Reviews (page 4 of 14)

The masters at work. Proof that a million notes per second isn't necessary. The most relaxing and beautiful music you will ever hear. What's incredible also is the names that play here, besides Miles. Coltrane, Cannonball, Evans, come on. It's considered to be one of the greatest jazz albums of all time for a reason. 5/5

Thoughts before listening: One of the few jazz records I've ever owned, and it seems thats pretty common. Also contains one of the most recognizable hooks in all of jazz with "So What". Its been a while since I have listened to this, but I am sure it holds up and will merit 5-stars. Review: Yep, definitely holds up. This album is one of the most well known jazz albums for a reason. Strong playing throughout from some of the all-time greats of the genre, and songs that have stood the test of time. I used to have a poster of this album on my wall in college. Now I was a complete poser, but it speaks to this album's reach that I was even able to purchase a Kind of Blue poster at the University of Tennessee in 1999. Best songs are "So What", "Freddie Freeloader", and "All Blues". 5-stars

A standard at this point. Miles Davis is one of one.

Really enjoyed this one, didn't want it to end.

Beautiful.

Fantastic album, listened multiple times

Perfect!

Timeless. The product of collective genius. Imagine being in the room, hearing those first takes with Coltrane, Evans and Cannonball???

brī niš ķī gi der jebkurai atmosfērai

Not my usual genre but greatness is greatness and there's a reason why they call this the best jazz album ever.

Can’t beat Miles Davis

tremendo

Perfect album. Perfectly performed and recorded. You feel like you’re in the room. Tempos and keys and feel varies constantly. 1959 was an amazing year. This record is one that any citizen should be required to know.

First jazz album I’ve ever listened to, found it nice. Would be easy to put on in the background.

A fantastic album, with immensely clear instrumentation where it is easy to pick out individual parts. To boot, it is an amazing album to relax to, or to make anything you are doing feel way fancier than it probably is. The only problem that anyone might have with it is if you aren't into instrumentals, as there is not a single word on the album. However, for someone like myself where instrumentals are toward the top of my list, it fits right at home.

This is a treasure!

O maior classico do jazz por uma razão

Like a lot of people, I imagine, this album was my way in to jazz. It's melodic and approachable enough to not scare you off but it also has enough exploratory sections to at least hint at the wilder directions you can take backwards into bebop and much wilder onwards into free jazz and Miles' kick start of fusion.

Ya like Jazz?

This album as a whole is really important to me. There were two albums that my high school band director always talked about, Kind of Blue and Birth of the Cool, both by Davis. He's moving to Illinois to take a job as the band director of a whole district this year, and I'm gonna miss him. He's the entire reason I've ever heard of this guy, and he's the sole reason I decided to major in Music Education instead of Law when I was really stuck between the two. He really created a home outside of home for not just me, but hundreds of people during his 19 years at my school. To you directly, Mr. Howell, even if you don't read this, I hope to be just like you in a decade. "The world is full of ignorant people, don't be one of them." -Page Howell, 2021.

If I walk into a record store and see this album, I’m buying it even if I’ve never heard the adulation surrounding it based solely on the heavy-hitter, all-star lineup: Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley on the horns, Everybody Digs Bill Evans on the keys, Paul Chambers on bass. Despite that collection of virtuoso talent (and egos, probably), the group displays incredible restraint and discipline. It’s as smooth as a placid summer lake, uncluttered and full of space. “All Blues” rides a mischievous, simple shuffle to a remarkably quiet, contemplative end. What a composition. The whole album feels like a long tone poem. Fantastic.

What can I say about this record? It's like being asked to rate the Sistine Chapel. "You gotta check out that ceiling!" I can confess here that I'm a jazz dilettante; bebop, hard bop, soul jazz are my bread and butter. This record is more complex than those sounds usually are, but it doesn't lose me the way that more radical jazz styles often do, flinging me off like an overclocked carousel. Instead I can enjoy this ride and its subtle thrills.

If you have fewer than 10 jazz records (like I do), this should be one of them. Not an unpleasant listen, and a great example of this artist/style.

I hear trumpet jam I 5*

❤️

Super good front to back 4.8

If you want to get into jazz, this is the way.

Bluish

Legendary. One of the most recognizable jazz records of all time for good reason. Incredible talent and skill all over this one. A masterclass of musicianship, each solo flows seamlessly into the next. Once you get on this train it's almost impossible to turn it off.

What a beautiful beautiful album. I didn't discover anything new to me today but it was a real pleasure to listen and focus on this again. Side 1 swings surprisingly hard for such slow changes. It's amazing to hear Coltrane and Evans leaving so much space. There is so much listening going on! Then side two is just so poetic and beautiful (or I guess the modal ballads at the end of each side.) It really does sound like they are feeling as one and just putting that feeling directly into improvised music together

disco de entrada al jazz para cualquiera top total

Super Dope

Classic jazz album. Already very familiar with this one and perfect for pretty much any situation.

One of the greatest pieces of music ever created: written, performed, and produced. This is music that instantly changes or enhances my mood. It's relaxing, sexy, introspective, and always cool. Just like Miles.

Iconic.

Man I love this jazz crap 🚬

yeah i mean the goat's goat album ... just goat of all time shit

So smooth and relaxing

A timeless classic ❤️

A jazz album is good when the songs capture you. It’s iconic when you literally know the songs already without having knowingly listened to it before

Like hearing Mozart, if you could hear the actual breath of Mozart on the recording of the music.

I painfully recall a friend of a friend remarking that this was 'elevator music.' If so, it's an elevator I'd happily live the rest of my life in. Modal, it's also a model and a middle ground. Never too cool for school, it's yet cooler than you are, and more snappily happening. I've now heard it n+1 times: better—vivider—each.

Classic

Un des meilleurs album jazz de l'histoire. Je préfère la période fusion de Miles, notamment Bitches Brew et In a Silent Way, mais ça demeure un chef d'œuvre absolu.

This album gives the vibes of someone at a cocktail party, surrounded by dignitaries and socialites. He drums up a conversation with a railroad tycoon who asks what this young man has 'in the works'. After fudging his way through conversation using terms like 'amortization', 'EBITDA' and 'capital gains', he heads to the bar and orders a Manhattan cocktail. He politely sips his drink in solitude , internally pondering where Vermouth actually gets its unique flavour from, while surveying the room. He can't shake the feeling that at this particular point in time, he has made it. The sun sets behind the mountain range across the lake from the elevated condo which hosts the party. The man goes outside for a menthol cigarette and looks up at the sky, just in time to see a glimmer of a far off shooting star. Could it get better than this? Unlikely.

Takes you back to player the greatest games of all time: Sim City 2000 and Sim City 3000. What more could you ask for.

Some jazz is deeply complex and requires your undivided attention to listen to. Others create a beautiful soundscape that whisks you away and carries you gently down a stream. Kind of Blue is, in my opinion, the best album of all time in that second category. And best of all, it does that without being simple, it's layered and technically proficient and beautiful. Thank you Miles Davis from Jazz.

The essence of COOL. Miles Davis made the switch from chord-based jazz to modal jazz seemingly effortlessly, maintaining an effective cool atmosphere the whole way, resulting in one of the finest jazz albums out there. Another win from Miles!

After first experiencing In A Silent Way, this is obviously a little different of an experience, and I didn’t get it upon first listen. But then… it clicked upon second listen and I realized I could just listen forever and not get bored. Fantastic jazz album.

The one and only. The classic. The blue-tinted masterpiece. Moody atmospheres. Motherfucking John Coltrane? Can't get any classier. Bravo Mr. Davis!

Isso é fantástico. Mas para mim só funciona ouvir num momento de descontração geral.

I know this one backwards, forwards, and inside out. One of the best of all time.

masterpiece. adderley's solo in flamenco sketches always gets me

Day 2 First listen- Flawless album! So so smooth and gorgeous. The entire album is a highlight! I had not listened to it in full before only two tracks but I am so glad I did now. Truly wonderful! (5/5)

VTUBER NOIR [interior: smoky bar] detective: I had just gotten off a 6-hour donothon and was ready to relax. When all of a sudden SHE walked in... a Live2D dame with legs that ran right off the screen, and the kind of eyes that make you Cheer100.

9/10 damn bitch who hurt you

One of his best releases, if not the best. The ensemble is great, every member a master in his own right. It doesn't get much better than this.

It’s not my favorite jazz record (sacrilegious I know) but you can’t argue that this isn’t perfect. The personnel is insane and the album is just revolutionary.

There's not much you can say about this album that hasn't been said. Generational, transformative, everlasting... Clean 5/5.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. I mean it’s the number one jazz album of all time for a reason. Miles Davis with an additional quintet featuring Coltrane?! No brainer. Has stood and will stand the test of time.

This was on the one hand, quite compelling. On the other, I don't think it's something I will seek out again. Hard to say

Walking in Avignon (South of France) with this album with a cool breeze and sunny sky : PEAK ! 9/10 Miles is a master. fav songs : Blue in Green & Flamenco Sketches.

Seems like these guys really know what they're doing. I should listen to more Jazz, I put this on and focused on work better than if I had 2 cups of coffee.

Own it listened many times. Love it

One of the best and most influential albums in history.

This project should really be called Kind of Blue and 1,000 other albums you might want to listen to.

its prob another 5/5 for the reg markers. when it comes to jazz, this is THE name on THE album. moving a scene to a new era so far and ahead of the game its insane to think about. it can't be said enough how long lasting this record has been. i love jazz, and for sure John Coltrane, Bill Evans, and him together is crazy. the atmosphere in every single note is phenomenal. its hard to say anything that hasn't been stated in the past. I'm no jazz head but this must be over 20 albums deep for Davis in an almost decade long career in the game, and all the experience and talent has built up and formed in this masterpiece in 1959. it all flows together and intertwines beautifully. the energy here is fantastic, what a year to be alive in the USA, GOD BLESS o7. truly from a time where you didn't dwell on single tracks and vocals, but an entire symphony coming together that seems to have no pause or empty space. all the players at this time were masters of their respective craft. the tone and temperature of the country is still beating like a heart in these songs. there may not be any one artist that defines this time better than Miles. again, if you said, "i know nothing about jazz, where should i start?" the answer will almost always include this record. the legacy edition with diff versions is a certifiable text book template for how the process behind these decisions and how subtle changes can shift the whole direction of a piece. contemplative moods, visiting older family members, even just at Christmas, walking around a city--there are so many places this music can play. All Blues is my favorite. its hard to go into detail more than that. SOOO BECUZ OF THAT///////i will stick my Solomon Burke review here////////// So this right away give me Otis Redding vibes, and again its Warren Zevon, Van Morrison, and then Otis Redding on a very personal level best of all time. this is a gem for 63, nice and easy but still intense soul. Cry for Me and Goodbye Baby are great. i have heard of him, but not familiar with his music. it speaks to that 60s live music scene rising up and giving a second life to these albums after wax; the performer/performance over the composition. 3/5 for a solid record.

Doesn't get any better than this.

Love this album. Classic top jazz album with some of the best to ever do it together.

fucking LOVED this album. every song was like a timeless hug. wow, listened with my nanny kids and they loved it too. i liked being able to pop on an album and it appeal to me and them and also would work listening with my grandma? duality. wow.

5 Improvisation at its height. Execution is everything to Miles and his group. An absolute mind-blower. Every facet of this recording from mic placement to chosen solos to design is to be studied. However, don't study the music. Just let it flow from the speakers and revel in feeling like you are placed between the instruments as Miles's music overwhelms you.

Such a vibe and what an amazing mix of musicians!

Miles Davis was truly above this world. A phenomenal album that strikes to the core. The closer especially. A great soundtrack for walking alone at three in the morning lost in your thoughts. Timeless masterpiece undoubtedly.

Can’t go wrong with miles

Classic Miles Davis + Coltrane

A masterpiece. A classic. An album I truly love, and one I’m proud to own on vinyl. Kind of Blue is the essence of calm, elegance, and depth in music. It’s jazz at its most relaxed, yet also at its most intense. Every single note feels intentional, and the airy interplay between Miles, Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, and Bill Evans radiates emotion and restraint. Tracks like “So What” and “Blue in Green” hit me every time – both musically and emotionally. This isn’t just a jazz album, it’s a piece of music history. A timeless experience I keep returning to again and again. 5/5

I can listen to this album anytime, anywhere.

I listen to this often. My favorite Jazz album.

Good music very calming

Ne znam postoji li najvažniji jazz album svih vremena ali ako postoji onda je to ovaj

I might not have appreciated this as much a few years ago, but since my son has taken up jazz band, I enjoyed this a lot more than expected. The playing on here is impeccable and in true jazz form, everyone gets to have their time in the sun. This was a great album to listen to with headphones, where you could better hear the nuances of some of the playing. It’s not just about the notes played, it’s the mood that is set, and the way they can go solo or blend together. It all sounds perfect. Love me some stand up bass. The saxes were amazing on this. The underlying drums and the off beat stuff was very interesting. And Miles Davis is a truly great player. So What was my favorite of this excellent album.

Amazing. Another album where you actually feel the atmosphere of the performance.

I love Miles Davis and this album has some of his well known songs.

I don't even need to listen to this to give this a 10/10. This is my shit.

Favorite Track: So What

Perfect.

I can see why this is such a celebrated jazz album, not only from the star studded cast but also the easily accessible music which has no crazy changes to its structure but instead flows together so well, sounding like fully planned, meticulously crafted sessions rather than a spontaneous idea. There’s no weak elements to this album, every instrument has its moments to shine and you don’t even notice the length of the songs because they don’t feel long at all. There’s also plenty of variety between the 5 different songs with each song developing in a really nice barely noticeable way with really nice motif’s in the songs which are carried through in cool ways, like when it’s played by the sax and then changes to be played by the piano when the sax goes into a new melody. Can’t be less than a 5 even though it’s a bit of an NPC album but for good reason. Overall, 9.5/10.

It's like a walk by the river, like coming back home. Somewhere you didn't know you had left, the place where you belong. The sunset and nature surround you as you smell and smile.

Classic.

One of the greatest albums in the history of Jazz. This is a perfect album. Only someone who dislikes Jazz or who thinks Bebop is the only true Jazz could dislike this album. 5 stars.

Classic jazz album. Nuff said. 5/5. Works for any occasion in my opinion.

Kind of Blue by Miles Davis It’s the best selling jazz album of all time for a reason. The sound of the recording is incredible, the playing is so good. Not to mention it’s a groundbreaking moment in jazz and the history of Miles, Coltrane, Evans etc. if there’s any criticism of this album it’s heavy on the balladry but there’s enough ferocity and exploration from Coltranes solos to make up for that for me.

Probably the best selling jazz album of all time. Not a bad song on the whole thing. No overcomplicated solos, just a pleasant listen.

Incredible album. Favorite songs: Blue in Green, Flamenco Sketches Rating: 5/5

clássico mais que clássico. 1959 o ano que mudou o jazz.

Loved it. Nice and mellow

5/5 ultimata cool jazz-albumet

Kako je ovo vrhunski album. Mogla bih ovo preslušati milijun puta. Možda i jesam već 😂 ne mogu dati ništa manje od čiste petice za ovo glazbeno čudo 🫶🏻 5/5, 9/10

A lot of good things have been said about this album and they're all true. This is to jazz what the Dark Side of the Moon is to rock, or Mozart's Requiem to classical. The musicianship is amazing and I especially like Miles' lyrical trumpet, which does not dominate the music but lets the other instruments breathe, too. A very easy 5*.

I am by no means a jazz connoisseur, but this album always seemed to goddamn cool and accessible to me. Easy 5.

This is one of my favorite albums. Nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said.

Love this, so smooth and calm.

A classic for all the right reason. Perfect vibes.

No big deal, just a couple legends making some of the best music I have ever heard.

Geneuinely one of the most beautiful albums I have heard so far. The album carried you through a lovely journey, full of soul + emotion, each song lingering with you. I would happily listen to this over and over again!

Birth Of The Mode 1001 Albums Generator 47 (06/06/2025) I was worried the day would one day come when there were no lyrics on an album, which kind of messes up my whole titling scheme, but oh well, at least there is some jazz on this list, good to know! We are starting our jazz journey with one of the most important and influential albums in the genre. Miles Davis had been around for over a decade by the time that he released Kind Of Blue, and it came right in the middle of his first great period between 1957 and 1960. It also saw Davis playing the modal jazz style over the course of an entire album for the first time. While he had played with this new style on his 1958 track Milestones (one of my favorite Davis compositions), Kind Of Blue was a full exploration of all that the modal style of composition could be, with Davis explicitly giving each soloist a set of scales to use for each piece of music. It is impossible to overstate the influence that Kind Of Blue had on the history of jazz, with it and Coltrane's Giant Steps from the following year both being seen as marking a sort of turning point for jazz, introducing and expanding the ideas of modal jazz on top of cool jazz and hard bop respectively. Does Kind Of Blue hold up to its reputation, or is it overrated? Miles Davis is one of my favorite artists and is definitely my favorite jazz artist. While his electric era is my favorite of his, there is something so undeniable about the era around his first great quintet. The way that Miles Davis was doing cool jazz at this time was so interesting, and Kind Of Blue is the best example of this. It is by far his best cool jazz album and the best of his 50's work. One needs look no further than the opener, So What, with its catchy, simple head chord stabs and its lead bass line played by Paul Chambers. Bill Evans' chord voicings on this song are also iconic (so much so that this particular voicing is referred to as the "So What Chord"), and they harmonize with Miles' trumpet so well. Freddie Freeloader is rather underrated as far as this album goes. It is a 12 bar blues with a slight variation on the traditional 12 bar chord progression, and it features Wynton Kelly on piano instead of Bill Evans. While I do love Bill Evans (he is one of the best pianists of all time), I think the inclusion of the more blues-minded Kelly makes this song unique in the context of this album. All Blues, the longest track on the album, is another highlight. From the first moment you hear the low trill on the piano, it is clear that this song will have some great energy. It has perhaps the most catchy head on the whole album, with Davis harmonizing great with the dual saxophones in the background. While the entire album is very chill, the really slow songs here are my least favorite. Blue In Green is one of Miles' most popular songs, but I've never really understood that. I've always felt it was the weakest piece here and it brings the album down slightly. I am aware that I sound insane right now, I'm sorry. The other real slow song here is the closer Flamenco Sketches, in which Coltrane and Adderley really steal the show. The saxophone solos here are very restrained, but interesting. I particularly love the little oriental flare that Cannonball gives near the end of his solo, which Bill Evans plays with a bit during his solo. While Kind Of Blue is not avant-garde, especially compared to what Miles would do in his second great period, it undoubtably took jazz out of its formulaic comfort zone and helped to expand the sound of this genre as it headed into its golden decade. 4.5/5, rounded up to a 5 for pure influence. Favs: So What Freddie Freeloader All Blues Least Fav: Blue In Green

Ya like jazz? I do. In all seriousness this is a fantastic album. Like most great jazz albums, no standout tracks, just a great album. So easy to listen to but also just manages to sit perfectly in the background.

One of my favorite albums; probably my favorite jazz album. Used to be my LSD comedown album back in the day, still puts me in a calm mood.

Probably one of the most popular jazz albums of all times. But still a "real" jazz album and not one of so many "pop jazz" albums out there. One of the big ones. No doubt.

Absolute classic album

There's no debate on why this album from Miles Davis is here on this list of albums to listen to before you die. This is one of the most definitive albums of his career, featuring multiple jazz greats in the recording sessions, spanning from John Coltrane, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb. In addition to the pedigree of the personnel, the compositions on this record are phenomenal, allowing space for meaningful instrumental soloing over melodic improvisation across a few musical scales. It never felt too busy or overwhelming from any of the musicians' playing. At the same time, the album kept interesting enough that it never felt like any of these tunes went on for too long, which is impressive, given that most of them were over nine minutes. It can't get much easier to describe than that for a stone-cold classic.

Perfect

Simply one of the greatest albums of all time.

This is a beautiful album. It's a 5. Listen to it three or ten times in a row.

Что тут скажешь, прекрасная музыка.

So What - 5/5 Freddie Freeloader - 4/5 Blue in Green - 5/5 All Blues - 5/5 Flamenco Sketches - 4/5 Average score: 4.6/5 (rounding up) really wish i wasn't one of those people who writes jazz off as background music. i don't mind when it plays, i'm just not as engaged as true fans of the genre that being said, even i can recognize that this is definitely one of the best (if not THEE best) jazz has to offer. and that's gotta be a true statement, since this is probably the most undivided attention i've ever given to a jazz record, period. Davis, Coltrane and Evans on one album? hard to beat that level of artistry

In a sense the album that ruined jazz. In a sense the album that made it. Too many jazzers took the wrong lesson from this album. Don’t try and sound like miles. Do what he did and push things. For thirty years everything seemed to have come out of what miles did. Or was wynton Marsalis pre bop traditionalist. Nonetheless there’s a reason people love this. A tremendous ensemble. Great tracks. It’s a 5 star easily.

Can't argue with that. 5

one of the best jazz albums ever, foundational album, must listen

Nobody does jazz like Miles!

A seminal album in small ensemble Jazz, with an all star cast of players. This record, while not the first of its kind, was so impactful it basically made big band obsolete overnight. I mean, why invest in such a large number of players when you can just have a quartet or quintet (this album has a maximum of six musicians in one track) and make music of this quality? It certainly was more cost effective, especially in a live setting. That is not to bash big band jazz, I love that stuff too, but I understand why the shift had to happen. Another shift happened with this change in approach. With a smaller ensemble, the focus was now on the instrumentalists rather than on the songs, which are usually stretched out to allow room for technical showmanship. And there's plenty of that here. Key tracks: So What Freddie Freeloader Flamenco Sketches

Impeccable. I've listened many times before and did again. It's so perfectly smooth - I think it's impossible to be stressed while this is playing. My dad used it as "the album to introduce you to jazz", and I can't think of a better example.

du miel

Once per year listen, share with anyone who hasn’t heard it. Just when I think they are going abstract the group pulls it back together.

The best to ever do it. Made Jazz that was accessible to the masses

Fucking money! Loved it!

Gorgeous all around

Beautiful.

Perfect

Love this album. Classic top jazz album with some of the best to ever do it together.

Miles Davis + John Coltrane = Timeless American art. Plain and Simple. They own a color.

It’s a classic album, likely in most people’s vinyl collection and a great introduction to several legends - Bill Evan’s and John Coltrane likely the most well known after Miles. Can’t fault it. Flamenco Sketches is my personal favorite.

Hip jazz, ya dig? It’s not discordant and hyper-modern, but it’s not your grandad’s jazz. This cat really liked it

Tell me a better album to listen to on a stormy evening while you’re reading the paper and smoking a pipe at the local diner, wearing a fedora and a trenchcoat, waiting for the weather to clear so you can get home to your wife and 6 kids in 1958. I’ll wait.

Bellissimo super ambient la tromba spacca

#101 - Total classic

fucking amazing no matter how many times I listen. Imagine these guys in the studio doing thing these tunes. Incredible.

vvery beautiful and easy on the ears was nice to close my eyes and listen to it

Really impressed by the saxophonists (John Coltrane and Canonball Adderley). Can see clearly how this influenced a lot of modern jazz, especially within the improvisation genre. It was a short album but really packed a punch. Will likely return to this when I’m looking for something instrumental.

I mean...

Awesome album!

I like jazz

The quintessential modal jazz album. I don't think that there is a wasted moment on this album. Liked Songs Added: So What Freddie Freeloader Blue In Green All Blues

Pinnacle of jazz

Instant five star

Jazz fan listens to jazz for the first time. I like jazz a lot, but am really not familiar with the genre, just don't really know anyone into it. This album blew me away though, sometimes you only need 5 songs if they're all good and well layered.

Very chill, great for a wine bar or low key entertaining

Simply one of the best albums ever made.

One of the best!

Time for some reflection. Going through this project (this is my 536th album) has opened my mind a bit.. I was previously someone who hated jazz. Now I tolerate some of it I think going through the list has taught me there are many ways to appreciate music. Not every album has to have catchy singalongs, or make you want to dance, or headbang along. I have previously rated albums poorly if I consider them better as background music, but I suppose that's missing the point of what makes something like this good Anyway navel-gazing aside, this is incredibly pleasant and atmospheric. As I write I'm on Blue In Green, a track with such a mournful and sombre tone, it makes you realise how much emotion can be conveyed without words. I'm not musically literate enough to comment on the modal jazz innovation or improvisation of it, but I like it

I've played this album hundreds of times. Favorite track: Blue in Green or Flamenco Sketches. Favorite Miles solo: So What. Favorite Coltrane solo: Freddie Freeloader. Favorite Cannonball solo: Freddie Freeloader. Favorite Evans solo: Blue in Green.

Fantastic album

I'm one of those people that claims to like jazz, but when you ask what kind of jazz I like, I just mention this album and strain hard to think of anything else. In that sense, this album is perfect for me and a clear 5-star accomplishment.

Very nice

Three Davis albums so far, and all have been wildly different. Kind of Blue is so tempered and mellow compared to Birth of Cools rapid bebop and it's obviously different from Bitches Brew. So What is such a compelling opening track of easy listening cool jazz. All of the members stand out here, with my favorites being Davis and Coltrane. This is easy to listen to in the background while working and easy to appreciate when paying attention. Great music.

Miles is so smooth; add in John Coltrane, and it is pure magic. The nine tracks flow together in perfect harmony. The only downside is that sometimes the trumpet can be so piercing that it takes me out of the beautiful flow of the music. I have listened to this album many times before and will listen to it many times again. 9.2/10 #30/1001

I just started reading Miles' autobiography, so this album was a perfect companion. Also, in music school I transcribed Wyn Kelly's piano solo in Freddy Freeloader and I was pleased to discover I could still sing along with it although I haven't listened to this album in an embarrassingly long time.

Widely considered one of the greatest jazz albums of all time and one of the albums that all new jazz listeners should experience asap. This album is so well put together with all of the instruments seemingly have conversations with each other as the songs move from one to another. I believe this album can be listened to by anyone in any setting. I've easily listened to it >50 times in my life and recommend it to anyone looking to listen to jazz. Easy 5/5.

It deserves all the acclaim it has received over the decades. Sounds fresh and listenable today even though it was considered a remarkable departure from the jazz that came before it. Highly structured and yet open to interpretation and improvisation by these world class musicians.

Excellent!!!

Really lovely, never gets old, always right for whatever the situation.

Awesome album

I want this album to soundtrack my life.

This is a legendary album, and is a pretty chill listen. Not my favorite Jazz record, but it's undeniably pretty great.

beautiful, no notes

I don’t know a lot about jazz. I’ve been trying to get into it more over the last couple of years. This was one of the first albums I listen to. And it’s still my favorite jazz album.

The sounds of a misty New York at dawn, when the city seems empty. Normally I prefer peppier jazz, but this is iconic.

Miles apparently wrote these arrangements hours before they were recorded. Most of this perfect album is improvisation at its peak.

You definitely don’t need to be a jazz fan to appreciate this. One of the best jazz albums I’ve ever heard and the definition of a classic - smooth, engaging, and transports you to absolute peace

Easy 5. Propulsive and smooth. Greatest soundtrack to an evening ever made.

6 out of 5! Perfect album

Like many other reviewers a part that I loved was that it was enjoyable if you had it on in the background or if you were listening intently to all of the subtle variations. This feels like one of the more accessible jazz albums I've gotten. I wish I could see the full picture of how jazz evolved and how this fits into it to get the most out of this album. One day I'll do a jazz deep dive and have a feeling I'll start with Miles Davis Rating: 4.6

Love it. The definition of Blues.

-wow… this was a defining album of my childhood, my dad would always play it during dinner. one of the most nostalgic connections ive ever had to an album tbh -absolutely lives up to its hype as THE jazz album. just perfect from beginning to end, so haunting and beautiful. Miles Davis really did everything -Favorites are So What, Blue in Green, and Flamenco Sketches

4.9 4x old classic

existe o bom, o ótimo e miles davis - kind of blue extremamente foda, num tem base

Just so beautiful throughout. Easy to listen to and relax.

Absolute masterpiece. I have this on vinyl.

All time classic

One of the best albums ever for a reason

Masterpiece.

Ben absoluut niet de juiste persoon om hier van alles over te zeggen, maar wat is dit goed zeg. Iedere noot voelt gecalculeerd maar zo natuurlijk

I love how all of the instruments feel like individuals talking to each other, each one saying something unique yet still talking about the same stuff. This is what I want when I want jazz.

One of my favorites!

I don’t know enough jazz history to know why this is so highly regarded. I very much enjoy this album, it’s a great album for a rainy day. I just wish I knew more about the context as to why this is one of the best of all time. Again, it sounds good, but in 2025 it sounds like a lot of other jazz albums I’ve heard. Was this style of jazz unheard of at the time? Was this an evolution in sound? That’s what I’d like to find out. For now I will contend with the fact that I don’t know but I still think this is great.

What is there to say about this album that hasn’t already been said? I’m not hating on that, it deserves all its accolades. It’s not often that a piece of art is so accessible but nearly avant garde at the same time. Anyone who wants to be exposed to modal jazz on an innovative front but isn’t a traditional jazz fan I can’t think of a better entry to the genre. It’s sublime; Blue & Green has actually made me cry. A classic.

A wonderful creation that can be listened to on repeat. This is the album to start your journey in jazz music with.

Maybe the best jazz album of all time.

Quintessential. Everyone showed up ready to play and make history, impeccable album.

Very nice

The best of the best. The coolest of the cool. Pack it up and send it into space to let the rest of the universe know what we are capable of.

Perfection.

Outstanding. This has been in my collection for decades and it still keeps giving

This albums is the archetype of jazz in my head

This is #day226 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... this might just be the ultimate jazz album. Looking back, I kind of regret rating the first Miles Davis album I reviewed some weeks ago too highly. I think I rated it high because, well, it's Miles Davis, and I was kind of supposed to do it. Now, I feel I would've given Birth of the Cool a 3, maybe? There’s this uneasy feeling I’m starting to get as jazz records begin to pop up in my summary. Anyway, as for Kind of Blue, I really like it. I can’t fully explain why—I'm not versed enough in jazz theory or whatever—but there’s just something about this record. The music kind of feels like a conversation between the musicians and it's interesting to listen to it. Plus, it’s always a special experience to be listening to this on vinyl. Should I rate this a 5? Well, since I like it more than Birth of the Cool... But also because it's such a seminal album... Or, so they say. Looking forward to #day227.

It does not get better than this.

Inventar un lenguaje be like

lo voy a volver a escuchar pero lo punteo porque ya sé lo que es

The first Miles album I got on 1001 list was more big band driven vibe where this is moving into the small combo group that I favor and this one was killer even though it was a little more mellow than other albums. Love Coltrane’s sax on this!

I will not accept that there is a potentially number of eternal stars imaginable for me to properly rate this album.

fantastico

lost my grandma today, so I needed to lay down for some time and listen to music. this album made it slightly easier. thank u mister Davis. love u grandma.

Very cool jazzy vibes

On weekly rotation Jazz for the nation Sunday morning Adoration fawning Best of the best leaving the rest in the dust gathering musical rust

Phenomenal

Could listen to this album again & again.

As good as jazz gets. At least in terms of my limited knowledge of the genre.

Top 20 all time

Excepcional

A masterpiece - yet only my 3rd favorite of Miles.....

I love this album. Give me a rainy day, a cozy chair and some coffee, throw this album on, and I'm in heaven.

3/3/25. Might be my favorite jazz album, Miles was the best. Amazing instrumentation and arrangements.

Miles should stop being so modest. This is very blue.

Well. This guy is on of the best to ever do it, and I recognise that.

So great

Some of the best music made by human beings. It's got a magic quality that keeps it eternally fresh. Each time I listen to Kind of Blue it takes me somewhere calm and melancholic. I'm not a jazz musician, I have no idea what the instruments are 'doing' in relation to each other, but Flamenco Sketches is heavenly.

A classic, my beef is with the sound balance where sax/trumpet would come through only one ear, which is very jarring. Still 5*

Awesome album. Great jazz. Perfect for background music while working, or as the soundtrack for a romantic evening.

a m a z i n g If you're not into jazz, this is a phenomenal start. If you are into jazz, you should only be reading this review because you already know it's amazing and you're just making sure I didn't say something stupid.

I don't know how you can improve on perfection. Just a glorious jazz experience. Miles, Trane, Adderley in one room!

One of the best of all time. I once got the cops at my door in Fishtown because I was blasting it drunk at midnight and forgot my patio speakers were on.

I'm not the biggest fan of jazz. Even then I really enjoyed this album. A 9.

genre defining album

Perhaps the literal best

Ongekend iconisch

its about time i gave this a listen this like the avengers of jazz getting together. I had no clue john coltrane was on this. Excellent line up of players and an excellent jazz, i see why this is such a highly acclaimed album

Not my favorite Miles period, let alone album; and it's an unmitigated 5/5. It'd be 10/10 or 100/100. Revolutionary and so accessible. Oh, and it was the second time he reinvented jazz. And he'd do it at least twice more. That's why he's on my Rushmore with Duke, Ray, and Q.

Pretty much a perfect jazz record. If I could only recommend 1 jazz album to someone, it’d almost definitely be Kind of Blue. World- class band, compositions, improvisations, and playing. It’s also very easy to listen to. Each instrument has its own feeling to show and pieces of story to tell, and they dance with each other throughout the album to paint the full picture clearly. Once the bass + piano come in on So What, you’re reeled right in and never let go.

Love me blues

One of the best jazz albums of all time

No honestly just stop with the ridiculously token jazz albums. The entire history of jazz reduced to KOB, Time Out and and a handful of others that the late-sixties LP collector would have alongside the Beatles and the Stones. Having said that five stars.

Timeless

Perfection. I wish it were three times longer.

I don't think there's anything I could say about this album that hasn't already been said before

Perfect jazz album. I listen to it a lot when im studying or just need some background noise another album i need on vinyl

The quintessential jazz album for beginners

Classic. Unmatched in its virtuosity and purity.

He sure knew what he was doing. 😎 Fave track - it's not really about individual tracks with this one, but let's say "Blue in Green" - that's a proper nursing-a-glass-of-bourbon-wreathed-in-smoke-scratching-at-a-five-o'clock-shadow-staring-at-the-murder-board-looking-for-something-you've-missed type of song if ever I heard one! 🕵️‍♀️

I'm biased, because as a jazz bassist this is one of my favorite albums of all time, and So What is one of my favorite tracks. of all time. I've transcribed Miles's trumpet solo on that and often tried to emulate Paul Chambers in my own playing.

I rarely listen to Jazz music but this album is amazing.

Kind of Blue was the first jazz album I ever heard—like so many others—and it completely changed how I listened to music. From the first notes of “So What,” there’s a calm, cool confidence that pulls you in. Miles Davis, along with legends like John Coltrane, Bill Evans, and Cannonball Adderley, created something timeless in 1959 that still sounds fresh and alive today. The album’s beauty lies in its simplicity and space. It introduced me to modal jazz without me even knowing what that meant—it just felt good. Each track flows effortlessly, yet there’s a depth and subtlety that invites you to come back and hear something new each time. Kind of Blue isn’t just a jazz record; it’s a gateway. It opened the door for me and countless others to explore the genre, and I can’t think of a better place to start. It’s a masterclass in mood, tone, and restraint—one of the most essential albums ever made in any genre.

Needs more electric guitar solos with lots of distortion (Hahaha just kidding I actually really liked it) Edit on Jan 20 2026: changing from a 4 to a 5. I really like this one now, and have been regularly spinning it

i love jazz

Perfect kitchen music. You could have this on in the background of anything and it would flow, or just listen to it alone & get totally lost for 45 minutes.

Extremely my shit

Jazz classic, what else is there to say

liked it, wrote a paper review to it, remembered that I actually used a snippet of Freddie Freeloader to score one of my plays in college

9.5/10. This is an incredibly exquisite album. It feeds the soul with smooth jazz. I'd listen to this album while drinking a freshly-brewed cup of warm coffee. If this is what blue is, I'd take it in various different shades. :)

Fantastic

Banger. So elite, loved it

Day 24: Kind of Blue - Miles Davis. Miles Davis Album 1/4. Kind of Blue is one of the most pleasant and exquisite albums of all time. Miles Davis was a virtuoso on the trumpet. It works as background music that makes one feel much more alive, and music that makes you stop and listen. It's not necessarily for every possible mood, since I don't think that this would fair well for a moshing party. Who knows? Perhaps there have been jazz aficionados who moshed to this album as if it were Slayer. However, I digress. This album features collaborations with six other important figures in the world of jazz music: Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers, James Cobb, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, and on one track, Wynton Kelly. The collective of talented musicians makes the record feel much more alive. The section for albums from the 1950's among "1,001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" is considerably lackluster, but at least it contains this gem of an album. Individuals with all sorts of tastes in music have sung its praises. Even if you don't like jazz, you probably would be able to realize that this is a pretty bloody awesome album. Personal Enjoyment: 5/5. How Much It Belongs Here: 5/5.

Goat album. Blue in green makes me cry every time. My only complaint is that it’s only 45 minutes.

Atmospheric and intimate

Doesn't even need an introduction. Probably the most known jazz album ever, and for a good reason.

So What Freddie Freeloader Blue in Green All Blues Flamenco Sketches

Completely and utterly timeless. Musical perfection.

absolutely wonderful jazz album. something like this only gets made once in a lifetime and thank you miles davis for blessing us with this utter gift.

Creative, free, improvised Jazz by absolute greats. Considered greatest Jazz album of all time. Perfect twinkly jazz. Trumpet lead. I prefer a little more structure but this is very chill. Great for work. Absolutely stunning.

Ikoniskt!

Fantastiskt bra album!

Beautiful and haunting. Maybe one of the most influential jazz albums of all time with some absolute monsters playing on it. I’m not super well versed in jazz, but am a classically trained musician and it can’t be understated how many guys point to this album as an influence. I can think of few things more enjoyable than sitting in a dark room with a glass of brandy and playing this album, LOUD.

It's Miles Davis. I mean... cmon.

Listened to the Legacy Edition which sounded better to me with less background static. It took a while to find the kind of jazz I like but this is it. Definitely not the fusion jazz-rock of his later career, but there's still an ambient quality to it that appeals. It just oozes atmosphere in a wistful kind of way. I've listened to this a handful of times already and I feel like I could play it for years to come. Even so, it's approachable and pleasant to the untrained ear. Favorite pieces: probably the delicate Blue in Green and follow up track All Blues, but that might change. At the risk of letting this album's big reputation influence me, I'm happy giving this top marks.

This is an incredible album and belongs on the list. The quality of playing is one thing but the improvisation and way it all blends is stunning. People can say they hate jazz and rank this poorly if they want but there's no question it's a masterpiece.

The trumpet just cuts through you. Into your brain. Into your soul. Into your gut. Great album.

Likes it. Listened to it five times. Did some cooking also.

5/5 Kind Of Blue begins brilliantly with the beautiful, low-key, melodic So What, but of course these adjectives apply to the rest of the album as well. The solos are pretty strong on the track, particularly John Coltrane's, but the main theme stands above. Freddie Freeloader is a bit more upbeat, and the way the piano, bass and drums fuse and intertwine gives such a pleasurable sound. Miles Davis's solo shines strongest here. The first side concludes with Blue in Green, perhaps the most melancholic song. The trumpet cries out so sadly and powerfully, and the piano is played with such skill and emotion by Bill Evans. The beginning of the second side has a bit of energy injected with All Blues. A simple, danceable tune which once again is dominated by the incomparable Davis, and then the saxophones work their own magic. Flamenco Sketches firmly brings us back to the blue world. Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley lead the way here with amazing working around the scales, which move so satisfyingly. It is perhaps fitting that Davis himself closes the album with an understated, wistful solo. I would say this is the best jazz I have heard up t this point. The modal improvisational format works wonders. Love this album. So What 4.5/5 (LEAST FAV) Freddie Freeloader 5/5 Blue in Green 5/5 (FAV) All Blues 5/5 Flamenco Sketches 5/5

Great jazz to work to

uff gran disco, cambios flujo ritmo escencia todooo

Listened to this a day late, Oops. I love a good instrumental jazz.

Best Jazz album EVEr! In my top five albums ever!

Amazing how it is still so damn good 65+ years after it released.

Very chill, but the quality of musicianship really stands out even to someone who doesn't know much about jazz

listened to again i've decided this is a perfect album

Really good

Excellent album that I actually own.

I don’t know much about jazz but I know this is a vibe.

Trite to say it but if you listen to one jazz album listen to this one. It's the album that changed the genre, that influenced a hundred others. Lie back and just fall into it.

There's a reason that this is rated as the greatest jazz album of all time, and could even be mentioned in a short list of greatest albums of all time. Maybe the greatest "Supergroup" ever. If you love music, any music, you should add this to your list of albums to listen to.

An absolute classic, and as other reviewers have stated, one of the most versatile albums ever made - perfect for any occasion, whether it be easy listening, study/work focus, musical inspiration, or background music for a party. Really makes you feel all of the things, 5/5

All time jazz album, good for background music.

Defining. Legendary. Important. This. Is. Jazz.

Nice. Cool. Lovely.

So great. You can just sit and listen and really soak in it, or let it play in the background and be super productive.

I love jazz

Look. I'm not going to pretend that I'm some sort of jazz expert. I don't exactly know what makes a jazz album great or not. All I know is that Kind of Blue is one of the finest albums I've ever heard. I already loved my first Miles Davis album with In A Silent Way, so my expectations for Kind of Blue were very high. Needless to say, they were met. This album is just wonderful. The pacing is perfect. None of the songs go on for too long, nor do they end too soon. That's what you want to see. Of course, the big thing to focus on with any instrumental album is the musical compositions, which are excellent in this album. It's simple enough to work as pleasant background music, but more than complex enough for you to sit down and really digest what you're listening to. The vibes are immaculate. The talent behind this album is just incredible. Obviously, Miles Davis himself is incredibly talented, but the presence of people like John Coltrane and Bill Evans just adds to the talent to create an all-star lineup of jazz legends. This album is simply magnificent. It is, dare I say, the perfect jazz album. 5/5.

A friend of mine once told me: "Man, you have to listen to this album! It's the most revolutionary jazz album ever!" I had already started doing the 1001albumsgenerator challenge when he told me this, so I replied: "relax, at some point the site will send me this album to listen to." And here we are, 250+ days later I'm listening to Kind Of Blue and now I want to beat my friend up for not insisting that I listen to this album sooner! There are no flaws in this album, that's all. It is truly a masterpiece of jazz, as everyone says. I'm going to give it 5 stars today without even thinking about it!

One of the top jazz albums of all time 5/5

Perfect

The starting point for any new jazz enthusiast.
