Reviews (page 8 of 8)

Im unsure how to judge this album. Its a pretty good representation of 90s alt rock but nothing stands out. Most popular track is a cover, albeit a good cover at that.

A few bright points in a mediocre effort.

Pretty generic 90s alt rock album. This felt like a compilation of songs as there didn’t seem to be a cohesive element to them. There was a cover or two in here too. The singer isn’t bad and the band plays well but I just found some of the songs odd and nothing too special. But overall it’s ok. 4.9/10

Fairly tame 90s pop rock. Nothing earth shattering here. The only reason this album made the list is because of the Paul Simon cover. 2 outta 5 mics

Meh / 10 , gonna give this a 1 - the only song that got popular from this guy was a cover and it's a good cover. But meh

Reminds me a little of Counting Crows. Easy-listening, simple. Steel guitar in "Hannah & Gabi" is a nice surprise. "Kitchen" is pretty fun.

Kinda mid tbh, just really felt like an album with no unique identity. Sure there was a couple good tracks but it's quite forgettable.

not a bad album, but not really my cup of tea. i’d need to be in the mood for it to listen again.

I guess the 90s did have a certain sound, like the theme song from friends, this one with an increase of the blaring guitar sound. Alright.

I thought it was quite good, some of it was good listening but others was very samey to other 90s alt bands of this time. Not really my type of music but didn't hate it. 2.7/5

all a bit too samey for me vocals aren’t for me won’t listen again 5.3/10

basic 90s alt rock

p684. 1992. 2 stars. Average white boy garage band plays average white boy garage songs. Nothing memorable here. Why is this on the list?

Just not that good. Likable and approachable, sure, but first half is awfully samey and formulaic (simple chords + mid-tempos + rolling beats + longing, semi-ironic vocals + rinse + repeat). Second half is slightly better. The steel guitar on “Hannah and Gabi” just reminds one how little variation there is. “Drug Buddy” and “Bit Part” are best of the lot. The S&G cover is merely annoying, partially because it was well-loved by knuckleheads. This is my sweet spot and era and these guys failed to impress then, a poor-man’s Replacements at best, strike me the same way now. They didn’t exactly overwhelm contemporary competition (Buffalo Tom, Soul Asylum and Grant Lee Buffalo and, adjacently, Yo La Tengo and Dinosaur, Jr. [both of which, along with the criminally-excluded-from-this-study ‘Mats, are much, MUCH better bands]). One smiles, one taps one’s toe, but remains underwhelmed, but "bubblegrunge" was on target and maybe flattering to the LH’s. 2.5 > 2

Slow and not very catchy so far. I don't think the music is bad just not my style. Boring and bland.

kind of boring

The Lemonheads have melody writing down, but too-quickly give it up to slide on every song into acoustic guitar pop-punk jangle. Without a concept to tie it together, the record slid past without making much of an impact on me.

Same same same, like a lot of 90s alt rock it seems. But it was fine! I think my top pick is 'Rudderless'

It's a shame Evan Dando cannot sing properly. A few of the better songs can withstand his bland performance, but half of the songs are not that good and the limitations of singer and band start to annoy.

This was only ok to me. The music was pretty underwhelming and all the songs sounded exactly the same. I perked up at one song (Frank Mills), but then realized I just recognized that song from Hair.

Certes j'ai somnolé pendant l'album, mais rien n'a retenu mon attention.

Grunge hasn't aged well. I always viewed Mrs Robinson as comedy record. Didn't make it to the end of this album. I'd forgotten all about Juliana Hatfield.

First time listening to this one. I have heard of the Lemonheads, but I don't think I can name one song. None of the songs on this one are familiar to me. I think it has potential and there are a few songs that really stand out to me. The first was My Drug Buddy. The title track, It's a Shame About Ray is the next best song followed by the cover of Mrs. Robinson. Others: Bit Part, Hannah & Gabi, and Frank Mills. 2.5/5

favorite songs: It's A Shame About Ray; My Drug Buddy; Mrs Robinson.

It’s not necessarily bad but this kind of music is very lame imo

Nothing earth-shattering for me here.

With a band name like ‘The Lemonheads’ the odds of this being a good record were always going to be low. And so, it proved to be.

Pretty good. Might have to dig in another day

It was easy to have on in the background but I wasn’t that impressed 2*

Bit disappointing. Felt like it was a bit sub-Wildhearts rock. Not much too it.

It looks much better as an idea than an actual result. Basic indie rock with

Not to bad listen to most of it

Is this the group that sings the Friends song? The only halfway decent song here is the “bonus” track remake of the Simon & Garfunkel classic which, aside from its janky, driving beat, has none of the charm or musicality of the original.

Never really got the hype about this one. It's a pretty fun album but nothing really clicks for me

Mostly inoffensive.

First parts lacked intimacy... Last paets lacked enthusiasm

One of Martha's favorites! Ah-- the sparse and low-fi production of the 90s

If you took every single alternative album released in the 90s and averaged them together you would get this absolute milquetoast, forgettable LP.

Generic alt rock music. Unfortunately boring to listen to. Just "meh." 2.2/5

Only thing I remember about Lemonheads was their cover of Mrs Robinson

Early 90s cookie-cutter music. Not bad, but instantly forgettable.

Repetitive and not noteworthy.

Pretty okay ^^ Listenable. But it really is a shame about Ray.

„Rudderless“ wird immer einen besonderen Platz im Herzen inne haben, aber es war mir schon damals klar, als ich die Platte verkaufte, nachdem dieser eine Song auf eine Compilation gesichert war: das gilt nicht für den Rest dieses reichhaltigen 90‘s Indie-Rock-Opus. 1.9

The only good song was the Mrs. Robinson cover, 2.

very 90s, rather boring

It's a shame...this isn't better. Soulless slacker pop grunge. It's not bad...it's just not all that good.

90s power chord rock. A few fun tracks that kind of went in one ear and out the other. Overall pretty uninspiring.

Just kinda mediocre music. I'm not sure what this inspired or how it's an important album, so I'm not sure why it's on this list. Favorite track: Mrs. Robinson

Okay, nothing special. Best song is a cover.

Meh. Pretty generic and uninteresting. Some neat songs, but overall not a fun time.

I mean yeah it’s okay, but there’s no subtlety or dynamics to the songs and, as KC said, they might as well be the Gin Blossoms or the Goo Goo Dolls.

Never heard the whole album when it came out. Knew the Mrs. Robinson cover and title track were good. First few songs were pretty good. Then it got boring. Meh.

Not my favourite. Liked more the demos.

More whiny, sad American 90s shite.

Not much redeeming about this album it's rather boring to listen to. I find the mixing a bit off with the guitar tracks and vocals. Lyrics didn't grab me much. Might just be my taste and it's not so bad I couldn't finish it which is why it's not one star.

Absolutely loving Rudderless. I liked most of the album, Rudderless is probably the only one I would listen to again though

Not my thing.

It's good 90's alt rock.

well that was incredibly samey. one track repeated loads of times until they hit us with their money maker.

not my vibe

I like their 90's grunge pop sound, but most of the tracks are a bit samey.

Good music, liked it all but nothing stood out as excellent. Will maybe listen to their 2019 album as I want to see where they took their sound.

Would probably fit in a 90s teen coming of age film but outside of that it didn't interest me much.

Nice enough but none of the songs really grabbed me at all. All just a bit backgroundy.

Mielenosoituksellinen kakkonen!

This album has not agreed well. Some decent tracks, but mostly boring.

Demo Versionen raus aus allem. So. Album is absolute Scrubs Musik. Was eigentlich cool ist.

I should like Lemonheads just based on my other musical tastes, but I just don’t. I find his voice completely bland and boring, the music and production are muddled and nothing stands out. I think he’s a decent songwriter but those other factors make this a 2 star album for me.

Title track I remember. Decent track. Otherwise pretty forgettable 90s music.

Wasn't a fan, Mrs. Robinson cover is good though

I hate saying "eh," but.... eh.

Alright, but nothing special.

Hittibiisiä laskematta ei sytyttänyt kummemmin.

Not exactly the type of sound I'd find myself listening to. The vocals are like soap? in a way to me. Not super appealing, but I can see why some might like it.

Pyöri siivoamisen taustalla, Mrs. Robonson-cover jäi ainoana mieleen. Pitäis varmaan kuunnella uudestaan ajatuksella?

Nostalgic production, but overall not my personal cup of tea.

Not my taste . I adore though it’s a shame about Ray..

I hate everything about this kind of listless/demonstratively careless sounding adolescent music. The sound, the vocals, everything. Lump it in with Dinosaur Jr, Pavement and Suede. Except I'm being too harsh on Suede here, as they at least have the occasional killer hook/riff. Something this is absolutely devoid of.

Not my taste

This is absolute shite. I have a deep sympathy for any woman stuck in a relationship with an American man who genuinely listens to this.

Punk. Music all the same.

alternative rock, dont like it why its in this list? maybe the cover of mrs robinson was popular

Was alternative rock a mistake? Did it unleash something upon the world that could never be undone? Whose to blame for Adam Duritz besides the wave of soft toned, slack mouthed hordes of alt rockers blending genres that should have, for all intents and purposes, been left separate? I can't say. I don't know if anyone can. But this album summons vitriol from my soul and I have little but condemnation for it.

Man, the opening guitar chords on this one gave me some hope that I’d enjoy this one. Then the vocals started. Listen, I get that the early nineties was a wild time for alt-rock and grunge but this vocalist should not have been signed to a record deal. His style is so outrageously boring and monotonous. He sounds like the act of recording vocal tracks in the studio is the most boring things he’s ever done, and he just wants to get it over with. There’s nothing there to make this enjoyable. Instrumentally it’s just the same boring kinda distorted guitars, root note bass lines, and boring drumming. I am genuinely baffled that this ended up on the list.

God this album suuuuuuuucks. It took until 14 tracks deep to get to a song that I didn’t actively want to turn off, an under-two minute B-side (“Shaky Ground”) that was apparently bonus material. All of the actual original track listing of the album is grating 90s indie rock slop. Awful, awful.

I’d don’t enjoy this feeling of the 90s.

Stor 1er

25. its spot on the list is questionable

Heavy, but too monotone!

I felt so little listening to this that it was almost zen.

Meh rock

Haven't heard of them before. Literally the most pointless lacklustre nothingburger 90s alternative music. What is this doing on the list 1/5

Seriously? No one NEEDED to hear this in 1992 when it came out let alone pretend like its got something that makes it a legacy album that should be passed over as a must listen. 1 star is being generous, lets go with 0.38.

Honestly this is bland as milk toast why is this in the list?

++: Mrs. Robinson +-: Rockin Stroll, Confetti, It's a Shame About Ray, My Drug Buddy, The Turnpike Down, Bit Part, Hannah & Gabi, Kitchen, Ceiling Fan in My Spoon -: Rudderless, Alison's Starting to Happen --: Frank Mills 2,8/10

Really not for me. Lifeless in my ears.

This album is so boring. The lyrics are bad and the singing is awful. Nothing exciting going on with the instruments. What is it doing on this list?

it's giving smashmouth too much jangle

Not for me. 1/5

1 star. Just wasn't interested with the voice as soon as I heard it

I do not like the song It's a Shame about Ray. It's lazy sounding in the worst way possible. And those little harmonizing vocals in the last chorus are not great to my ears. The song Rudderless, there's a discordant thing happening in the verses and I don't think it's working. I literally can't listen to this song. I kinda hate it. Ok, I'm maxed on this. I can't force myself through this. It's really not for me. I knew the cover Mrs. Robinson and that's pretty great but that's about the only thing working for me. Maybe the first two songs weren't bad either. 2 stars and that's a generous 2 stars.

All I hear is blaaablaaBLAAAA YEAA *guitar* blaablablaBLAAAAA *guitar* YEAAAA. Good things is that each song is about 2mins long.

This album sounds unfinished and not in a good way. It's like a demo reel got pushed to production without anyone picking the best songs, or polishing them, or arranging them in an order that makes sense. Most of them are indistinguishable from each other. The cover of Mrs. Robinson is not good and sounds exactly like every other song on this album which makes me wonder if they just threw darts at the wall and said whatever, we'll do this one. I wanted to like it because it reminded me of a very specific type of mid to late 90s band I enjoy, but it wasn't nearly as good. Ended up making me frustrated instead.

Not for me

Listen, there’s nothing wrong with this album, unlike some other bottom feeders of my rankings. But god damn it is unforgivably boring to me.

point6.

Nä, tråkig tonårsgnäll

Shameful shit poop

1. ztroll - 1 2. confetti - 0 3. ray - 1 4. rudder - 0 5. drug - 1 6. turnpike - 0 7. bit - 0 8. allizon - 0 9. hannah - 1 10. kitchen - 1 11. ceiling - 1 12. millz - 1 13. robinzon - 1 14. zhakey - 1.5

I like the title track to this album and the Mrs. Robinson cover. That’s basically it. There wasn’t much else that I could get into. And, I read the Simon & Garfunkel cover wasn’t even on the initial release so points lost there too. Maybe I’m being too harsh but I really didn’t care for this album. I’m giving it a 1. 1/5

Must hear ???? The only song that made some impression was a cover and not even a good one

Replacement level 90s pop radio alt rock - nice jangle, strummy, some twang, it's very bright, melodic and earnest, but extremely paint by numbers. I like this genre a lot, but really hard to call this essential listening as an album - maybe a song on a best of the rest 90s comp.

It's a shame about this album Lemon is synonymous with dud, and that's what this is, one lemon out of five 🍋

nope. thumbs all the way down.

Meh. Could be any early 90s middle of the road band

One long song?

Meh. Such an unremarkable and dull album. It’s the most vanilla rock that doesn’t generate any emotion in me whatsoever.

It's a shame I had to listen to this.

Might be the most boring thing I've listened to so far.

I didn't know who they were. I thought. I absolutely hate the 2 most famous covers of Simon And Garfunkel songs and this makes me want to give a bad score to this album.

It's a shame that this band/albun was included at expense of much more deserving artists. They had one song. It was a cover.

This feels like a subgenre of 90s alt rock that I can't stand. Acoustic guitar-led sort of cloudy vocals. Toad the wet sprocket. Lemonheads. All them things. They all had a hit, and those are fine, but an entire album of them is distasteful.

It’s a shame this album is on the list.

Dreadful

Eh boring

Really didn't like this album, didn't feel anything while I listened. Nothing new or interesting here, the best song was the Mrs. Robinson cover (not included on the original release), and even that did not provide anything new.

Truthfully I skipped through these songs and nothing in there made me think that this album elevated the band above a one hit wonder. Maybe emblematic of the music of that time, but there were probably way more albums that year that had a bigger cultural impact.

There is certainly a feel of an American bias in this list, I bet some corkers have missed the cut in place of shite like this

1.5 Every song sounds the same. Their biggest hit is a cover, says it all…

Not my kind of alternative rock. Each song sounds the same.

I would give it a zero but that’s not an option

Saved for later

Ahhh no era la misma canción catorce veces??

This was very 90s teen movie, i think the standout song being a cover says it all. Not my taste

90s teen movie stoner music.

VÄHÄN TÄRKEEMPI... rockin stroll

a lil too soft for me

I really didn't like this one, kinda generic

NBz. No PL adds. Drab and dull. Album felt like listening to one entire song. Not for me.

It's a shame this album is so shit

I was quite looking forward to playing that I knew of the Lemonheads but had never listened to an entire album theirs before. Every day’s a school day and all that. However, I didn’t really find anything in this to latch on to. I’m not even sure how I would describe it if someone asked me. “mature 90s alt rock” maybe? Feels very much of its time and place, but it didn’t grab me in the way I had hoped.

Boring

Finding this rather exhausting. This is what Wilco would sound like if Wilco sucked. Thought Mrs. Robinson might make me like them more but that one annoyed me too.

Very boring

Whatever, man. 1001 albums you must hear before you sleep Saved: It's a Shame About Ray*, Mrs. Robinson

One hit don't make a classic album

The punk undertones are heavy, but it is eclipsed by the mediocre sad/whiny 90s tone. Absolutely nothing of interest lyrically, and the 2 is only coming from the instrumentation being above average. That Mrs. Robinson cover is a nail in the coffin for this album. Christ almighty.

Absolutely nothing memorable or interesting?

Was kind of bland compared to its contemporaries. Maybe I need another listen but...

Made it through 3 or 4 songs and stopped cuz I wasn't enjoying

0 stars if i could

1992: Mrs. Robinson
