that they aren't my cup of tea.
no no no bad no more of this stuff
Pre-listening thoughts: Bro this is album 300 😭 what the hell we just got Metallica not even a week ago! And we've gotten a ton of 80s/90s metal and heavy rock recently. I thought we were breaking the streak with Alanis Morissette and Michael Jackson but it's right back to bite me in the ass. Post/during listening thoughts: I DON'T DO METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: NO Fav tracks: i am so sick of Metallica bro. like maybe One was decent but it's the same stuff over and over and every song is over five minutes and it's infuriating Least fav tracks: ALL OF THEM!!!
i'm not listening to any more of this bullshit
im not listening to that
I like a few Metallica songs, but the general genre is not my style.
Not really a fan of Metallica. This album felt very one note.
Distortion is no substitute for musical ability.
Oh oh. Back to the miserable old blokes. Checked out after 20 seconds.
They’ve never really done it for me.
Not going for this. Don't like the vocals. These guys are boring
I listened with my wife who insisted I turned it off
All sounds exactly the same to me
Great playing. Unfortunately, it’s just noise to me.
I have my preconceived notions about some albums/bands. Metallica is in that Mt. Rushmore. I listen just as you all do anyway. I get the appeal but it is just not for me.
metallica just arent that good
Widdly, grunting Beavis and Butthead thrash metal with ever-shifting time signatures. Even at the time this tinny, audio cassette style production must have made it unlistenable, surely? It falls at the first hurdle for me. To quote their own track listing: ONE!
Doesn’t even have any of their songs that are arguably good… big fat NO from me
Hated this. Don't like metal. Nothing worth playing back in my mind.
This album reminds me why I'm not a fan of them
What a load of garbage
at late night drinking beer and listening to metallica and keep wondering how can one album sounds so awful. WHERE IS MY LOWER FREQUENCY??? this just feel so weird. I can't stand this. I mean guitar riffs are cool but where's my bass...this sounds so weird and hollow. I hate music without bass.
Can't
Endured an hour of this crap and absolutely nothing stood out. Overrated noise.
This album was shit when I first heard it, and now it’s remastered shit. Congratulations. You got big and decided to write Really Important songs. But they sucked! And you forgot to write good music to accompany your diary entries! You could have been the AC/DC of metal, man. You blew it.
Not familiar with the metal genre at all, but sounds very flat. theres some interesting stuff happening with the riffs and drums but the mix and the vocals just drown out any redeeming moments for me.
I still don't like metal
I found it annoying.
0.8 - J “alt for repeating” 1.5 - S
Toddler music
Ugh, another Metallica. See my previous review--feelings have not changed.
Wow some people like this.
Metallica still sucks.
Where is the bass?
Bollocks
ugh! Now I have a headache!
Part 1. I’m starting this review 2 songs in. I’ve never really liked Metallica. I don’t like the dudes voice, I don’t like the tone of the guitar, and I don’t really like the guitar riffs or the drum pacing. I am very singular in my metal tastes and I’ve tried a few times but Metallica has never done it for me. This album so far has not changed my preconceived notions. It’s a bias I can’t turn off because Metallica in particular has been a band I’ve built my musical tastes in direct contrast to. It’s fine I guess if you’re into them. A 9 minute song that doesn’t build that hard is wild, and if the titular song only delivers that much I’m not sure the rest of the album will sway me. Part 2. “One” is at least different. Finally some variety and melody. Still not my style but at least they finally played something besides choppy ass power chords. I skimmed the last few songs. They hardly stray from their core sound and it’s one I don’t care for. The whole thing reeks of body odor and Natty Light as far as I’m concerned.
I fucking hate Metallica. They actively suck to me, and they might be my least favorite band of all time. Every metal artist that was inspired by this band is better, and therefore there is literally no reason to ever listen to this boring, irritating, trying-to-be-dark garbage. I'm sure this isn't the only Metallica record on this list, but I wish it was. Sucks.
Not for me
Bit angry and rough, not for me
Super gay
Not my type of music Songs were way too long imo Really struggled to get through it; even though it was only an hour long. Sooooo dull... Genuinely couldn't tell the difference between a couple songs
I'm tempted to describe this as comically bad but I'm suffering a serious humour deficit after an hour of my eardrums being assaulted by this risible garbage. I get that Metallica are on the list as they have a following but this is my 4th Metallica album ffs. One album as a nod to their work is more than enough - the retards who actually like this shit know where to find more of it & the rest of us don't need to have our lives further blighted.
Settle down, James…. I honestly like most of it besides the singing.
Pointless noise.
This is rock music for 12-year-olds who think they're edgy.
There were moments, but I still don't like metal. I KNOW I've been told I'm "wrong" by metal fans, but the genre sounds like it's completely disregarded musical dynamics, only using ffff except as a "gimmick." It just sounds like a wall of unpleasant noise.
Tride to listen on 2 separate occasions Not a fan
Napster hates you Metallica
so much the same...
Mostly boring, sometimes cringey
Later Metallica is pretty good. This is unlistenable for me.
Not for me...
come on
STANDOUTS: Maybe...One? OVERALL: 1.5/5; hard metal—infamously not my thing.
I really don't like Metallica. I kinda wish I did given the reviews of people whose tastes I respect. Sadly, after And Justice for All finished, Spotify played Would? by Alice In Chains and I thought to myself "Finally."
Shut up please. It's so artless, there's no nuance, no light and shade, no nothing. It also, weirdly, doesn't even feel very heavy. I've seen some complaints about the lack of bass in the mix, and maybe that's it. It sounds like hearing it from quite far away (but not far away enough) at a festival. It's better than their self-titled album, but way worse than Master of Puppets.
Didn't like, won't listen to again. Sounds very repetitive.
Not enjoyable
Would I ever buy this record, nope. Will I ever listen to this record again, nope. Would I give this record even one star, nope. So let me sum it up, nope, nope, nope!
Fat prefer their later stuff but some nice guitar
not my kind of music
Me esperaba otra cosa. Este disco me dice bastante poco. Hubo bastantes mejores discos ese 1988: Public Enemy con It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back ,Pixies con Surfer Rosa, Daydream Nation de Sonic Youth, Lovesexy de Prince, Green de R.E.M. ,Talking Heads con Naked, el debut de Tracy Chapman, Eric B. & Rakim con Follow the Leader, Tender Prey de Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Morrissey debut con Viva Hate , I'm Your Man de Leonard Cohen, The Pogues con If I Should Fall From Grace With God, el debut de The Sugarcubes con Life's Too Good, Bug de Dinosaur Jr, Pet Shop Boys con Introspective, Vivid de Living Colour; Prefab Sprout con From Langley Park to Memphis, 69 de A.R. Kane, Run-D.M.C. con Tougher Than Leather, The House of Love de The House of Love, The Serpent's Egg de Dead Can Dance, Barbed Wire Kisses de The Jesus and Mary Chain, 101 de Depeche Mode, Bummed de los Happy Mondays, Bummed de Happy Mondays, Songhai de Ketama, Sex & Drugs & Jesus Christ de Christian Death, Birth, School, Work, Death de The Godfathers, el debut de L7, Stronger than pride de Sade, G N'R Lies de Guns and Roses, Only life de The Felies, Today de Galaxie 500, Fisherman's blues de Waterboys, 16 lovers lane de The Go-Betweens, Spirit of eden de Talk Talk, Watermark de Enya, Cocteau Twins de Blue Bell Knoll, Peepshow de Siouxsie & the Banshees, Idlewild de Everything but the Girl , Conscious Party de Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers, The First of a Million Kisses de Fairground Attraction, People de Hothouse Flowers, Straight Outta Compton de N.W.A, It Takes Two de Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock, Nothing's Shocking de Jane's Addiction, Ancient Heart de Tanita Tikaram, La pistola y el corazón de Los Lobos, Talk Is Cheap de Keith Richards, Everything de The Bangles, el Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1, Look Sharp! de Roxette, El Ritmo Mundial de Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Shaday de Ofra Haza, Straight out the Jungle de The Jungle Brothers, California de American Music Club, The Trinity Session de Cowboy Junkies, Isn't Anything de My Bloody Valentine, Pata Negra y su Blues de la frontera No digo ya cosas como Robert Palmer, Eight Wonder, Boby McFerrin, Tiffany, New Kids on the Block, Jean Michel Jarre, U2, Martika, Milli Vanilli o Womack and Womack, que tuvieron su gracia.
no
Just awful!
Didnt like it then, still don't like it
How can something that is theoretically exciting and hard be so fucking boring in actuality. I hate the drums, I hate James’s voice, I think I hate Metallica
Seemingly 8 hours long, and recorded at 64kbps. Fucking dreadful repetitive nonsense. Singer (singer-ah), awful. Drums, basic. Bass, seemingly turned down as he was new. Guitar, good at what it was, but fuck an album needs more than that.
This was not interesting at all to me. Every song started to sound the same, and I’m not gonna remember what any of it sounded like in a day or two.
I’ve never really listened to Metallica, so I let this one play while doing some work, and I came to the conclusion that they are overrated. The guitar work, which is what makes metal music, is so bland. The vocals were also very bland. For metal, this was hugely boring to me. Not a fan.
I really doubted I would be able to get all the way through this one. It's a tough listen. I don't mind some of the riffage and the drumming but the vocals are truly terrible and the guitar solos made me want to laugh out loud. Those are the high points. I felt physically ill while listening to this.
2/10 An intersection of my least favourite things: hard metal and self-serious music One of the rare times I didn’t bother finishing, first half was enough Really, really not for me. Hated this
I just don’t understand why I hate this so much and so many others love it. Maybe you either have to be a dumb adult or a middle-schooler (and so automatically dumb) so that your affection for it carries over to when you are a non-dumb adult. Or maybe it’s like cilantro and you are either born with the gene that makes this sound good to you and if you don’t have that gene then it tastes like soap. I don’t know what makes me hate this, but boy do I. It’s dumb and loud and angry and just the worst. I don’t care if it’s thrash or prog metal or heavy metal or hard rock cause all that shit sounds the same to me anyway. Hairy assholes making unpleasant sounding music for dumb people to hit each other or further sustain brain damage to. There is nothing redeeming about this to me whatsoever. Just ugly noise that makes my day worse.
DNF at the second song. This is so not for me. I recognize they are excellent musicians and for metal fans this is likely amazing. I am not a metal fan. Kbye!
blah blah noise
I just can't handle two Metallica albums in a week.
Who can enjoy this shit?
Best song: Vibes: cool anger, drama Themes: justice, sorrow
Not good. They are pretty good at their instruments but I don’t like it 2/10
Yesterday, GNR. Today this… I feel like I’m being recommended music by a 11 year old white boy who is just getting into music.
These motherfuckers have made one song their entire goddamn careers and the only times it worked were on their first song and their second song.
Geez I wish I liked metal music. I can appreciate the technical skill involved in making something to complex and specific, as well as the emotional resonance an album like this could make an angsty listener feel. However, it it just sounds like chaos to me. The muddy sound of the grunge guitar, the aggressive tones, the intense strobing & constant crash of the drums, and the raspy vocals make me want to do nothing more than turn it off and enjoy the absence of being acoustically attacked.
One is a monumental song but every other track on this boring ass album sounds near identical
Iiih
And Justice for All has a nice start and sound to the track. Drums are very prominent in the songs. Sound smaller than the big heavy metal sound Metallica had become. Lars had great drum patterns. Metallica ain’t my thing.
Come back Johnny all is forgiven. There was me venting my opinion that Johnny Rotten had no redeeming quality in my review of the Sex Pistols and then there is this abomination proving me wrong. Because however bad Johnny Rotten is as a musician at least he isn't James Hetfield. Next to James Hetfield Johnny Rotten is almost a talented musician. (almost, let's not give Johnny too much credit). Seconds into every track my ears were screaming to my brain "Please let it stop". My brain vindictive bastard that it is would then continue to subject my ears to at least two more minutes before it could itself no longer take it and skip to the next track hoping against hope it might be less shit. After "One" it finally decided to give my ears what they wanted and made it stop. So this is the second album I couldn't finish. (the first being the ghastly "Speakerboxxx", strangely I actually liked the "The Love Below" part of that strange twin solo album). According to some of the reviews for this album there are at least three more Metallica albums on this list. Great, can't wait. Have to go now, have to perform an exorcism on my amplifier and arrange some therapy for it.
Bland hair stuff.
Demasiado para mí ese día. No me gustó mucho.
Didn’t enjoy this album and I really tried listened to it twice to try and get a proper feel for it but the more I listened the more I disliked it, just not my genre.
7-minute tracks of machine gun drums, some bloke giving it twiddly diddly dee on a guitar and another one grunting is not my idea of a musical good time.
I wouldn’t mind some of this if it wasn’t for the vocal and the sheer blurgh of the second guitar. Why do the tracks have to last so long? ”The Frayed Ends of Sanity’ sums it up really.
I don't like metal sound
I thought I liked Metallica, but not this album.
Point for discussion: There is way too much metal on this list, and all of it is terrible. (Allegedly Metallica have some of the best lyrics in metal. It's a low bar.) 1.5 🌟
Awful
Too monotonous for me, the guitar/drum/bass synchronous drive overlaid by the harsh vocals was headache inducing.
I gave it a fair chance. I hoped to like it. But found it pretty monotonous
Metal ist nichts für meine Ohren(Kopfschmerzen)!
Not my style
For metal I guess this was fine. There are moments of songs like One that remind me at being over at somebody else's house in high school. But the sensation of listening to this was not good for me. I was very excited when each song ended, then I'd be excited for the next song to end, too. Some day I could introduce tiers of one stars. This might have been better than Iron Maiden? Maybe not. Either way, I look forward to not listening to them in the future.
Refused to listen.
The album a group of 14 year olds would record if you asked them to remake Spinal Tap.
Nope
super fatiguing to the ear, not a huge fan of matallica I think
Terrible album
Did not finish. Kinda interesting but not my thing.
Meh
Not my jam
Never been a metal fan.
Not my thing at all
Don't like it
Mostly metal. Big surprise. Nothing that I really liked.
Too head banging
Not for me.
Felt like a neverending guitar shredding thing. Didn't like it so much. I guess metal it's not my thang. Sorry guys
Didn’t like
