Reviews (page 12 of 12)

Hard to listen too.

Kind of dull and flat for my taste

E pro- Catchy riff, not sure if the lyrics were good as they kinda get drowned out 👍 Qué Onda Guero- comical observations, its fine, production feels a bit overdone at points Girl- pov ur a serial killer missing - fairly monotonous Black Tambourine- 👍 Earthquake weather- wish the vocals were a bit more emotive but i did like this track 👍 Hell Yes- we really have gone to just listing as our lyrics, I just find this quite annoying Broken Drum- I love heavy instrumentation matching the vocal line 👍 Scarecrow- seems like filler Go It Alone Farewell Ride - And yet this album keeps on going! (I do like this tho)👍 Other songsare more of the same 2/5

Lot of potential in the talent that seems wasted. The beats are largely dry and repetitive, and there's little to no inflection or energy in the singing

He has a definitive sound, which is good if you like it, but Loser is enough Beck for me

2/5 too calm

I cannot find something to hook on with Beck. I often get recommendations but I cannot relate.

Unremarkable

Not my style

2.75 stars

How did this mundane piece of work get selected?

Trash - first song is ok, quite like a kasabian song. 'Hell Yes' is what made me turn off, load of shite. the rest of the songs before this were just bland. your mans voice has no interesting quality to it. started listening to the second half, 'Broken Drum' is the only song id listen to for a second time Overall they are decently written songs with an uninteresting singer. Critics of the album seem to commend its uniqueness/weirdness. i dont hear that at all

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it? Not really Favourite song: didn’t have one

The man has Talent Oozing out of his Veins. A Mixture of Hip Hop, Funk, Soul, Blues & funk. Each song will have you Dancing and singing. A Great Album

Ok but not my thing

The first song was good but went down hill from there, really quite boring when kinda get into what they're going for. Listened to it through

It’s fine, I guess. My exposure to Beck is minimal. I know Loser, I listened to Debra a couple of times after Baby Driver came out. The biggest thing I know him from is the episode of Futurama he appeared in, which brings the number of Futurama references I’ve made in these reviews up to two. Much like the Dexy’s Midnight Runners album, a lot of the songs blend together to a worrying degree. It’s not an unpleasant blend, I really enjoyed Girl and Broken Drum, but a few times I was listening, zoned out for a second and came back to a something that I thought was just a different movement of one song, only to find it was a completely separate one when I looked up the track listing. I really dunno, I’m really not feeling this, as evidenced by the fact that I’m reviewing this two days late. I suspect Beck is the US equivalent of all of those middling UK Indie albums that keep popping up on this list. He was part of a movement that made sense in it’s time, but ended up not being the predominant trend in it’s genre and so leaves modern listeners a little confused as to the level of critical acclaim that it received. I want to like it more than I do, but I just can’t bring myself to care too much about this collection of mostly middling summery Beach Pop.

I did not enjoy this at all. Every song had me thinking "when will this song be over?" and at the end of every song, I was praying it would be the last one. At least it didn't completely offend my ears? But I would not listen again.

I really hoped I would like this more

Reviewing this a day later and I have no memory of listening to this except I know I did not like it

not terrible but wayyy too repetitive

interesting mix of songs

A lot of just wasn’t really my vibe, but there were some good songs (Girl, Go It Alone, Emergency Exit). Hell Yes sucked ass. I don’t really like the rapping parts on this album. I don’t know what else is on this list of albums, but I’ve got a hard time figuring out why this is a classic.

Gayero

The first song is easily the best one. The crunchy guitar riff of E-Pro is unforgettable and gets stuck in your head. Pure eargasm. The remaining songs are OK, nothing exceptional

E-PRO = meh, okay but nothing special, wouldn’t have had it as opening track. Reminds me of another song but idk what. QUE ONDA = reminds me a bit of the salmon dance song by chem bros. Catchy but again just boring vibe. GIRL = ahh I like this one. Happy wee tune, driving with windows down on a sunny Sunday or smth. MISSING = I don’t like the repetitive tune and beats etc. nothing is sticking out for me and neither is this. Voice reminds me of pearl jam a bit in this also. BLACK TAMBOURINE = sounds like he’s about to sleep while singing. V boring. Least there’s a tambourine in it. EARTHQUAKE WEATHER = My fave so far, most lively but still chill lmao. Whimsical ending. HELL YES = Rappy and female voice reminds me of a BMTH song. BROKEN DREAM = ohhh I like this one. Quite sad. Again pearl jam esque. Love the instrumental parts. Makes me feel like I’m walking in a daze out of it. SCARECROW = wee bit funky. Repetitive lyrics. GO IT ALONE = nah nah nah nah. FAREWELL RIDE = breaking bad theme tune who? Very cowboy western. Would be a good show song. RENTAL CAR = shame it’s getting better as the album draws to an end. EMERGENCY EXIT = I wish he used his lovely voice for better music. SEND A MESSAGE TO HER = should’ve been on album. CHAIN REACTION = like this one, good ending. Overall, rather boring, one or two good songs I would listen to again but most of it is just lost in the abyss. Rather forgettable. Probably would not listen again.

oof. i mean, i see where he's going, but it's absolutely not my way.

I think I don’t like beck lol

The album isn't even that bad, just very cringe. Every song uses some combination of jingle bells, claps, and that rusty-sounding guitar. It's too Californian.

Eh the singles are ok but overall not great

A decent listen. Low tier as far as beck albums goes for me

Started off strong but got kinda weird for me as it progressed.

I appreciate Beck has an artistic vision. It's just not one that does anything for me. Also, he should not rap. Ever.

Nice concept, not really for me. The music throws me off a bit, doesn't feel cohesive. But interesting

2/5. It's not a bad album honestly, some bops, it's just not my type of music. A personal rating for this one. He just sounds bored which in turn makes me bored even though the songs are good.

I feel as if, were procedurally generated music to ever take hold, it would sound an awful lot like Guero by Beck. For a start, it's repetitive. I say this very neutrally, as repetition can go either way, but there's not a huge amount going on rhythmically. The formula seems to go - establish a groove, swathe it in Beck's weirdly soporific vocals and throw in the odd 'interesting' sound like a wonky guitar or a whimsical, eccentric harmonica, rinse and repeat. All this is done altogether competently and the overall effect is just very, very dull. However, the main reason I see this as a prime candidate for machine-generated music is a real lack of heart. Where's the emotional centre to all thus? Bloodless, glassy-eyed music that spoofs the true genius of creative endeavour. Those slide guitar breaks sure sound pretty though!

Man, this record sounds pretty darn good overall when played loudly in a car. Not as good as “Sea Change,” but pretty darn good. Too bad the songs are no bueno. Nothing ever seems to build to anything on any given song. It’s a collection of sounds that are never really given any direction to go other than to just be played and repeated. It also really dawned on me while listening to this just how much success Beck has had in spite (because?) of a very less than impressive singing voice. That’s nothing new, but dude has multiple Grammys and is still going strong-ish 30 years after his breakout. I’m trying to think of who else from the 90’s falls into that category and I’m drawing a blank. Must be the Scientology bump.

Meh borde inte vara på listan

It was ok, wouldn’t listen to it again.

Can't find Beck interesting

Some nice slide guitar in some songs but its not a focus, lyrics not worth worrying about, kinda meh not sure what the hype is about

First listen Saved 5/13 Top track: E-Pro

Ikkje nåken stor beckhamfan heller

Not for me

A little uneven for me. Good then bad

Not sure if we need more than one Beck album on here, especially when every song sounds like it's about to become "Devil's Haircut."

Third Beck album I got on the 1001 list, and I still don't get it...

Vaguely aggressive and aggressively white.

Don't like his style of rapping/singing and I find his music in this album grates on me, apart from Broken Drum. I like some Beck stuff but this album isn't for me.

Nothing bad, but very forgettable.

A bit experimental for my taste

Not a big fan.

Just not me

Wherein Beck tries his hand at appropriating more than a few different cultures with mixed results. Several songs have a certain catchiness about them, but the end product feels to scattershot and see-what-sticks to feel whole. Can’t decide whether it wants to be radio-friendly or experimentally artistic and lands firmly in the middle at Beck’s usual smarminess

nothing really stuck out I can kinda see how alt rock bands would get inspired by this 2.5

Beck is an artist that reminds me of Coldplay in that I can’t put my finger on it, but I really don’t love it. Summer Girl is a good tune and the rest I didn’t enjoy vocally and the instrumentals are extremely repetitive.

A couple catchy tunes including E-Pro to kick things off, but this thing nosedives worse than the Winnipeg Jets season. From Black Tambourine on, just a very forgettable stretch. Highlight - E-Pro Lowlight - Hell Yes

Han är överskattad.

udmærket, moderne rock, eksperimenterende

Wasn’t very good, I was bored

E-Pro - 3/10 I cant lie this aint fo me

not my vibe at all

I find everything he does incredibly boring

Listened to this along with Neil Young's After the Gold Rush. Interesting. NY can't sing. Not even close. But he can write songs. Beck can sing. A bit. But....

Extremely boring and repetitive. Doesn't go anywhere. He really loves a two chord repetitive structure. Was excited to hear the beginnings of some bossa nova on Missing, but then it was quickly very obvious that it was just two boring chords throughout. 1/5

This project has helped me conclude that I hate Beck and any music trying this hard to sound cool. Guerro is trying to replay the Odelay success with Dust Brothers production, which leads to it sounded even more derivative, detached and easily dismissable. One of those that I had to resort to playing in the background at work as it would have made the car journey too boring and painful.

Very boring. Kept checking to see when each song was going to be over.

A réécouter, lent et change de style

Don’t like it

Menudo zurullo!

Underneath this mess , is something kind of mediocre.

Horrible.

Like a lot of others it seems, I’m now sick and tired of Beck regularly popping up on this list like a bad smell. He’s a trier but doesn’t really deserve all the exposure he gets as this album adequately illustrates. 1/5 18/1/26

gonna be honest, i only listened to the first three songs in full. i just don't fuck with beck like this. skimmed the rest of the album, it's just not for me

scuffed

På angiven sida hittar vi istället The Good the bad and the Queen.

being super subjective here but i really couldn't stand this, every song was giving me a visceral feeling of wanting to just turn it off lol

Please make him stop.

i'm mad at how plain this alcum was. i didn't need to hear this before i die

this originally had something meaner but I felt bad about it. this feels like it should be for me but it super isn't. the only beck I recognize is the mongolian chop squad not adding to collection

can't get into this at all- beck not for me. sounds like all the worst parts of millennial pop and indie from 2003-2015

Didn’t finish it. I liked the fist song.

Not my favorite. Not a Beck fan but I gave it a try.

Kann nicht hören ist nicht verfügbar

It’s so fucking funny that it gave me Beck again. Que Ónda Guero not bad. I don’t get Beck. Sorry. The rest of this was worse than the last one. Boring ass bullshit, cowboy spurs clanking over droning sludge. Sorry.

Didn't like it, found it boring and monotonous.

see that little guy on the album with his hand over his face? yeah that's me listening to this album

? If you are going to give me Beck, put Jeff in front of it. Otherwise, no thanks.

Really not a fan of this production style Nothing inherently bad about it I just can’t get into it

boring

Very average.

People actually listen to music like this??

This is the first album on the list that I absolutely do not understand why it is here. There is little original about the music itself, they either sound like someone just got a drum machine and hit the pre-recorded beats or they are samples. Have sings with almost no inflection of emotion, which make the songs sound meaningless, even when some of the lyrics are poignan.

For a list of the greatest albums ever this isn’t very great

idk nothing much

Most of this album sounded like street noise.

Mumble-y. Maybe I'm just not an alt-rock fan? Didn't really like a single track. What justifies this as something I need to listen to before I die??

Rap again! Horribly. Though I do appreciate the Hispanic backing. 1/5

What a dull album! So 2000’s (the bad stuffs!). I feel I wasted my time…

Ugh, Beck. This album seemed more interesting than the others. Maybe interesting is not the word. In any case, it was less depressing, a bit faster. Some songs reminded me of Nickleback and I can’t stand them either.

Eto cho

E-Pro Girl

Fuck Beck.

first song sounds like a ford f150 commercial... that's the only thing i've gleaned from it in its 3:22 runtime. i like that the concept of this album came from beck getting bullied for being white. beck has like two types of songs from what i know about him: "where it's at" style rap rock and generic garage rock (i haven't listened to sea change though so i'm definitely limited in my perspective). okay this third song is just car seat headrest. people compare this record to gorillaz and they're right, thus far it's literally just been the first gorillaz record but worse. i don't think i've heard a song on this album i've actually enjoyed yet (as of "black tambourine"). okay "hell yes" is pretty enjoyable, but it made me realize that the enjoyability of a beck song essentially reliant on being quirky enough to get your attention. which is fine or whatever, but this album seems like a rehash of odelay and mellow gold, so i feel like all of the quirk has been squeezed from this trip-hop, sampledelia gimmick already. as of "go it alone," this album has officially become incredibly boring. also fuck jack white. i just genuinely wonder how someone is supposed to *want* to sit here and listen to this entire album when every fucking song is just a four on the floor dirge with a monotone vocals that sound about as bored with the song as i am. "rental car" is the second song on this entire album that didn't waste any of my time with pure distilled boredom in music form. because things happen in this song. things are happening and it's not just the same 30 seconds looped over and over again. this is how you make music, mr. beck. last song was such a huge waste of time i don't even want to type its name.

Bland and boring rock

felt like unseasoned music, will never listen again lol.... standard mid 2000s music

:( <- me listening to this album

wow, that's some real shit again. an attempt to make music sound 'modern' and synthetic and that's exactly what the crap sounds like. why would you want to produce something like that, why would you listen to something like that, it just sounds like shit. can I say shit again? oh, I'll just say shit as often as I want. a few drum beats, a high and 1-2-3 shit, 1-2-3 shit, shit, shit. 2-3 shit, ... OK, now it's no longer fun

Never been a fan. Doesn't do anything for me. Sweet relief when my browser locked up half way through. Couldn't finish.

I don't like the instrumentation and it's too much rap for me. Not my style

Just boring as fuck

A funky group of skeletons dressed in purple busting it down sexual style are they goated with the sauce? This album made my thoughts go away (in a bad way) I don't want to listen to this again.

This just kept getting worse and worse - the album was just all over the place and there wasn’t enough talent to back up the range of style.

Heavy drum beat. Fits well within radio of the early aughts.

The guy facepalming on the left side of the cover is me when I saw this pop up. I warned you not to give me any more Beck, 1001 albums, I fucking warned you didn't I? Alternative album time. Go listen to Rossz csillag alatt született by Venetian Snares from the same year. A timeless masterpiece of drill and bass and breakcore. I award this album 1 knife to throats of the editors of this book, just try to give me one more Beck album, just fucking try it! 🔪

I'm very surprised this landed on a list of influential albums. The production is way too sparse to be of any influence in any genre, and the accompanying vocal melodies far too basic to make this album any good. Finishing it was a pain.

Too loud

Way too much beck on this list 1

Not a fan... Only Beck song I like is Loser

Not a fan

Não é pra mim

this is what happens in the mind of your uncle's single buddy who comes to family events bc he's got nowhere else to go but also he brings weed. i stand by go it alone but the rest is not for me. 1.5

Lol I hate Beck

Why is this considered a good album? This is shit. Knockoff Simon and Garfunkel.

He's called Beck cause when you see one of his records you back away from it.

I DONT LIKE BECK

Chilling&wibing shit....

Beck is another one of those "How do you not like Beck? He's the next big thing! He's the future!" God, I hope not. If he's the future, I want no part of it. Oh wait, he did this in 2005? Okay. Nobody's talking about this now. Never mind. I can continue not caring in the slightest. Indifferent to Beck since the 90s!

i didnt listen to the full album because i didn’t enjoy it from the beginning
