Reviews (page 12 of 12)

Africa Brasil is not better than the countless other stuff we've had of a similar ilk. 2/5.

Listen to Samba Esquemo Novo instead, this aint it fam

C'est pas mes 2 pays préférés

Bra sväng men inte mycket mer

This was really not my type of music. By the end I found it grating to the ears.

Nothing much against it, but not my cup of tea. I like some Sergio Mendez, but this wasn’t quite up to that level.

Kind of boring, found myself drifting off and not really paying attention to the music.

Ook best leuk en vrolijk voor een keer. Werkt wel goed op een feestje lijkt me, maar niet thuis.

Ook niet mijn ding.

October 11, 2021 I liked the first song but it kind of went downhill from there. OK but I didn't get very into it.

This is undoubtedly one of the better attempts to incorporate funk into Brazilian music, but that isn't saying much. It just means that it isn't outright embarrassing like Tony Tornado's output, another James Brown imitator. Actually, that's not quite fair. Jorge Ben is more taking the path of tackling American funk by way of Fela Kuti, which is to say that he's diluted and dumbed down the American funk elements before incorporating them, which probably also accounts for Africa Brasil's appearance on this list. (It also probably doesn't hurt that the opening track from Africa Brasil was included on the David Byrne anthology Beleza Tropical: Brazil Classics 1.) That Fela strategy isn't as difficult as straight imitation and allows for a more balanced fusion as well. There's another reason using Fela as a touchstone makes sense. The call and response elements so central to Fela's music are also central to the Samba-de-Roda style that came out of Bahia, which is explicitly African in origin. That's all well and good, but the unfortunately, the result is rather bland. The funk aspect is generic, and the main thing, aside from Jorge Ben's voice, that gives this music some Brazilian character is prominent use of the Cuica drum, with its characteristic talking squeak. Also, the melodies are undistinguished, even if Ben's singing is fine. All this makes for a pleasant enough, if dull listen. But when you think of of all the absolutely magical Brazilian albums they could have picked for this list, it's a real head scratcher. Well, actually not so much, if you want to be lazy and follow mainstream critical thinking, led by tastemakers like David Byrne (nothing against him). The sad thing is, as weak as Brazilan/funk fusions usually are, there are much better attempts at American funk/Brazilian music that could have been chosen, like Banda Black Rio's Maria Fumaça or Dom Salvador E Abolição's Som, Sangue E Raça. But that would require actual taste and critical thinking

Не нашла альбом, сори

Inoffensive background music. Decent stuff but won't be listening to it again.

This was different. I wasn't a huge fan, but it's good for what it is.

Not really doing much for me

Not my favorite style of Brazilian.

Cant understand but still good, Brazilian. 5/10

Taj Mahal and Xica da Silva are the only slightly memorable songs. Taj Mahal was the basis for Do Ya Think I'm Sexy by Rod Stewart.

not my thing

Funky Brasilian/Latin American beats. Not really my jam, but in the right setting this could be a cracker album. Definitely think the back half of the album is better than the front. Had to re-listen to Rod Stewart's 'Da Ya think I'm sexy' to hear the similarities in 'Taj Mahal' that would constitute a settlement. Best: Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro; África Brasil Worst: O Plebeu

The horns are ridiculous. It sounds like Donkey Kong level music. But it also has funky upstroke guitar.

first song is good. so far it’s good three songs in but it’s not something i would listen to. kinda repetitive but not too annoying. average i like the fast pace though. 2/5

Viel besser als gestern aber glücklich macht mich das nicht

Ok lads we’re up to 1000 albums. We just need one more and we’re done We got a foreign language album in there yet? Nope? You know of one? My cousin Anthony knows a guy. He’s like Mexican or Puerto Rican or some shit. Ok I think we got our book.

Bit boring

Smooth sounds but nothing standout. Won't revisit.

Not as bad as expected - decent rhythms and guitar throughout but can’t see me looking this one out again

Didn’t fully listen cuz not in the mood

Alright

nice but completely forgettable like all those brasilla ones. 2.

It was alright

Con ritmo. Bastante desconocido.

What in the world? Is Taj Mahal a cover of "If you think I'm sexy"...? It's upbeat and weird.

1st track is great, rest are a bit meh

Inte för mig riktigt!

Too much for me

Only half listened

Not sure how good this is, being unfamiliar with this type of music.

This just isn't my music taste. Took a while to get through

Blaaah, ekassa biisissä soitanta tuntu jaksavan kantaa mielenkiintoa, mutta lopputulos vahva "meh".

An interesting sound and a few diverting enough tracks but not something I'd choose to listen to again.

Kun kuvitteli itsensä Apollon afro-sundayhin, niin toimi, mut muuten ei

Zeitraubend! Nein, will ich nicht hören!

i dont know

Maybe it’s the language barrier but I did not like it

Best Song: Cavaleiro Do Cavalo Imaculado

Not for me

Didn't find

Thought I might enjoy this, but sadly not, Brazilian beats are always upbeat, but this didn’t hit any heights

The first ten tracks are the same song, Pink Floyd would be proud. The last song is the only one that sounds different. No.

Not a bad album, I didn't understand any of the lyrics but I liked the cuica sounds. It's a very Brazilian album and a fun listen. 3/10

Did not like

An album I would technically fine and be okay with, if it wasn't for an incessantly annoying squeaky flute on every song that completely ruins it.

Spotify mentions this Brazillian composer as "infusing samba with soul music" Thanks. No. Bye.

-It's a little hokey when you don't understand the language. it reminds me of a parody.

Pros - Just one - it has a song about Zico on it. Cons - no song about Carlos a Alberto who scored one of the best goals in history. 1/5 4/11/25

Nop. Nonononono.

Ponta de Lança Africano Taj Mahal

dont like :(

Not good.

Artiste inconnu. Trop de chant à mon gout, et accompagnement pas très intéressant. Je n'ai pas pu aller au bout. =>1/5

Fuuuuuuuck me. I’m sure there’s a market where this music is very much appreciated- but I ain’t it.

This one wasn't for me. Perhaps if I had been in a more high-energy mood...

Um....

Not for me…

Not my cup of tea. All respects.

Interesting, but not for me.

Not for me.

I'm reading all the reviews and amazed at how highly rated people are finding this.

Not to my taste at all but it had good vibes. It's just a matter of my personal taste with this one.

Not for me

Nie ten klimat

do not like it

This was the longest 40 minutes of my life. Every song sounded the same bar O Plebeu and Taj Mahal which were the only ones I slightly enjoyed. Had to listen to Robbie afterwards to calm down. It did not make me want to samba it wanted me to put on something else.

Too much bossa nova. Thank you. bye

Cannot connect if song isn't in English unfortunately

What this album taught me is that I apparently dislike the Cuica. The sound grates my ears and I can't stop focusing on it to the detriment of everything else in the songs. And so often it feels like it follows its own arbitrary rhythm regardless of what else is going on Standouts Xica da Silva África Brasil (Zumbi) "Wuuv Wuuv Wuuv Weee"/5 (1/5)

Did not listen

this is boring and garbled

I don't like it because I can't understand the lyrics, and I like to listen to songs that I can understand. I also don't like it because it lasts so long. Lastly I don't like it because I don't like the background instruments.

The only way you would like this album is if you speak Portuguese. In my opinion, I don't like this song in general, except for the beat. The only thing I like about this album is the beat. I wouldn't say I like this album. I highly recommend that you don't listen to this album.

Nope, not for me !

Not really my type of music. Couldn't finish the album

That's it. It's got the beat.

not my cup of tea

Horrible

Ennen kun kuolee on koettava kiinalainen vesikidutus. Hyvin epämiellyttåvä kokemus.. Ei somaattista hermostoa helli tuo ääniefekti... Meikäläisellä sentään lääkkeet.. Ilman lääkkeitä olisin Koira joka juoksisi lelun perään... Rakkinakin... Narisevalta lelulta pää poikki...

That was a tough one to get through

Portuguese, the devil's tongue! Cursed is that language, and damned are all creations of it. Every note was a lick of hellfire on my soul. Every screech of the monkey instrument made me scream. It's too late for me, dear reader, but you can still save yourself. Avoid Portuguese at all costs.

Apple Music does not have this album.

Not for me, samba elevator music

I don't prefer this kind of music

isso é uma merda

Lasted three songs

Why am I listening to this? It's awful. Whoever put this album on this list either needs their ears checked or is a troll. I'm not finishing this. This is terrible.

All time great

よくわかんない…圧倒的スキルで黙らせられてる感じ…つかれる…

Did not enjoy, does not help indont underrstand it

Sounds harsh but all this brasil shit just ends up sounding the same to me. Nice enough if you're by a beach but very unremarkable beyond that.

Not available in my country

jorge ben jor? more like borge bor bore !!1!1!1!1!

didn't enjoy it :/

I like the world music thing more on stuff like Remain in Light. Tried to like it but couldn’t follow along. Extra star for real drums and instruments.

Some interesting songs, some nice grooves, but overall not terribly exciting.

Too loud

One song of the repetitious everything was enough.

Narrhhh… don’t get it

Idk didnt like it

Not my cuppa tea

Brazilie en Afrika heb ik muzikaal beide weinig mee en een combinatie daarvan wordt er blijkbaar niet beter op.

Такое бездарное дерьмище, возмутительно. Оскорбительно!

Not my cup of tea.

they sing portuguese .. can't listen to it. the music sounds good i'd like it if it was in spanish or english

Sounds like Sims loading music. Pretty catchy, but mostly background songs
