I can't stand this. I'm getting a headache listening to this dude scream.

Laughably bad. So generic, unoriginal and talentless. How did they think in 2008 they could churn this out? It's been done before by better bands. Maybe the braindead teens in their bedrooms don't realise that and think it's novel and cutting edge? Reading the reviews after writing the above I'm relieved that it's not just me.

Wanted to give this a chance, since I remember how much some of my friends loved this band in middle school. So I gave it a chance.

All hope is gone that I take this list seriously now. A personal memory: I saw Slipknot headlining one night of the Furyfest / Hellfest metal festival in France back in the naughts, and it was one night to remember. The festival audience had learned that the band had turned up late for the soundcheck in the early afternoon, and that they had used most of the soundcheck slots of the other smaller bands playing that day to rehearse their show. Which prevented those other bands to do the same, obviously. Apart from Slipknot's young and naive fans, the slightly more mature general audience of that festival was not pleased by that rumour, as you can imagine. And so Slipknot got the welcome they supposedly deserved when they started to play. Angry metalheads and hardcore punk kids put their hands on everything they could find at the festival locale--stones, cans, even bottles of piss!--and threw them on the stage while Slipknot was playing. An acquaintance working at the festival later told us that among the rubbish littering the stage right after the band left it, someone even found a f*cking dead rabbit. A dead rabbit! Pretty fitting for the band's aesthetics, I'd say. I gotta give it to Slipknot, though, they still gave a great show, objectively speaking. Even with their masks on, you could sense the band didn't care about the dangerous situation, and they even took advantage of it, adding their own craziness to the whole disaster. Whenever he could, their frontman kept giving middle fingers to the pissed-off festival members, clearly enjoying the whole thing while avoiding the projectiles as he played--therefore proving Slipknot were solid performers through and through, even under those pretty adverse circumstances. This can't make up for the rock-star bullshit, but that justifies the admiration of some other fans, I guess... To return to *All Hope Is Gone*, it's more satisfying for me to share that little anecdote than to describe this album painstakingly trying to renew Slipknot's sound almost a decade after that nu-metal thing took over the world (and then faded into oblivion). The band tries to play as many different cards as they can to move their sound further--classic trash metal / death metal on "Gematria" ; System Of A Down-related dynamics on "Sulfur" ; cheesy pop choruses on "Psychosocial" ; a metal version of Depeche Mode for "Dead Memories" (via Mike Shinoda/Linkin' Park, maybe?) ; or a classic metal ballad à la "Nothing Else Matters" with "Snuff" ; not to mention the band's already aging nu-metal routine for most of the other cuts... But literally everything falls flat, because there's nothing that Slipknot offers here that hasn't been done better ten times before. Including by them sometimes, very ironically. Those musicians are very skilled players and performers, of course. But that's not enough to consider *All Hope Is Gone* as "essential". If anything, this album looks a little like that stage I talked about earlier, at least once the show was over. It's a topsy-turvy arrangement of rubbish that neither makes sense nor suggests a truly visceral experience. Because everything important was said and done *before* that moment. A *dead* rabbit for sure. :) To put it in a nutshell, maybe it would make more sense to include Slipknot's 1999 eponymous album in the list, thanks to its more iconic tracks on the first side ("sic", "Eyeless", "Wait And Bleed"...). That choice would at least be more preferable than this later overdone and rather laborious LP. As some reviewers rightly said here (including initial fans of the band), the 1001 Albums book's strange "compromise" that saw its authors select this later full-length release won't satisfy a lot of people anyway, whether they are sincere fans of the band or not. And the global score is here to prove it. 1/5 for the purposes of this list, which translates to a 6/10 grade for more general purposes (5 + 1). Next, please. This album boils down to something like "Life is meaningless, I'm going to scream!" When I am feeling existential dread I at least like to listen to music that sounds pleasant. 2/10

About 25 years ago there appeared a whole generation of "nu metal" bands.. which were all terrible (apart from SoaD they were great) If you still care, don't ever let me knooooww.. this kind of singer-songwriter stuff is a bit too whiny for me.

I went through a metal phase in high school. At the peak of nu-metal, I was donning JNCO jeans, bead bracelets, dyed hair, and a bass guitar. Slipknot became relevant during this time and, of course, I loved them. I have a core memory of tailgating during a high school football game, blaring the self-titled album out of my car as some jocks and preps kept yelling at me to turn it down. I still cringe when remembering that today. When I got assigned this album, I wondered: will Slipknot stand the test of time? I doubted it, but here we are to find out. The answer, it turns out, is that I'm not sure. This is Slipknot's 4th album, and it was released almost a decade after I was listening to them in my teens. While some of the classic Slipknot, noise metal sound was there (especially in the drums), this album ultimately fell flat for me . Even though I don't listen to much that's very heavy these days, I was disappointed in this one almost because it wasn't metal enough. The slower songs were just lame, and the heavy songs didn't pack enough of a punch. I dunno, I'm sure if I went back to the self-titled from 1999, I wouldn't love it, but I'm sure at least I'd understand why I thought it was great at the time.

Not the grooviest attempt at groove metal, but what really puts me off here is the vocals and the inane, clichéd lyrics. Disappointing.

Not as unpleasant as I had expected - this seems like an attempt to move a bit closer to the mainstream, after the first couple of tracks most of the lyrics are sung rather than screamed. That said, it still isn't very good - it's loud but a bit dull. Not sure why it's made this list to be honest, I get that people like Slipknot but surely you should include an album of Slipknot doing Slipknot things rather than a pretty lacklustre attempt to go more poppy? 1/5, might've got 2 had it not been so bloody long.

I made it to the start of Sulphur and bailed. I sort of admire the full-on assault of this, and it reminds me of my youthful Peel listening featuring Napalm Death, but it’s not for me. One song was fine, but then it was just relentless and monotonous.

Got bored reading the Wikipedia entry, let alone listening to this shit.

If I was in a situation where I was trying to psych myself up for a physical fight, or commit murder, this is the sort of music I'd choose to play. But otherwise, it's just a horrible, nasty noise and by track two I'd had enough already. Cool cover artwork mind you.

OK, I listened to the whole thing, and I have tried. But this album is just hot fucking garbage. It’s a bunch of terrible mid 2000s Pop hard rock bullshit.. But really it just sounds like every other crappy rock band that I only heard when I got to the movies early and had to listen to the stupid commercials and rock soundtrack that they advertise while you wait. It’s just boring.

There's something sonically about Slipknot that is displeasing to my ear. I'm unsure if it's the repetitive guitar riffs, Corey Taylor screaming, or some combination of the two. It's quite a shame, because I know Corey Taylor is capable of much more, but I just don't find this very listenable.

There are elements here that I appreciate in other metal subgenres, but this is a little too nu metal.

All hope has gone. It's not a euphemism. I'm not sure who is more disappointed, those who want the mental start throughout or those that discover the more laid-back tunes later. Unpleasant either way tbh. Just give me some music.

First song isn’t that good to be honest. Just a weird effect on talking. 2/10 Snuff is the only semi-acceptable song on the album imo, I just don’t like their style.

This is not a good album. The drums are good. Actually, the drums are really good, so good that it stands out as pretty much the only thing on the album I like. Snuff is okay, I guess. The rest can be relegated to a dumpster fire. It's one of those albums that you have to try to figure out what posessed the writer to include on this list.

Thinking of the movie suite Dune and an episode that never seems to end 😘

My first reaction to this when it came up was ugh. I'm an 80's / 90's metal/thrash kid. The early 00's rehashing of punk and metal was not good in my view. BUT, I went into this album intending to give it a fair listen. My opinion still hasn't changed. While technically skilled, the rythm section carries this album with the standard metal fills. The mix between sing/yelling/crooning doesn't play well to me.
